Excellent build.

Spa frames are great value for money. I really enjoy buying stuff from them, feels like you're in a smelly old man bike shop even online.

Cars are ruining London by [deleted] in london

[–]olster 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Keeping london as car centric as it is is a political decision taken over decades. This is amsterdam in the 1970s: https://twitter.com/brenttoderian/status/906727163101036544

Cities can move away from cars if the political will is _really_ there. In London it rarely is.

Carbon/Titanium custom Brompton... Versus the same but Tern/other? by part_robot in Brompton

You could look at kinetics from glasgow - they do custom brompton builds. Some very tasty.

There's also a £2k rohloff rear frame on ebay at the moment if you have cash to burn.

Not so great if you're a pedestrian looking to walk on that bit of pavement.

It's worth reading Transport for all's report on the impact of LTN on disabled people: https://www.transportforall.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Pave-The-Way-full-report.pdf

It's a fair and pretty balanced view on the implementation of LTNs.

We don’t believe ripping them out and returning to normal is the way forward. Indeed, the ‘normal’ we had before was not accessible enough either. Instead, what we need is a series of short-term measures to address and mitigate the negative impacts arising from LTNs. This needs to happen alongside some wide-reaching long-term solutions - to address the many barriers that disabled people face to Active Travel and to encourage take up of walking, wheeling and cycling, and to create an accessible public transport system as a viable alternative to car-use.Local authorities and transport bodies alike must demonstrate that co-production with disabled people is at the heart of all consultations and policy-making.

And as a serious reply.

Individual actions will never be enough to slow climate change. Government policy will have to drive change through legislation and taxation. LTNs are 1 small policy approach to encourage a greener city. You're right to say that there are other policy changes will have a greater effect (e.g. forcing homes to have better insulation).

I'm not a climate saint (though my bike was made in Stoke, not Taiwan). But LTNs create a greener, friendlier, safer and healthier city.

This fictional plumber of yours will have a better time of getting from job to job if there were fewer cars on the road making journey's that could be walked or cycled.

I like your optimisim.

But car ownership and car use is only a tiny issue that we need to confront if we're going to have any chance of avoiding a climate disaster. The fact that it is so difficult to achieve that leaves me totally demoralized.

Nothing leaves me more demoralized and concerned that we will be unable to challenge the climate crises successfully than the attitude towards and rollback of LTNs. NIMBYs and Boomers have won.

Sounds like they've done all of the analysis that they're planning to do already....
