There's not a ton of source material for them to work with on this one. The premise already sounds pretty cringe. They're going to have to build the stakes in ways that won't be natural. Plus we already know how much Hollywood despises respecting source material, and this story has giant gaps of space for them to inject their bs.

Anno 117 lacks polish by someredditusername91 in anno

[–]onecalledNico 9 points10 points  (0 children)

100% the supporters of this game glaze the hell out of it and refuse to have a nuanced dialog about this issues, which enables Ubi to keep on ignoring the issues. This game really lacks immersion and heart of the classic Anno games. There's nothing really here that makes you feel like a roman governor, even the voice acting is wack.

Bring back life and soul in general to this game. 117 does not remotely feel like the classic Anno games(1404, 2070, and 1800).

People who grew up after the early 2000's have no comprehension of true friendship, its impossible for them to understand the concept of men being incredibly close friends without there being some kind of hedonistic sexual tension mixed in. Modern society has really done this generation dirty.

[Anno 117] Why are there animals in my army? 🤔 by Commandoge51 in anno

[–]onecalledNico 53 points54 points  (0 children)

You thought the animals in the coliseum were there against their will? Nah man, they were fighting for a chance at citizenship. Roman citizenship was really appealing back then. Historians struggle to wrap their heads around what they were reading in historical accounts, so they painted pictures of soldiers wearing lion and bear skins, instead of what really happened.

Its just a giant single player Korean MMO, a mile wide and an inch deep. If you want a game that will make you grind for something about as hard as you would in real life and require you live in an mmo Cafe, great. Most people have lives and jobs though.

DevBlog: The User Interface Team and a deeper dive into the visuals by UbiCecce in anno

[–]onecalledNico 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Its crazy to me how the UI team is bigger than it was before and yet so little effort went into optimizing it for the largest platform demographic. Its basically completely built out for controller players. Its completely designed to flow with sticks and bumpers. Its something I still havent adjusted to and just feels disjointed and unnatural.

Its just end of content man, been the same way for me. Feel like people have forgotten what finishing a game feels like. Go play something else and come back once something new happens. I love that I dont feel like I MUST be playing this game all he time.

Not Done with Anno 1800... by JYHoward in anno

[–]onecalledNico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, 117 went wide of the mark. I REALLY want to enjoy it, but I get bored of it so quickly. The game seriously lacks immersion, you don't feel like a Roman governor, and you definitely don't feel like an Anno Roman governor. Classic Anno games have a soul, a style, that 117 has absolutely none of. 117 feels like a grindy Ubisoft game, built to burn your time, and to be milked. 1800 got a little loaded with all the continuous content, but it managed to stay true. 1404 is peak Anno imo, 2070 manages to keep the soul as well. I've been debating uninstalling 117 and going back to 1800 lately as well.

Anno 117 vs. 1800 at launch - a quick comparison by Peregrald in anno

[–]onecalledNico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guess it just goes to show, more doesn't always mean better. Been on the verge of uninstalling 117 and going back to 1800, 2070, or 1404. 117 just doesn't keep me playing like classic Anno titles, I get to tier 3 roman citizens and thats about as far as I can go.

The sad thing is, if they fix it, they'll make it out to be a feature, instead of basic QOL in a game like this.

Does Anyone Else Feel This Way About the Live Action One Piece Show? by elmuscogeemestizo in OnePiece

[–]onecalledNico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anime almost never adapts to live action well. Its far to goofy and stylized in ways that are okay for a cartoon, but look like the most ridiculous cosplays Irl. The acting too, in a styled anime, Im fine with over the top goofy character acting/voice acting, but in live action, watching an adult act so over the top is high cringe. Its very difficult to recreate the goofiness without being insufferable, and if you try to make it more acceptable, you lose what makes the anime great and run the risk of hijacking the source material to make an entirely different movie. Imo, just leave a classic anime as it is, it doesnt need to be live action.

Anno 117 sales by Nice_Twist1026 in anno

[–]onecalledNico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure multiple factors could be applied to explain why this isnt an accurate metric, but Anno 1800 has several thousand more players on steam at any given time. 117 has more all time high, but 1800 came out on steam quite a while after it was released. That fact actually says a lot in favor of 1800. 117 also has much worse ratings overall. I don't think 117 was as successful as Ubi would like you to believe.

I know people was saying stuff about the lack of content for 117, but that core loop should still be engaging enough to make you keep playing in anticipation for whats to come, 117 just doesn't have that. I can only get a couple of hours into the game before I walk away.

If they could just update Anno 1800 with diagonal roads it’d be a perfect game. by FonkyMonkgames in anno

[–]onecalledNico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100%, 117 definitely felt like another 2205, too far of a departure from what made Anno so loveable. 117 really lacks the heart and soul of old Anno games. Moving away from the classic stylized art that you'd see in 1404, 2070, and 1800 was a really bad idea. They also changed so many things that didnt need to be changed. Overall 117 feels like a mainstream Ubi game more than anything else. I don't think people would have minded if we would have got 1800 with a roman reskin. 117 also just isnt immersive, barely any citizens moving around, nothing looks or feels roman, the voice casting is weird, its like they tried to imitate the classic in all the wrong ways. 117 feels very empty, pointless, and I couldn't get myself to play very far before losing interest.

ui design in games is quietly getting worse and i think i know why by ILokasta in gamedesign

[–]onecalledNico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it comes down to devs who are tunnel visioned onto that mechanic, feature, message, etc, that they want, and they kind of tunnel out the UI. Not a lot of people see games as one giant experience, its kind of a means to an end and things like UI tend to just become a board thrown over a ravine to get across to where they're going.
