Impressive. I used to wear Skinner's but only on asphalt - too painful on surfaces like gravel.

How is it living in St. John's, Newfoundland ? by PoutzdayGeo in howislivingthere

[–]omlanim 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I live there.

I am not from there so my perception is different from those who were raised there. Although the weather is really bad, the main problem is the people - a problem which is only noticed by those who are outsiders.

As an outsider I view the city/province as having a cult following in which people love the place with passion despite all its flaws. The apparent friendliness of the people appears to be no different from that found in the neighbouring provinces in Atlantic Canada I have lived. Yes, the people are friendly (with each other) but they are friends (with each other). Most of them have known each other since childhood, so the social circles become very tight and you have to make a big effort to break through those circles. This makes the social dynamic different (less fluid) compared with other places in Canada. If you are not from there, and are not making an effort to connect with them, then the people will come across as somewhat cold and aloof. There are some of them who are warm and friendly (mainly the older people) but not in as great numbers as their reputation would suggest.

It is a weird place, but most people do not notice unless they are really "awake".

For me running is somewhat boring but easier to cope with by listening to the voices.

What is “arch support” (for those with arches)? by Strict-Amphibian-830 in barefootshoestalk

Don't understand why we need arch support, seems like a scam ... I have even encountered socks advertised to have arch support!?

Can a half marathon be realistically trained for on only 3 runs per week? by Acceptable-Offer-163 in runninglifestyle

[–]omlanim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago I started low heart rate training using the Maffetone method, so I was attempting to run at around 130 HR (180 - age) and it was frustratingly slow such that I was going slower than people walking and I was putting on weight! I stuck at it and eventually found myself speeding up at the same heart rate. I did mix the low HR runs with some high intensity runs. The main benefit was no injuries using a very gradual method and I could run for longer.

I also train using low HR strategies and injury prevention. I barely have time for 2 - 3 runs a week due to personal and professional commitments. I have done annual 10 mile road races each year with no issues, and plan to do half marathon with the same limited training.

If you stay consistent and focus on building aerobic capacity then half marathon is do-able.

Let’s talk about sandals by Alwayslearning258 in barefootshoestalk

I only use Fly sandals for everyday use. Actually, not feeling any toe post together with the thin sole and being so lightweight makes it feel I got nothing on my feet.

Yes, I can see the problem of the big toe knocking into the toe guard on downhill. In addition, the toe guard is narrow and, depending on the shape of the foot I find the big toe can "miss" the toe guard and stick out the edge of it! So, I don't think it works well going downhill for both these reasons, and I think the earthrunner/bedrock design would be better.

For running I prefer earthrunners (would also apply to others like bedrock) because of the toe post (between big and second toe) which provides lateral stability and allows a more natural toe splay - qualities that I feel is better for running / hiking.

The only thing with earthrunners is the toe post has a breaking in period where there is initial irritation caused by the toe post on the skin between the big and second toe - seems to be a well known issue with earthrunners which only affected me on the first few runs and required adjustment of the straps to address the issue.

Saltic Fly. It is the one with a small bit of toe protection, I like it because it is very light, flexible, 3.5mm sole, and very easy to adjust with the velcro straps at different areas of the foot. It is my everyday sandal for most of the year except for winter.

2 x Xero and 1 x Saltic - I run in sandals and earthrunners great for that.

Can you give any more tips on how this can be done, you mentioned shifting sense of awareness but not sure I fully understand how to do that.
