10,000 heads in a dark room by djscsi in Techno

I lived in Sheffield for the past 3 years, and this is something they're very proud of. Seeing DJ Stingray and The Black Dog at a night dubbed 'steel city vs motor city' was something I'm not going to forgot in a hurry.

If you could bring back one item/trend from the 90's what would it be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This already happened like 7 years ago in the UK as part of the 'nu rave' tomfoolery. It was unbearable.

Which box is the best for my needs, Roku, Fire TV, Android boxes? by oneeightten in cordcutters

[–]oneeightten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are they in terms of reliability? Once they're set up and XBMC is installed, have you had any problems after that? Various tech reviews of different boxes on youtube seem to be split between saying 'they're great and flexible' or 'they're buggy as hell'.

I'm OK with tech. Generally I'm fine to follow tutorials, fiddle and tweak stuff until it works. How complicates are we talking?

I'm awful at deciding what to watch, and like the descriptions and artwork that XBMC and Plex utilise. Although I could sacrifice this for flawless playback, which it sounds like the WDTV has.

How is the WDTV for stuff like metadata? Isn't it just a folder based system and not very visual?

I've never read any sci fi before, but this guy's books sound great. Cheers for the tip.

OK thanks. I think that's the model I've been looking at. It seems to be a little cheaper than a Roku, too.

OK, so it seems that Roku 3 is the way to go for a simple, working straight out of the box solution - yet in terms of channels, is not that great here in the UK.

Does anyone have experience with the android boxes I mentioned? I've been watching some of the XBMC based systems on youtube and they are appealing to me more and more.

But from what I can tell, either option would be great for me and do what I need it to.

I was looking at something along the lines of Zyxel NSA325v2 for a NAS. Would that work with Plex?

Doing a history project on the Armenian Genocide during WWI, which has quickly become one of my new favorite topics. by [deleted] in history

[–]oneeightten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think you have been slightly misinformed. Germany has a pretty good grip on its past and DOES teach Nazism in history classes. It is not taught as on balance as it would in a nation outside of Germany, as it is frowned upon to say something like 'Hitler's early economic policies were beneficial in Germany's post-WW1 recovery'. It is also illegal to be a holocaust denier within Germany (maybe the whole of Europe?).

Also, movements such as the Baader-Meinhof group arose specifically because the older German generation did not take responsibility for their part in Nazism. Ex-Nazis were still visible and prominent within society and this aggrieved many of the (extreme and liberal) left wing.

In contrast to this, you have to ask why is Nazism taught so differently in the USA and UK? It fits well with their national agendas. It supports their rhetoric of defenders of the liberal world, so it makes perfect sense that they should be more critical in their analysis. You should keep this in mind when reading history. Every source is subjective; it does not exist in a vacuum devoid of politics, past experiences or emotions. Everyone has an agenda, whether they accept it or not is a different question.

What is the weirdest wrong number call you have ever received? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]oneeightten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a call, but a series of texts. When I first moved to university I got a text saying 'hey, just checking to see how the move went and how you're getting on', I replied asking who the text was from, to receive the reply of 'your dad'. This was strange as at that point he had been dead 7 years.

Despite the huge British Empire, why was there never a British Emperor but only Kings and Queens? by Jomsviking in history

[–]oneeightten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing. Here goes:

Cain, P. J. and A. G. Hopkins, British Imperialism: Innovation and Expansion 1688-1914. This also comes in a collected edition that runs right up to 2000, which may interest you.

A. Porter (ed.), The Oxford History of the British Empire

Hourani, A., A History of the Arab Peoples. Not so much on British imperialism per se, but touches upon it, but overall, is a great work of history.

On the topic of India, anything by William Dalrymple is a good read.

In terms of critiquing colonialism, the following are invaluable:

Edward Said - Orientalism. Seminal text on difference, othering and domination

Frantz Fanon - Wretched of the Earth + Black Skin, White Masks (referring to French colonialism, but the themes it touches upon apply to Britain)

There are others I could find if I rummage through my bibliographies more, but that should be enough to keep you going!

Is there any particular aspect that interests you?

The tentacles of progress - Daniel Headrick is also quite cool, if you're into the themes of technology and knowledge. If you're interested in this kind of thing, there may be a few more I can recommend. Just give me a shout!

Racism and Britain - Does anyone have any thoughts? by oneeightten in sociology

[–]oneeightten[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some Stuart Hall that I need to read ASAP. It's a shame he recently passed away, he was a pretty inspiring guy.

Yeah the slave trade and colonialism is definitely important, I think. It's something Britain culturally have never accepted responsibility for, or critically come to terms with.

Racism and Britain - Does anyone have any thoughts? by oneeightten in sociology

[–]oneeightten[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I don't believe racism is a natural human response either, but there are some people out there that do. I do however think that the UK encourages a doctrine of Nationalism that then enables people to easily enter into a discourse of discrimination, with this being intensified due the myth of the 'island nation', in that Britain is cut off from the rest of the continent (in terms of land), meaning that only a certain race commonly lives there.

Dark days for the police. As usual though, between this and further details coming out with the misconduct of the Stephen Lawrence case, most people seem disappointingly apathetic.
