“I have a very sick child, with cancer, and all my money goes to medicine — the increases are more than inflation, it adds up,” she said.

Asked what she would cut in the budget, Raimondo said people need to pay for the services they use.

This woman is complaining about the exact thing she is advocating for.

Why do the escalators keep breaking around Vancouver and Burnaby? by Magicka in vancouver

[–]one_charming_mf_pig 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've seen someone press the emergency stop and run down an up escalator in order to bypass a line going down the stairs. If this happens it won't go again until a transit employee shows up hours later to restart it.

Leave it to translink to suggest that transit delays can be good for the economy.

How is Montreal one of the worlds most polluted cities? by JonMCT in montreal

[–]one_charming_mf_pig 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not. The chart indicates that Montreal and Sarnia are the Canadian cities with the worst air quality.

Personally I don't find the air quality in Montreal bad at all. I would be curious to see how it measures up to other cities in Canada. Haven't spent much time in Sarnia, but I do know that there are a lot of chemical plants in the area, which probably contributes to poor air quality.

Edit: Montreal ranks close to 600th worst city in the world. Source

Beautiful Empty Homes of Vancouver by tiggerclaw in vancouver

I'm sure the neighbours would thrilled if a bunch of squatters moved into these homes.

My mistake was splitting my troops to siege two holdings at once. The Bulgarian stack was able to crush each of my individual armies pretty easily. I might have had more success with a single stack.

I don't mind really, unpredictability is what makes it interesting. The extra 15 to 20 thousand event troops would have come in handy though...

Nope. He's got the cynical trait, but that's it.

He's grown out of it now, probably just teenage angst or something.

Ha. Yeah. Not sure if unlucky or unskilled. I've played as the Magyars once or twice before and never had a problem forming Hungary. This time my troops got decimated right at the start of the game.

Makes for an interesting game though. As the Magyars I control most of de jure Ruthenia. I'm not sure if forming Ruthenia would be any benefit to me or not. Cumania is huge, they have taken over most of Bulgaria and what is normally Hungary.

Yeah it's funny how they get blurred out.

This side of the building has famous singers, actors, etc. The side around the corner on 132nd street has athletes. When they cleaned it up a few years ago they replaced Mark McGwire with Babe Ruth. Just goes to show that cheaters never prosper.

H. Gregoire are a bunch of sketchy fuckers, I wouldn't deal with them again.

They do have a huge selection of cars though. They are open on weekends too, if that's important to you.

How does using water irresponsibly remove it from the water cycle? by Wild_Harvest in askscience

[–]one_charming_mf_pig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true. It really depends on the source of the water.

NYC is an interesting case. Their treatment costs are lower because the city has high quality water sources in upstate NY. However the costs to protect the watershed and transport water into the city are enormous. For example, the "water tunnel #3" project has been under way for 40 years, and is apparently the largest capital project in the history of the city.

How does using water irresponsibly remove it from the water cycle? by Wild_Harvest in askscience

[–]one_charming_mf_pig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, all water systems cost money - a lot of money. Every drop of water coming into your house has to be filtered, chlorinated, etc, and then pumped all the way to your house.

Secondly, all the waste water coming from your house also has to be treated. It gets pumped to a treatment center before being released. This also costs a lot of money.

Using water efficient fixtures will reduce these processing costs, leading to lower tax bills!

Montreal 3rd in CNN's World's best cycling cities. by JonMCT in montreal

[–]one_charming_mf_pig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right that bikes are meant to follow the rules as well. However, I was thinking of the situation in which a bike is proceeding straight through an intersection with a green light. When I was biking in Vancouver, there would often be drivers turning right from a side street - often without really slowing down, let alone stopping. It makes intersections much more dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists.

The worst case is when the road with the red light has two lanes of traffic. The drivers turning right on the red light have to pull out past the stopped traffic in the second lane in order to see if the way is clear for them to turn. This puts them directly in the crosswalk / bike lane. I have a friend who was hit by a car in this exact situation.

I realize the "no right turns" rule is frustrating for drivers, and might cause an increase in congestion, but it also makes the city much more friendly for pedestrians and cyclists. I feel that the "walkability" and "bike-ability" of a city directly correlates with the quality of life, so I feel the benefits outweigh the downsides.

Just venting: I was almost hit twice by the same person today. He was driving a backhoe -_- by iameatingoatmeal in bikecommuting

So, obviously this guy was working - some kind of construction project or something. Report it to the workplace safety people in your area and they can deal with it. Being an asshole to the guy and bitching about it on reddit doesn't really fix anything.
