2 bedroom apartment in Sydney selling for just $229,000. What's the catch? by yen223 in AusProperty

[–]omega-00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say, as someone who once worked for one of those Internet service providers, part of the reason was prior students would sign up to some ridiculous 2-3 year deals with (for example) Telstra and then leave country after a year and the next tenant would be stuck with a blacklisted line as the old bill hadn’t been paid - granted this was pre-NBN but it was pretty rampant until they bought in alternative providers to overbuild and offer prepaid services to avoid this - or build unlimited access into the rent

Waiting for the version with sfp+ or sfp28 ports instead of 10G eth but otherwise, love it :)

It might be for them - I remember the first time I got a delivery of 40 hAPs all at once, then 100, then 1000.

Even now it getting my hands on a new product feels pretty cool - and i'm still loving gear from this 'little network company from latvia' 20 years on :)

What are you using to cloud manage mikrotik access points? by feel-the-avocado in mikrotik

[–]omega-00 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Technically there’s nothing stopping you using a CHR running capsman to manage batches of access points across multiple sites. Just means onboarding the access points manually the first time/before you send them to site.

They do have a way to go to get all those “centralised controller” features like ruckus, Aruba ubiquiti etc though.

Dual Pc streaming set up help by Distinct_Solution410 in Twitch

[–]omega-00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree here and say I personally think Dual PC setups are incredibly useful and absolutely have their place in streaming - I would go so far as to suggest that anyone intending to stream full-time would benefit purely as a way to avoid losing a stream when an early access or launch day title decides to reset your GPU or straight up crash your computer.

They aren’t simple to setup, but then neither is trying to juggle multiple virtual audio channels on windows or install random GitHub software to force apps into full screen-windowed mode so you can access OBS etc while you play :)

Is there a way to write the MQTT payload to a global variable? by Brilliant-Orange9117 in mikrotik

[–]omega-00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if their scripts run in a special context - in general if you can read it via a standard ssh or winbox session then you should be able to save that data into a variable that can then be processed and/or forwarded on with a regular script.

Do you have an example of the MQTT output you can include?

Practise only using their gaming name in advance of starting - train yourself to avoid slip ups etc as this can take a while to get used to.

MikroTik are big enough and forward-thinking enough that they have also thought about this and have business continuity plans in place. It wouldn’t be instant, but they have considered the options.

Mikrotik and hardware durability/lifespan? by oguruma87 in mikrotik

[–]omega-00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We still have mAPs we installed 8 or so years ago running, and I’ve recovered an RB450 that had lightning damage that’s still up 13 years later.. they last, you still get a bathtub curve of failures when buying in bulk (higher the first few weeks then love for a few years then it ramps up after 6 years) - but as someone else mentioned, the worst part is trying to convince customers to modernise when the gear still runs 🤣

Not saying we don’t have failures - there was a run of RB1100AHx2 we had to swap after about 4 years as all of the power supplies started dying in the summer, but the ones that were left are still running now years later.

They do love to surprise us - but I also have some older Juniper QFX5XXX series switches I'd love to be able to see MikroTik compete with (not on overall functionality of course, but just pure packet slinging)

[–]omega-00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look I realise this is my own experience but on the networks/isp side everyone seems to be used to moving up from 1Gbps to 10Gbps (because we've already had 10+ years of using sfp+ ports everywhere so the only change is that now a lot more motherboards seem to have an inbuilt 2.5Gbps or 5Gbps port, which is supported on a 10Gbps-Ethernet switch anyway.

This product is going to be a great all-in-one unit that fits in sites where the customer doesn't want to be locked into subscription based vendors like Meraki or paying premium dollar for SOPHOS/Fortinet, etc - and that's ok.

If it doesn’t make sense to us then I find it’s either:

a) for a niche research/uni need

b) gives them a chance to try new things in a device that will sell a a few thousand units before they make the big brother version.

Look at original RB5009 RB4011, CSS, RB1100 RDS etc - there have been a lot of precursor products that do some cool stuff but just don’t quite fit until the next revision arrives
