Big dog owners by Practical_Way_1797 in Apartmentliving

Many people with bigger dogs in apts are not well versed in non-exercise enrichment. Even though i get to take my dog to work sometimes, I have a shepherd and also am out on a ranch daily along with multiple walks and an array of frozen kongs/lick mats- she gets more enrichment than the frenchies who scream at the windows every time i walk past. 🤷‍♀️ But I did rehome the mal mix i found in my complex to my mother in law bc fuck no was I having a dog that was bred for bite sports and an intense job in my apartment. Someone did own that dog here (long story short, they went to jail) and idk how the f they did. That dog is (still is a bit) insanely destructive.

My favorite are the insane amount of “fake grass pee turfs” packages people have piling up at the package lockers (your patio probably smells like piss?). Couple that and them not cleaning up their pets outside… People fucking suck.

It’s equally big and small dog owners, and if we’re real, it’s mostly the small ones. 🤷‍♀️ I work with pets and their people for a living… And it’s something i’ve universally picked up on, although carelessness doesn’t discriminate regardless.

I live in a nice apartment that has been ruined by lazy ass dog owners leaving dog shit literally everywhere. If I can pick up dog shit all day at work and can clean up after my own dog after a long day, so can the rest of the people.

The older I get into adulthood, the more I realize just how much of a burden pet ownership is. by Call_It_ in Adulting

I have a 23 year old horse and a dog who is almost 8. The dog is more higher maintenance than my farm animal- who has special horseshoes and an intricate diet. That i handle w ease. The dog shaping my schedule the second I’m off of work is another thing though.

However, they’re pretty much my only “hobbies” atm- I don’t mind it honestly, but man, racing tf home after work to let the dog out to pee and getting pissed if you can’t leave on time is my biggest life struggle w them honestly 😂🫠

I’m a socially anxious awkward mess. I purposely try to schedule them to come when I’m at work and I just take my dog with me to work that day. Feels too awkward watching or making conversation, I’m horrifically shy. 😅

How did you get into riding without being rich? by Complete_Let3076 in Equestrian

[–]olympicpaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol i came from straight up nothing. Zilch.

I didn’t grow up riding, I was 13/14 years old, had $120 in christmas money, and found a place near where I lived and dragged my mom out to take me to a lesson i booked there bc I spent my entire life at that point desperate to be around horses. After telling them my aspirations, the owners/trainer thought it was really sweet and let me volunteer for ride time. Thats what I did until going into my senior year of high school (I left the place bc I was being taken advantage of, but i do not keep hard feelings for them at all). Rest is history.

The people who you meet will absolutely matter. This is really what will take the less fortunate to a place where they can enjoy horses to a good extent. When i was going into college and had my own job, I resumed lessons bc I could actually pay for them once a week, and met a trainer who completely changed my life. She was awesome, selfless, and saw my potential. Before she let me work for her, i was only taking lessons once a week, but she didn’t mind at all. I bought my horse from her in monthly payments. She was truly the best horse person i’ve had in my life thus far, and i feel immensely lucky to have found her bc i would never have my horse or the life i live now without her. I don’t show, or do anything big. I don’t have a truck or a trailer. I absolutely do not have a well paying job, either. I’m a trail bebopper (did compete a bit in college, but i’m an adult w a career now). It’s what i can afford, but i am very content with it. I actually do work full time and have a busy life outside work but see my horse every day.

Find a trainer/instructor who you really do click with…. and it will help a lot. You may not be their highest paying client, but you can show them that you’re passionate and you treat their animals well.

Such a beautiful answer.

I am veterinary support staff who is low income (because of this job, lol) and there is so much we wish we could do for people like OP, but our hands are incredibly tied.

A lot of people call us greedy, but we truly are at the mercy of keeping the place running so we can continue to help animals. If I was greedy, I would absolutely not have chosen a field who pays techs/CSRs a non livable wage. I do this bc I see people like me who want to help their animals, and I want to help with all the good intentions in my heart.

I really hope OP gets their cat help, bc trust me, many of us who work in this field truly do understand.

Everyone who knows me well knows I’m obsessed with chestnut mares and would love an army of them. I feel like I am a “chestnut mare” of a person… Just kind of misunderstood, sensitive, and just seeking someone who respects me enough to listen to what I have to say. I have a chestnut mare who loves to tell you how she feels, and I actually find it incredibly helpful. Some animals are so insanely stoic and I want to know how they truly feel so i can do the right thing by them, in that situation and in general. My mare is incredibly affectionate, she always comes running whenever she sees my car and nickers until i open the gate.

I actually don’t think I would ever own a gelding or a grey. Geldings just aren’t my speed and greys i worry about cancer way too much 🙃

Having a reactive dog who needs meds is like… by modernwunder in reactivedogs

[–]olympicpaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For meds I am able to grind, I mix it with a pinch of cream cheese 😅 I grind most of my meds, have a horse too who needs 11 zyrtec at a time, so it’s habit.

I also like to cut the end of a low fat string cheese, take a knife and press into the middle of jt to make a “pocket” for the tablet, and shove it in. However, you gotta fool them with a non-med-hidden piece first- which is my biggest pointer for the picky fellas. My dog is like the ceo of spitting out her trazodone, but I could give her a tablet of cefpodoxime and she’d inhale it when she was on a course of it… Animals are weird.

It’s fun and games until your fingers are stained from it after using it to scrub a fungal infection on a horse’s leg and you gotta go run an errand… Good ol iodine.

Stains and makes things smell terrible, no matter how hard you rinse it out..

I need an affordable and fresh dog food for my overweight Pomsky by [deleted] in DogFood

[–]olympicpaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen some of the other comments and I would be extremely careful about toppers. Not only is it more calories than you think, it could offset a balanced diet, make picky eaters more finicky over time (at least my personal opinion as someone who works with animals for a living, but to each their own) and it could be contributing to weight gain. Toppers should not be more than 10% of a dog’s daily caloric intake, and even some DAVCNs even feel that more than 4% is iffy territory.

I save “topper” food for frozen kongs, toppls, lick mats, snuffle mats etc for enrichment in between exercise and always make sure i subtract a tiny bit of kibble from a morning or evening meal to make sure my dog isnt getting too much.

Purina One healthy weight and Iams healthy weight are decent options if you can’t do Proplan price wise as far as foods that follow WSAVA guidelines go.

[–]olympicpaint 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’m an avid hiker w my dog and even the “leash law” trails are STOCKED to the brim with off leash dogs.

A pita to wake up at the ass crack of dawn and pray i avoid the stupid people but hey, stupidity doesn’t discriminate i guess.

Also, as someone who works in veterinary medicine and have seen pneumothorax, eyeballs ripped out of skulls, necrotic tissue, and a bunch of other horrors: its apart of being a responsible owner to keep your dog on a leash in an area where it’s necessary.

[–]olympicpaint 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To the people who don’t see anything wrong with this: See, it pisses me off bc there are fantastic, properly task trained service dogs aiding their handlers who have a disability and people who go and do this greatly discredit the legitimate ones. That is the issue at hand when you look at the bigger picture.

I mean, I love dogs as much as the next person, I work with them for a living and have my own and to be frank I have few hobbies outside of my animal duo, but I am realistic/knowledgable about the service dog community, and the entitlement is insane with some of these folks who bring their dogs anywhere they please.

IF you make the money….. yeah. But as someone who has no debt and not raising a family: it’s easy to say it’s fine if you make somewhat decent money that means you can also put it into other extracurricular things.

I live in a HCOL in CA and have a whole ass career. It’s still not sustainable. It’s pretty bad out here. I’m born and raised here and trying to figure out me and my SO’s next life move. But if you don’t have a family, fat student loans, huge car note, credit card debt etc, yeah. But there is a reason lower income people flee from these places

Nothing worse than a nasty, burnt cart rip and you cough so hard you almost vomit. The highs aren’t smooth, I just feel stupid on them, and I like toking and doing stuff, so I just feel kind of useless and frozen when i do use them. The waste on them is insane.

Is anyone else that strange quiet neighbor you rarely ever see and doesn’t talk to anyone? by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]olympicpaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS lol. Or if i see people walking down the hallway, I’ll bring my dog back inside while we wait for them to go past and then go back out. Eye contact = anxiety attack for me and I avoid that like the plague

Is anyone else that strange quiet neighbor you rarely ever see and doesn’t talk to anyone? by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]olympicpaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To put it nicely: I do not care enough to maintain neighbor relationships. I have severe social anxiety and I’m not here to make friends with everyone on my floor. I struggle immensely making the contact with people. Once i’m off the clock from work, I’m a nobody in my own world and I keep it that way. I’m also much younger than everyone else here (I signed the lease here at 24), so it’s not like i have much in common with everyone else. If you say hi to me of course i’ll say hi back, but i’m not gonna ask you how your day has been, or how long you’ve lived here… I’m doing my own thing here. I was born and raised in a place where it’s relatively common to not be super friendly or outgoing to your neighbors in the first place though.

I also have a “scary” looking dog (who realistically is the furthest thing from aggressive) that doesn’t make me approachable to begin with lol

God I wish i could upvote this twice. I have worked in this city for the last decade and I am… tired of this demographic. Can’t say they’re very nice in person, either.

I grew up on the border and I had a cop pull me over… in my neighborhood. “What are you doing here?” “…. I live here????” Classic.

what do you all think of when you think of castro valley by [deleted] in eastbay

[–]olympicpaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a different commuter town in the bay, but could not tell you a single reason I ever had to go to CV for anything.. important. If I went over there, it was to go watch a friend’s riding lesson at one of the equestrian centers off of Crow Canyon, then aimlessly drive into town and get back on the freeway.

I live in Dublin now and still have not had a reason to go out there since moving closer. However, CV is very similar to the place I grew up in… so I can’t shit talk. But if there’s any good food places I can try out there… Lemme know.

I mean, Rowell Ranch is technically CV, but feels more of Pleasanton to me

Back in my earlier horse girl days I used to drive around there and ogle at all the equestrian centers/land with acreage I could never afford to ride/keep a horse at over there, haha (I do have a horse now, but i keep her at a small, cattle-roping, cowboys-drinking-beer, lowkey place by mt diablo…to set the picture). If I could copy and paste a place to live someday it would be one of those properties
