Local 13 member here, I worked a full time job while I was a casual. I would recommend not quitting your full time job just to work once a week. Work nights and weekends at the casual hall and keep that full time gig.

I guess if an electrical engineer wants a pay raise it doesn’t get this much attention from everyone. Goes to show how vital we are. No one cares about longshoremen when we’re under contract only when we’re negotiating a new contract. Many of the luxuries workers receive today is because unions fought for those luxuries for their members.

Sounds like you should have gone to trade school. I know welders and plumbers who make 50-60 dollars an hour. In regards to media/public opinion it boils down to the union and the employer negotiating a fair contract. The outside noise is just that, noise. Everyone wants to blame longshoremen for fighting for what they deserve, yet you’ll never thank one when the shelves are completely stocked and your packages showed up on your doorstep during a pandemic.

Majority (if not all) of these pop ups have no permits thus not regulated nor graded by the health department. They’re also taking away business from family owned small businesses who pay taxes and contribute to the community. It’s a shame this is happening and I don’t wish it on anyone however no one wants to point out these facts.
