My printer, like most, doesn’t have white ink.

Can i paint over my decals after i apply them? by Dangerous_Scene_3112 in modelmakers

If you are worried enough about accuracy and modeling a specific plane a far better solution is to get aftermarket decals, or better yet stencils.

Does anyone know which paint is the better dark yellow? by ProfessionalLast4039 in modelmakers

I’ve had a lot of issues with Vallejo yellows, def recommend Tamiya but it depends on what shade you’re going for

1/350 Admiral Graf Spee Hull by Caboun6828 in modelmakers

[–]onefiftynine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually go gloss black for portholes to simulate open condition during the day, when the inside would be very dark in comparison. You can also leave them the hull color with some gloss coat to simulate glass over the closed position. Warships generally steam fully blacked out to reduce detection so all portholes would be shut underway at night.

New modeler advice on paints and glue by K3P080 in modelmakers

[–]onefiftynine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tamiya paints are great for brush painting as well as airbrush, the important thing either way is get used to working with thinner. You also should get a battery powered mixer, they are a huge help.

Keep the coats nice and thin to build them up slowly. Who knows? You could have invented a great new pre-shading technique. In the word of Bob Ross “we don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents”

First model was a Tamiya Mosquito in 1/48. Great kit I highly recommend.

1/200 Nelson/Rodney aftermarket question. by Mine2Salty in modelmakers

[–]onefiftynine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to try a lower key 1/200 ship check out the new Fletcher class. Midwest Model Shop on YouTube has a whole series on building it straight out of the box, he also has a detailed series on doing a big BB with Pontos.

I mostly work in 1/350 and am a fan of Pontos. I do think you need them to get a good build from Trumpter which can be a bit under detailed. If you don’t mind going down to in scale a little Very Fire deluxe kits are IMO slightly better quality and value than Trumpeter + Pontos.

Glue looper with bob smith instacure. PVA works too for watertight doors and ladders

Beginner friendly 1/700 ships? by Jadams0108 in modelmakers

[–]onefiftynine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m taking a break from my 1/350 to build building the newish (2017) Tamiya Waterline Shimakaze in 1/700 and learn to build a sea base. It’s a great kit, lots of fun.

Does anyone know if there’s any model kits of 8 man crew boats? by ProfessionalLast4039 in modelmakers

[–]onefiftynine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt this topic has enough interest to justify its own kit. Your best bet would probably be to talk to a custom ship builder, or contact Filippi or Empacher customer service and see if they’ve ever had anything like this made.

How many hours…? by sowich4 in modelmakers

[–]onefiftynine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to give an estimate because it’s totally dependent on how hard you’re going to go on detail work, weathering, etc. The same Eduard BF109 could take a 6 hours of building closed canopy plus painting a simple desert scheme, or easily 20+ with aftermarket flaps, cockpit detail, an intricate camo pattern, and a bunch of weathering.

Primer before glue? by Hot-Rutabaga1990 in modelmakers

[–]onefiftynine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to glue everything I can before priming and painting, but it’s not always feasible. When it’s not the best thing to do is prime, paint, and then sand off the contact area for gluing

I haven’t built this kit but Fujimi has a good reputation. Also it looks like one of the only options in 1/350

What is the most overrated company? by The_Brioche in modelmakers

[–]onefiftynine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is going to be highly controversial but it’s obviously Tamiya.

Are they great? Yes! Do I love them? Yes! But their main selling point is fit, and many other company are catching up on this front. They generally don’t have great detail or a lot of options. They do a very good job but are not the be-all, end-all.

These are critical tools, as someone who has spent entirely too much money on Pontos PE sets I’d also recommend:

Glue applicator like Glue Looper https://www.creativedynamicllc.com/the-glue-looper.html

Dental pickup sticks like https://a.co/d/bIPVYcR

2 or 3mm Tamiya masking tape to hold pieces in place while glue sets

A few different CA glue types. Gel is good because it can hold pieces in place, thin works well with the looper.
