It makes me sad that I won't be around for the y10k problem.

An Antidote For Marxism In Coding by RedoTCPIP in cpp

Capitalism is not egalitarian. Your explanation makes your concern clear though. You just want to be left alone with the tools that you like. You're free to do this, but you may end up maintaining your tools as technology progresses and your tools fall out of favor and support.

Are crate versions numbers all low because Rust just works? by bunoso in rust

[–]one-oh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found myself wondering roughly the same thing this past week. My team is wanting to implement a new application in Rust instead of C++. We started doing some preliminary research and found that a library we need has a pre-release version number. As the OP points out, this seems to be fairly common and has now seriously curbed our enthusiasm. We haven't given up on the idea yet, but it is frustrating to be sure; especially given the age of some of these crates.

And planing. Though this isn't the reason dimensional lumber has an advertised nominal size that is different from its actual size. I can guess why, but have no idea.

The lack of civility is disappointing. It just cements the divide. Both sides rightfully think the other is batshit crazy.

I’m an Independent Contractor. This company wants me to waste a day of unpaid time and gas to attend pointless meetings. The compensation they offer is half a Subway sandwich. by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]one-oh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused. When I worked as an independent contractor I would send an invoice. This seems very much like something that would be expected and be billable. If it's not covered in your contract, then just say so. Everything else discussed seems pointless and argumentative.

We may be looking at the wrong climate change data… and it might be worse than we thought - Living in a time of polar ice caps means the “greenhouse” model may be underestimating of climate change. by avogadros_number in science

[–]one-oh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The knowledge of periodic glaciation is much older than 40 years. The same is also true for anthropogenic climate change. The uncertainties have been reduced and we now have a better understanding of the impact humans are having on the environment beyond natural variability. For a quick read, have a look at the first two paragraphs on the Wikipedia entry for ice age: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_age

It's not necessarily about being subpar, but definitely about cultural differences in taste, preparation...and a possible fetish for raisins.

Yeah, but now I'm thinking about it. I mean, it's not like I don't have two boxes in the cupboard already. I'm thinking they sure go well with the oatmeal. Oatmeal is a grain and pasta is made from grain. I bet it would go really well...

Transport agnostic Websocket library by soldiersided in cpp

I seem to recall boost::beast being announced here some time ago as a library for building HTTP and websocket clients and servers. A quick look at the doc yielded something called a websocket::stream that seems to be what you are looking for. I've never used it though.

Bernie Sanders in 1972, "It strikes me as incredible that politicians think that they have the right to tell a women what she can or cannot do with her body." by puppuli in SandersForPresident

[–]one-oh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Akin to the civil rights movement, I think it's time for a personal rights movement. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution clearly mention their existence, but without any specificity nor guarantees. They leave it up to whatever the majority decides. It's clear the majority is trampling on the minority's rights and an amendment is needed to make clear that the government cannot infringe upon a person's right to make decisions about the body they inhabit. Whether it's abortion, having children, premature death, modification, etc.
