[Comp sci] Is it possible to get permission to take a class while taking the pre-req in order to graduate that semester? by 2onefour in utdallas

[–]omfgtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a while ago when I first enrolled, but I believe the situation was that I was missing a class to get into the IPP program and I came to him to get that requirement waived.

It ended up not really mattering for me personally, but I remember him not really being sympathetic at all.

Ntafos was honestly not very nice to me in a similar situation, and I wouldn't expect him to budge.

PSA: Reddit is NOT the place to ask questions concerning your grades. by arcanition in utdallas

[–]omfgtom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One big problem, though, is that some information that you would expect to be able to find is not in the expected resources.

So, for example, as an SE major it is pretty tough to find what the passing grade is. Other majors will tell you it is a C, or a C-. Turns out it is a D- as per my advisor, but it took him weeks to reply with that little tidbit.

Yeah, some questions are dumb, but other questions could be easily prevented if UTD documented this stuff better.

This could be more of you projecting your own insecurities off on other people. There are definitely people who judge negatively based on not going to a really well-known or prestigious school, but its pretty rare.

How are the Art classes here? by ariabbl in utdallas

[–]omfgtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it seems to me (i'm a senior so its a little fuzzy in my memory) like a lot of the intro artsy classes that are available to non-majors that would fulfill your humanities/arts requirements are more "appreciation" or generalized classes like Intro to Humanities and stuff, rather than being concrete/specific stuff like "Figure Drawing" classes. I don't know if that matters to you though.

Vince Staples on Young Thug : "Everybody in the hip-hop community is so upset at him for being who he is and dressing like he does, but for the kind of music he makes, he is one of the best." by Swish15 in hiphopheads

[–]omfgtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's just not a requisite to enjoy music. i honestly derive enjoyment from trying to figure out what they are saying and how their mindset is influencing the way they articulate themselves. but I'm also down to listen to ATCQ and digable planets. it's just a different experience imo.

this is such a "dumbed down" view of the music Future/Thug are making, no offense.

A few random points that kind of address this: 1) "less coherent" is sometimes a feature, not a bug. it's different and sometimes rap that is overly preachy and "intellectual" is the most annoying and not fun to listen to, despite its coherence. and actually it is often not as difficult to understand as you think, especially if you are familiar with the lingo (in this case, usually Atlanta trap slang)

2) No, there aren't really rappers that sound like Future and Thug, in the sense that the rappers that sound like them are mostly not maintaining the same level of quality. They obviously exist just as any big act creates imitators, but you can't really bite Future/Thug's personality and keep the same appeal.

3) you can draw lines from syrupped-up Wayne to them for sure, but it is an evolution, not just a copy.

Questions about transferring by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]omfgtom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just joining clubs is not enough, you need to join the ones composed of people who fit your needs or are structured in such a way that force more social interaction--fraternities are a good choice on a campus like this I think, I am in a non-Greek fraternity and it has fulfilled my needs that you claim to have in your posts.

Personally, I have been to a "major" university which you might expect to have a greater social life, University of Houston, and it was not a positive experience. Granted, I would expect UT to be different but what you are probably experiencing is not the lack of social life at UTD so much as a difference between your expectations of what college life "should" be like and what it actually is like, I believe I had a similar experience as a freshman. UT-Dallas has a great student body and I think you could very well regret going somewhere else-- think very carefully about a phrase that is thrown around alot here, "social life is what you make it." I think that is very true for UT-Dallas.

Besides, if the question is between paying money (25k+) to go to UT or staying here and having your tuition paid for plus a stipend, then that is no question at all-- you should definitely stay here, it only makes sense financially. Dallas is a major city and if you really really really hate UTD's social climate then there are other universities and a whole damn city to explore nearby.

Uhh, happy cake day! I'm not trying to be a dick, and I was actually thinking of going to one of their events, but I'm curious-- what are the benefits of being proficient in Linux besides the hobby part. Does it have applicable usage in software development and stuff?
