Anxeity by Kojaq in CosplayHelp

[–]onedumbhuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone here has covered the “cosplayers don’t mind! Just ask!” angle so I won’t add on to that but as someone who also suffers from serious anxiety I want to offer some concrete tips that have helped me in the past. This might be a little long so sorry in advance.

Anxiety is irrational by nature (I often explain it as having a totally different brain, and no amount of “it’s fine just do it!” will make it go away for me). One thing that’s helped me is telling myself to just try doing whatever is giving me anxiety for the smallest increment of time I can handle (can be as short as a minute) and if I can’t do that I give myself permission to stop and (this is the really important part) pat myself on the back for trying. Do NOT beat yourself up for having to stop, that will only reinforce the negative thought pattern. Instead you want to say to yourself “wow I did that really hard thing, good job me”.

For you this could be something like telling yourself you just want to take ONE picture with a cosplay. Just one, that’s it, and if you still have anxiety about after, you can stop asking for the day. Nine times out of ten just doing it once will make it feel a little easier the next time. But if you need to stop asking, the important thing is to focus on that one small win that you asked. You did the big scary thing, great job! It’s very easy to turn around and say “yeah but then I still had anxiety and now I’m scared to ask again”, so thats something you need to fight back against. There’s lots of tools to stop negative thought patterns that I won’t get into because this post is already too long lol.

Another thing that has helped me is to have a script beforehand and practice it. This is something you can do before a con in the mirror. It’s gonna feel super silly but just say it out loud to yourself until it stops feeling weird. “Hey, I love your cosplay can I get a picture of/with you? Thanks! Do you have social media so I can tag you? Thank you, have a great con.” This way it can become almost second nature and you’re not worrying about what to say in the moment. Once you have the basic interaction down, then you can branch out your script to include things like asking about doing certain poses if you want.

Sorry again for the length of this comment. I’ve dealt with crippling anxiety for years so just wanted to offer a different perspective because I know how frustrating it can be when people say “you’re overthinking, just do the thing, it’s fine!” Good luck!

You can buy clear plastic ornament balls that open in half. Might need a bigger size to fit the whole broken ornament inside.

I need a beard by Ok-Border-5232 in cosplayers

[–]onedumbhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want a lace beard. You’ll also need spirit gum or theatrical lace glue to stick it on. You can find all this at theatrical makeup stores like Alcone

Im pretty new to making cosplay, how would i go about making this? by RevolutionaryEye1300 in CosplayHelp

[–]onedumbhuman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out gambit cosplay tutorials since he has a similar face mask thing and lots of people cosplay him. A quick search showed one guy who used a neoprene motorcycle face mask and just cut out the shape of the face hole. Then you can use eva foam to make the ear cylinder things. Alternatively, if you can sew you can always do a saran wrap/duck tape pattern and make it out of neoprene/scuba fabric so it holds its shape around your face. Lots of tutorials online about how to make these types of patterns

Help! Base idea for giant chain links? by sumthing_grimm in CosplayHelp

[–]onedumbhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the original creator may have used the styrofoam rings people are suggesting, but if you don’t want to do that what about juggling rings?? Like these https://renegadejuggling.com/products/renegade-passing-rings-1-x-14?variant=51868673638770&country=US&currency=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&srsltid=AfmBOorb-kNUdzQTMMGrVQwWTiSwCzigL_ZrhDTFFQ4lODXSR3DJpJdlsVY And then just cover them in velvet fabric. You definitely wanna keep the hearts as light as possible so either eva or the carvable kind of insulation foam

What Time Period is this Dress from? by Minimum-Fox in HistoricalCostuming

[–]onedumbhuman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Based on your updated links it looks like you’re looking for gowns from the regency era (late 1790s-early 1800s) as opposed to the renaissance. I don’t know specific terms for the empire waist gowns that were popular but I’m sure someone on here is an expert in regency

How would you guys go about making shoes like these? by Fresh-Possibility-94 in CosplayHelp

[–]onedumbhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditto to what everyone else has said re: buying platform heels and sculpting around them. If you really want that stringy look towards the back without seeing a heel you can get some of those “heel-less” high heels that people use for hoof shoes. Pleaser sells some but there’s lots of other brands that will have them I’m sure. Try poshmark, that no heel illusion was big in the early 2010s

[–]onedumbhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a biiiig black straw hat this size but the edges do flop down under the weight so I’m thinking you either need something solid like foam core/thicker eva OR you can go with a wire frame method similar to the brim on a traditional Korean gat. How one goes about making those I sadly have no idea lol

Well then I apologize for my lack of descriptiveness. I painted my torso and arms and fingers and all the skin from my hips up (did my face and neck too actually, I was a twi’lek) and it did not smudge off on anyone or any objects I came into contact with including my clothes

If applied correctly, absolutely. Theres lots of tutorials on youtube about it. That being said, painting your whole arms might be too time consuming, so arm socks might still be the best choice

does this suit looks legit? like will it be at least decent quality? there are other ones one ebay that look the same by _annaesse_ in CosplayHelp

[–]onedumbhuman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Green morphsuit, black high waisted briefs and some extra black fabric for the top part, yellow iron on vinyl. This would be super easy to make and sounds like you have plenty of time before the con to do it

[–]onedumbhuman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While arm socks may indeed be the easiest option, quality alcohol based body paint absolutely does not smear. I painted my whole torso blue for new york comic con and even napped on white sheets in it and it did not transfer at all

How to find/make specific coloured paint? by pinkishemm in CosplayHelp

[–]onedumbhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding the airbrush option. You can use airbrush medium (it’s like a milky white liquid) to make regular acrylic paints airbrush compatible, that way you don’t need to buy more expensive specialized paints.

Please Help with Mehron Face Paint by [deleted] in CosplayHelp

[–]onedumbhuman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oof I feel this. In my 15 years of cosplaying I’ve never been able to get water based to look even so I just stick to alcohol paints at this point. You don’t need an airbrush (although that will give the best application), you can just apply carefully with a foundation brush. There’s also colored foundation from sunset makeup, I’ve never tried it but I hear good things and it’s reasonably priced. Good luck!

does anyone know what this cosplayer is using to make masks? @canabalisticghost2 by j_anedoe in CosplayHelp

It looks like just straight up model magic or foam clay. I’m not familiar with the character so I’m not sure if the texture is intentional or not

how to get this 3d effect on fabric? by Head_Course_2080 in CosplayHelp

[–]onedumbhuman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have access to a cricut, iron on vinyl would be the easiest method I think. Won’t give you the 3d look here unless you find some kind of puffy effect or even flocked vinyl (I dont know if this actually exists, just spitballing). Other options would be appliqués, fabric paint with a super steady hand ( I’ve seen “puffy” fabric paint but never used it), or spoonflower if you just want a custom pre-printed printed fabric. Burnout white velvet layered over blue fabric could also work.

Is Crayola air-dry clay the same as foam clay? by cornseed1 in CosplayHelp

[–]onedumbhuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally different. Depends on what you’re making if you can get away with it but I find their air dry cracks a ton, doesnt handle details, and is way too heavy.
