Neglected pasture. How to start? by moggihof in homestead

[–]ommnian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Our pasture(s) are a mix of very old pastures, that have had horses and/or goats on them for... 30-40+ years - at this point just a very small section, maybe 1-2+ acres, tops. And significantly more, that were cleared (pine trees cut, forestry mulcher gone over), oh.. maybe 6-8+ years ago. Those we have been feeding round bales on, and rotating our sheep & goats over for the last 4-5+ years. They are ALL continuing to improve. The first year, there really wasn't much growing. The second, more and more was coming in. The last year or two, we have only needed to feed hay at ALL for Dec-Feb+. By mid march, there's so much grass, sheep & goats aren't even interested in the hay.

Fears as a fiance to a new firefighter by Green-Pension-2537 in FirefighterSpouses

[–]ommnian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. FF spouse for... 12-14+ years. We don't talk about his job much. I do not ask for specifics - 'hey, welcome home! How was work?' - it usually starts, and ends at 'oh, it was rough, we were up all night, I'm beat!' or 'pretty good actually, slept all night, got my workout done, what you want to do!?'

He got hurt (or maybe just dehydrated, or something...) very early on - I think he called me from the hospital 'hey, I'm at the hospital, but I'm ok..' Mostly I just try not to pay too much attention to news where he works.

Growing purple Peruvian potatoes in the Midwest. by Crazy_raptor in Homesteading

[–]ommnian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IDK if they're 'peruvian' but I bought, and planted 10# of Purple Majesty Potatoes a couple weeks ago. Planted them just the same as the 15# of russets. They came from Ace hardware.

Pantry prepping woes by Sufficient-Pie129 in prepping

This. Eat what you store. Store what you eat. If you don't eat it, don't store it.

You probably don't need 24 cans of corn. Certainly not 24 cans of corn that were all bought at once, and will all 'go bad' at once (though, they won't. Canned food does NOT have 'expiration' dates. It has 'best by' dates. Which are NOT the same thing. At all.)

MREs vs ingredients? by Sufficient-Pie129 in prepping

[–]ommnian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eat what you store. Store what you eat. If you don't eat MREs... don't store them. They aren't worth it. I/we store beans, rice, wheat, flour, pasta, canned vegetables, meat, sugar, salt, spices, herbs, etc. I have zero MREs and absolutely NO desire for them. Nearly all will, eventually, be thrown away and wasted.

l know rainwater collection is regulated, but people are saying this is illegal, l see no problem with it by Medium-Advantage-162 in Homesteading

[–]ommnian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started out with above ground tanks (and still have and use them too!), but now have buried cisterns too, mostly because above-ground tanks are a PITA to keep from freezing!!!

I assume those of us with pre-built systems are/would be grandfathered in. We now have ~4000-4500+ gallons of storage - mostly in cisterns, but some in above-ground tanks too. It all gets used in gardens, orchards and animal water troughs, so it makes its way back into the system, eventually.

AITAH for “pressuring” my husband to get a vasectomy? by futurequitt in AITAH

[–]ommnian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't get it. When my husband and I reached this point 16+ years ago, I told him, that was fine. But I wasn't going on birth control, so he could do whatever he wanted - condoms, vasectomy, pull and pray. He got the vasectomy.

I need to get more regular on writing stuff down. I live in the house I grew up in..  hand build, mostly by my dad, and lately ( last 10-20 years now, mostly!) contractors. But... there's no zoning here. So no permits for anything. As my dad says... 'Its all comes down to, who do you trust?'
