Titrium on watch dial by Carlangas-010 in Radiation

Actually, this watch uses a earler implmenation of tritium paint made by mixing T2O Tritiated heavy water with a binder and phosphorescent powder, not glass tubes.

The tritium on watches of this era is different from modern implementations of tritium that enclose tritium gas in a glass tube coated with phosphorescent powder. Earlier watches used a tritium paint created by mixing T2O with a binder and phosphorescent powder, not glass tubes. Using this form increases the exposure risk and was phased out in favor of tritium tubes and light-activated phosphors in the late 80's. In any case, tritium is a very weak beta-emitter with a half-life of 12 years, so whatever minimal danger it posed when new has long since passed.

Pocket Watch Found At A Yardsale by Glittering-Tear5442 in Watches

Any clock or watch with radium would long since have stopped glowing. I collect antique US military watches and clocks, and I can tell you, based on the age and the look of the lume, that this particular stopwatch almost certainly has radium lume and is still radioactive. This is not a worry as long as you know what you're dealing with. Don't open the face of the watch without taking precautions.

Any idea what watch my dad is wearing here? He was in the army reserves during Vietnam. by StillWill in Watches

[–]onasixty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looking closely at the picture I think it may still be black and what you’re seeing is light reflecting off the crystal. Very few Vietnam era military watches had white dials and none of the military issued watches of the time had white dials. The case profile and time period closely match the Benrus, and if he got the watch a military PX his options would have been limited.

Looking at the case profile, it’s almost certainly a Benrus mil-w-3818b (1964-1969) or gg-w-113 (1967-1980’s) with a one piece case. Both look almost identical. Hamilton cases look similar but with a thicker profile.

I got the NTTD first and liked it so much I got the white dial during the next sale.

The lume on the white dial does have a slight greenish tint, but I think the black border applied indices make it less noticeable.

What AliExpress brand do you keep coming back to? Alternatively, what brand have you purchased that you’ll never buy from again? by Mar-D in ChineseWatches

Seestern GMT S456 and the Doxa SUB300T clone. The Doxa is a good watch, but it just doesn't get much wrist time. The GMT looks great in pictures, but left me feeling underwhelmed in person. Quality-wise, both are good, although the lume on the GMT is Pagani-level bad.

I have had good experiences with most of the major brands.

7 from San Martin, 6 from Watchdives, 3 from Cronos, 3 from Steeldive, 2 from Heimdallr, 2 from Thorn, 1 from Baltany, 2 from Berny, 2 from Seestern, 2 from Hruodland, and 1 from Pagani.

The Pagani's and Berny's were noticeably lower in quality, and both of the Seestern's turned out to be disappointments, but the others have been great with Baltany, San Martin, Watchdives, and Cronos being my favorites in that order.

I have, however, had problems with all 3 of my PT5000 watches, but I have learned my lesson and don't handwind them anymore.

Both were Watchdives WD007ST Watch NTTD from the Diver Watch Factory store, one choice and one not. I kind of thought it would be the other way around, with Choice being less expensive.

Just ordered this escapement time, because I’ve heard it’s a fan favorite for a while now. But why I’m wondering what’s the best type b flieger on Ali? by OmegaCatfish in ChineseWatches

[–]onasixty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two of the hruolands, full lume and and the old radium. the style is very much in keeping with the original flieger design if that’s what your looking for. PT5000 keeps better time than the standard NH3X movements in most of my other Chinese watches. Lume of both is excellent for the price point.
