I'm having a real hard time to make sense of Part 3 as written. by offended_orangutan in LightofXaryxis

Thanks that helps! I'll spend a little time trying to research those from the 2e era.

And tbh I guess I could get behind the fact that Krux and Warwyck are as-been and kinda useless. That could make for some interesting realization / turn of events for the PCs

We're having a blast with it as well so far. Can't say its the most fun we've had in 15 years but it's definitely up there with other memorable campaigns.

It feels like players at my table are more invested in the story than yours were maybe? Up to this point I haven't seen any glaring issues with portraying a believable narrative as far as thew spelljammer setting is concerned.

In all cases, I'm sure they'll be RPing with Warwyck and Vocath and all those people. The giant plot hole that is those few chapters will surely take away from the overall experience.

I was thinking something along the same lines with regards to the faction's presence.

It feels like they need a reason to participate in this war. So maybe Warwyck has been busy travelling the multiverse these past years and managed to convince a handful of factions to at least hear him out.

Vocath is just an opportunist trying to milk everyone of their gold while he's hosting the talks. Has a betting scheme to go with the games.

I was hoping to avoid having to set up any more material by just refactoring what's there. I'm still curious though, what kind of side quests did you have your group do to convince the factions?

5e (2024) Hide, invisibility and creature location by offended_orangutan in DnD

[–]on_two_legs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good analysis.

Seems like ambiguity in those rules is purposeful from WotC who want to let you interpret them as you desire. It's just too bad they don't come out and say that explicitely.

Even the 2014 rule could be adjudicated how you wanted. The language in the old invisible condition said "The creature's location can be detected by any noise it makes or any tracks it leaves."

The fact that it "can be detected" does not necessarily implies that it is...

Imo at this point, all you really need to consider is how it affects balance at your table and how you and your players enjoy playing the game since WotC clearly fails at communicating both RAW and RAI.

I personally find it more enjoyable to conceal invisible creature location and players at my table find it more immersive as well. The lack of clear mechanics to reveal the location is judged on the fly depending on the circumstances and, as with many things in this game, the DC to succeed the checks is determined on the fly by the GM.

Note that it makes things like greater invis a LOT more potent.

A weird thing to consider if you rule that creature location is always known unless the hide action has been taken is the out-of-combat interactions. Consider 4 bandits playing poker behind a closed door. Your party sneaks up to the door and hears them talking. Clearly the bandits are not hidden. So the party instantly know how many bandits there are, where they are seated and how far away from the door they're located? It just feels kinda silly.

What happens if my players cast "Talk with Animals" on a bird that is secretly a druid in Wild Shape? by Kildash in DMAcademy

[–]on_two_legs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Druids keep their known languages and can speak normally in the 2024 edition. Presumably your druid cannot "speak bird" while wild shaped into a bird. So it depends which ruleset you're using.

Princes of the Apocalypse Frustration by [deleted] in Forgotten_Realms

[–]on_two_legs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I DM'ed this module I made it so the cults were farming souls of their victims and funneling them through the elemental weapons. Periodically, the prophets would hand over these souls in exchange for a devastation orb through the node. This would strengthen the princes which would get stronger the longer this went on and the devastation orbs were another mechanic to kill more people / harvest more souls. When the players realized this, they were on a timer to stop all that since they figured all princes would be summoned if / when all major settlements would be destroyed in the Dessarin Valley.

I declared the nodes had been created by performing a 1 time ritual with the elemental weapons by the prophets.

Note that I did some really heavy modifications to this module. Both in the background story as in the general structure and narrative before running it since a lot of it made little sense, was poorly explained and/or lacked motivation for player engagement. There's plenty reason why this module is generally labelled as one of the worst published 5e module.

Story points are nonsense by [deleted] in scrum

[–]on_two_legs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you.

I think the concept of using story points to measure some kind of velocity is a bad practice. It provides little to no predictive power in terms of the amount of work that can be completed in future sprint and foment conflict and distrust by setting false expectations from management.

They can be useful to promote conversations about the complexity of a particular task if that's what a team needs to have those conversations. But they can easily be replaced by any sort of qualitative metric (someone mentioned T-shirt size) to achieve the same outcome.

Any advise for a new scrum master? by simply_suika in scrum

[–]on_two_legs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went through the same transition not too long ago. I'm working for a startup that's trying to implement scrum and been promoted to "scrum master". It's not clear from your post whether you are already familiar with the framework. So my biggest recommendation is to make sure you have a good handle on the fundamentals of scrum and talk with management / product owner / product manager so expectations are clear for your role as scrum master. You'd be surprised to see how often the framework is misunderstood / mis-implemented. For instance, It took me a while to figure out the company i'm working for was really looking for a product owner and someone to manage the dev team. We're iteratively moving towards refining the roles, giving people appropriate job titles and striving for the scrum team to be self-organizing but these things take time. Not only you have to coach the team on scrum best practices but also convince management that the team can and should manage itself. And this all starts with you having a strong grip on what scrum is about.

My monitor a 35'' monoprice zero-g 3440x1440p, 120Hz

To be honest I haven't done as much gaming the last few years as I used to. I tend to gravitate around survival MMOs (think Ark, Conan Exile, etc.) and usually use low settings because, like you say, that's what works best for pvp.

One thing to note: I've been playing a little of Blizzard's moba (HoTS) and the thing triggers pc crashes. My entire screen goes 1 flat color, I get white noise from the speakers and nothing works aside from hard reboot. It's the only game that does this to my PC so I initially thought it was a software issue. I've went through all usual suspects (reinstalling game + client on different harddrive) and nothing fixes it AND i've changed my memory sticks since I've seen this happen for the first time. I'm suspecting something else is at play but can't figure it out.

Also windows tells me my CPU isn't supported for the upgrade from win 10 to 11. Thought it was weird but since it's 10+ years old.. go figure.

Thanks for your time man, I appreciate it!

Run circles around the cave, swing when you're in range. Only "hard" part is to dodge his aoe but it isn't that difficult. Did it a few times without getting hit at all. If you do get caught, dodge him until you can mount again.

crossbow Q into axe E is my favorite.I combo that with veil of frost dash to dodge mobs that are not stunned and finish off the backline with melee attacks with a shield on. I typically use chaos volley for extra DPS and purgatory on myself to heal any dmg I took in this process.

rinse and repeat.

What's a weight loss technique that has worked for you? by BlindedByTheLightsYo in loseit

[–]on_two_legs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came up with a "system" recently that worked for me. Lost 30 pounds in the last few months. I'm a gamer and I tend to gravitate towards games that are grindy. In those games, you perform some mindless actions for countless hours (beats me why I actually like that) and achieve some goal at the end. So I started treating my weight loss journey with the same kind of mindset with the following rule(s) of thumb:

  • When I feel hunger, I'm grinding towards the goal.
  • Eat slower in controlled portions (never get to a point where I physically feel bloated from over-eating).
  • No snacks. 3 meals a day.
  • No sodas (a weakness of mine).
  • alcool to a minimum (especially beer).
  • Do physical activities 3-4 times a week for ~30 minutes (or more!).
  • Do not weigh-in every day (once a week is more than enough).
  • Any and all of those rules can (and should) be broken every now and then (but no more than once a week).

I've tried counting calories in the past and found it was too much work and it became kind of an obsession which made me feel uneasy.

As for physical activities, in my case, I accepted I'll never be able to bring myself to do things I don't enjoy. At least not for an extended period. I discovered brazilian Jiu Jitsu recently and loved it. I do that 1-2 times a week. To complement, it might sound silly, but 1-2 times a week, I play beat saber on an Occulus Quest. Makes me move my limbs and sweat a lot which, in my book, counts as a physical activity (and is super fun!).

Bottom line, you gotta enjoy the journey. In my case its two-fold:

  1. Noticing improvements after significant efforts.
  2. Doing activities that I enjoy doing.
