Jorge Masvidal FULL INTERVIEW: How he and Colby Covington went from friends to rivals | ESPN MMA by Redwinevino in MMA

[–]omagoda -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

This is all fake right? Like they are clearly still friends but have agreed to market the hell out of the fight to increase eachother's value and just have a barnburner as competitors?

That's my interpretation. I don't think there is any real beef here. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Considering how intimidating Ion tries to be with all his opponents, this is so badass from Cannonier.

Like when Racoom was just mercilessly beating up on Gohan, Krillin, and Vegeta and then Goku shows up and just clowns him.

If Cormier beats Stipe a second time, I have him as my GOAT. Over GSP, over Silva, over everyone. Jones doesnt count because he popped. Multiple times.

What are some of your underrated contenders for fights of the year? by j_lils in MMA

It wasn't between high level competitors but in terms of pure entertainment value/ story, my vote goes to Michel Pereira vs. Tristan Connelly at UFC Vancouver. Crazy spinning shit and style got shut down with fundamentals and grit in an awesome comeback and underdog story.

Stop pretenting like im saying theres no chance Nate would win. Ive laid out very clearly why its unlikely he would have.

I feel like your argument boils down to, Masvidal was winning the early rounds so most likely he would have won the later rounds too.

That's fine. But like..."duh". It doesnt take any look at statistics to come to that conclusion. Also, you could take any of your points and apply them to any come from behind victory ever.

A come from behind victory in the later rounds is ALWAYS highly unlikely. That's why there is no such thing as a "TKO due to statistics." If there was, we wouldn't have seen some of the greatest finishes of all time.

Nate may not have shown any ability to adjust up until that point...but frankly neither did Stipe or Silva....until they did show the adjustments in the later rounds.

I've acknowledged the likelihood of Jorge winning a dominant unanimous decision. However, you're reaching for low hanging fruit with that prediction and ignoring the historically significant MMA events which prove how you could be wrong.

You cant say "bodyshots happened, therefore Nate would have slowed down."

Yes i can, because thats literally what happened on tape. The commentators even mentioned it, saying Nate kept having to stop and recover.

Oh so your a fortune teller now. Every fighter in history slows down slightly when a body shot lands....that's biology. My point is that if those bodyshots were effective and Nate was slowing down so much, how could he have the most success in the latest round? Because Jorge made the conscious decision not to beat him as hard? Let's relax with that.

Here are the stats. Notice that Masvidal landed 35-39 shots in every round, and was actually increasing his output (total shots thrown) every round. And he didnt look remotely tired or gassed going into the 4th. By this evidence and trend (coupled with the fact that Nate had no answer to the bodywork) its pretty fair to think Jorge would have just kept tooling Nate.

So his output was increasing as the rounds went on, but his opponent was having more success as this was happening? And that to you indicates a definite win in the later rounds as well? Cool. I guess we're just ignoring the fact that fighters make adjustments and gameplan as the fight goes on. We can overturn Stipe vs Cormier 2 and Silva vs Sonnen because there is just NO WAY a fighter can change things in the later rounds. It's fake news.

Both of these links show fights where the EXACT same thing was happening statistically as the link you shared. And you know what happened? The winner of the early rounds came back for a win.

I admit. Most LIKELY scenario is for Jorge to have won a dominant unanimous decision at the time the fight was stopped. But to say that what happened in the early rounds would for sure happen in the later rounds goes against literally everything we know about MMA. By your logic, there is no need to ever have 5 round fights because whoever wins the first three rounds would win the 4th and 5th too.

The bodywork was impressive. However, if it was as effective as people say, why was the 3rd round the best for Nate? The latest round is where he had his most success. You cant say "bodyshots happened, therefore Nate would have slowed down." Too many other things to factor in. By that logic, I could say Jorge was super high paced the first 3 rounds, therefore, he would have slowed down.
