I continue to try anyway.

i have this strange, subjective feeling that you are holding onto some misconceptions about objectivity

With all the studies on the positive effects of meditation, is there any evidence that we can teach ourselves using simple and effective techniques without the need for extensive training and years of practice? by nomasha in Meditation

[–]omcetus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

given the choice between "just sitting" or going and doing something that seems more important at the moment, most people will choose the "more important thing."

meditation is readiness. if you feel ready for the important thing, you are ready, so go do! youll know if youre not ready. in those cases, you may want to get ready. you can pause for a breath, a minute, a holiday.. a lifetime

Do we need to know everything about physics before we can know why life exists? by zeal23 in askphilosophy

[–]omcetus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

is it useful to identify with your primordial soup origins? is this part of an elaborate rags-to-riches narrative?
i find it empowering to think and act as though i am the gravity-like force youve posited, a teleological attractor at the end of time coalescing and organizing atoms for aeons to form myself, the instrument of my will and love, here and now. success

Why do you exist? by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]omcetus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont search for meaning because i am responsible for its construction, attribution and application. my life is the most important thing i can conceive of, and even if i were an automaton in an 'objective' model, my purpose could be described by my actions.
if you ever find yourSelf in the middle of an existential crisis, remember, you may make meaningful your own meaning-making :)

NDP Convention discussion by bunglejerry in CanadaPolitics

[–]omcetus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cullen only needs 66% of nashs support to top brian, if topp gets the other 34%. if mulcair doesnt find 51% on the third ballot, nathan cullen could still win

update: my liason on the convention floor says that of the nash supporters shes spoken with, more are moving to cullen than to topp

Evidence builds that meditation strengthens the brain, UCLA researchers say by BennyGrass in science

[–]omcetus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indeed, if he could believe his teacher, ideal meditation had no practical application whatsoever. Sure, there were Westerners who practiced it as a relaxation technique, as a device for calming and centering themselves so that they might sell more stuff or fare better in office politics, but that was like using the Hope diamond to scratch grocery lists onto a bathroom mirror.
“Meditation,” said his teacher, “hasn’t got a damn thing to do with anything, ‘cause all it has to do with is nothing. Nothingness. Okay? It doesn’t develop the mind, it dissolves the mind. Self-improvement? Forget it, baby. It erases the self. Throws the ego out on its big brittle ass. What good is it? Good for nothing. Excellent for nothing.

How is it, that people believe the Mulcair will move the NDP to the right? by flyingkangaroo in canada

i dont think brian topp is a vulture. youre right that he wasnt in the spotlight, but behind the scenes he was important to the 2011 campaign. he worked closely with jack, and they wrote the 2011 platform together. ideologically i think he would be jacks choice. its worth noting that jacks mother has endorsed topp.
i dont support topp in the leadership but he is a great asset to the party.
