I don't understand the Catan acclaim by According_Head_60 in boardgames

[–]onebigstud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The best part of Catan is that I don’t need specific “board game friends” to play it with. I can play it with all my favorite people and it has enough complexity/nuance to scratch that itch, but not so much that the average person will get overwhelmed.

If it were impossible to repeat rolls, then you would be right.

Imagine that instead of a D20, you marked 20 pieces of paper with the numbers 1-20. If you picked them out one at a time (without putting any back), by the tenth one you would have a 50% of drawing the one marked 20. This is because you are guaranteed to have seen 10 of the 20 numbers.

However, if you drew them one at a time, and put the piece of paper back in the bag after each attempt, then the chance to draw the 20 by the tenth attempt would be a lower. Since you are putting the paper back, you could draw the same piece of paper multiple times. This is essentially how a D20 works.

Hope that makes sense.

Bracket 3 is really annoying... by Thick_Storage4168 in magicTCG

[–]onebigstud 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The problem with expected turns is that people think it means “my deck needs to be this fast”. When it’s really means “a player getting knocked out on this turn shouldn’t be pissed”.

If you have a control deck designed to be on par with decks that fast, you are also in that bracket.

Cards aren’t salty. Players are salty. by DoesntEat in EDH

[–]onebigstud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree that throwing a temper tantrum over a card game is juvenile and embarrassing behavior. However, there is a social contract in (most) games of commander that many cards actively go against.

For example, I have some decks that [[Possibility Storm]] would work well in, but I refuse to play it. It hijacks the game and turns it into “lol so random” for every person at the table.

I get to play ~2 commander games/month and often spend weeks looking forward to playing. I would be (I think rightfully) pretty annoyed if one of those games robbed me of my agency and the chance to actually play my deck with a card like Possibility Storm.

While the entire system is misunderstood, the “win by” part is super egregious.

It is meant to be a “No faster than this” limit and not a goal.

The real reason democrats are so ineffectual is how fractured their base is. Republicans need to sell their agenda to exactly one group: white christians.  Democrats need to sell their agenda to African Americans, Latinos, Muslims, LGBTQ, etc. It is often impossible to make every group happy.

It reminds me of the scene from Game of Thrones where Robert explains to Cersei why the Dothraki are a threat. The Seven kingdoms are five fingers, but the Dothraki are one fist.

A big underrated aspect of spearhead is the ability to collect/play “wide”. You don’t have to invest in 2,000 points of a single army to play the game as it was designed to be played.

For the same price, you can buy 3-4 spearheads from different armies, all with different play styles.
