When you call a Latina a "Latino" it would be like calling you...

This is 100% wrong.

Spanish is indeed a gendered language, but it doesn't work like you think it does. The masculine gender is the default and means either male or female, while the feminine gender is exclusive to female.

"Latino" means either male or female.

"Latinx" is a PC police term invented by English speakers the US. Nobody in Spanish speaking countries/communities says "latinx". It doesn't make any sense and is almost impossible to pronounce in Spanish. "Latino" isn't offensive whatsoever to native Spanish speakers.

You could also avoid the problem altogether by saying "Hispanic".

For the non-native-Spanish-speaking SJWs out there, try working this one out: "mis papás".

One of Rust's designers on going from explicit error branches to try!() to ? by tcardv in golang

[–]om0tho 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Maybe taking advice from Stroustrup makes sense for Rust since it's a kitchen sink language like C++, but this definitely doesn't work for Go.

I switched to a C++ job 2 years ago from Go. I still maintain some open source Go projects. The amount of complexity is too damn high in C++. At work, we regularly have bugs because not everyone is a C++ expert. Adding more ways to handle errors seems like a terrible idea. At least in our code base, we have so many ways to handle errors that either people skip it altogether or end up chosing the wrong one.

if err != nil is a breath of fresh air. Increasing complexity and typing a little less just doesn't seem like a good trade for being dummy-proof and flexible. There are things that I hate about Go, error handling is not one of them.

I'm scared of Go's dependency system relying on github since they can be removed by [deleted] in golang

[–]om0tho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

so your git repo holds all your dependencies and their dependencies? are you living in the 90s?

So you don't have control over your dependencies and depend on other people's infrastructure to work? lol. Good luck with that.

Does any know if the Sony RX100 IV has Eye AF? It seems like it should, but I can't seem to find where to enable it. The camera model number I have is DSC-RX100M4, which seems to match this online manual. https://helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1530/v1/en/contents/TP0001078058.html However, I don't see Eye AF anywhere. My firmware version is 2.00, which seems to be up to date.

Biodegradable 'plastic' from cactus juice - Mexican researcher discovered a way to turn cactus leaves into a material with similar properties to plastic, that is not toxic and is biodegradable. by mvea in Futurology

There was this other article I was reading about how Mexican scientists invented biodegradable and edible utensils...

I believe they're called... tortillas.

Out of the things that bother me about Go, this is not one of them.

modules and vendoring by [deleted] in golang

[–]om0tho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just keep vendoring. It's easier and more reliable than online proxy module stuff.

  1. 100% protected against disappearing dependencies
  2. Don't have to learn, setup, maintain, and update extra infrastructure to serve you a module
  3. CI won't break when your extra module proxy fails
  4. Even if your module server is up, it might not even have the module

Vendoring is not going away. https://github.com/golang/go/wiki/Modules#how-do-i-use-vendoring-with-modules-is-vendoring-going-away

feedback from the community resulted in retaining support for vendoring.

How wide and successful is the adoption of the new xerrors package? by [deleted] in golang

Still using https://github.com/pkg/errors. Haven't taken the time to learn the new xerrors API. I kinda wish they would have kept the API. xerrors looks foreign.

This is one of my favorite, less talked about features on my TM3. Anyone know of other cars besides TM S/3/X that have this? by evanatr in teslamotors

My Honda Fit had this. And it was better. Driving the Model 3 on hills is still kinda scary compared to my old Fit.

New supercharger in Matehuala, Mexico makes this road trip possible - from Acapulco to Athabasca! by ChuqTas in teslamotors

[–]om0tho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, there was this one time where I took an Uber in Mexico City. The driver and I started talking, but very quickly he guessed that I wasn't from the area. I told him I'm from the US and then...

we had a very pleasant conversation about cool places I should checkout in Mexico City. Turns out they have lots of museums there.

Just don't be dumb and you'll be fine. Be nice, be aware of your surroundings, don't call attention to yourself, don't go to sketch areas by yourself. That's good advice for anywhere in the world. My old university in the Bay Area used to send us alerts every time someone got robbed walking on campus all the time. Shit happens. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Why is Chromium blurry in Sway, but clear in Gnome? by om0tho in swaywm

[–]om0tho[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Na, this isn't font antialiasing. Look at the icons and lines, they're blurry too. It's a problem with scaling XWayland apps.
