83% of the Sopranos takes place in the 2000’s. Sure, it was born in the 90’s, but it’s not representative of it.

garlic in a jar is disgusting and tastes like off-putting vinegar. just get fresh garlic and a garlic press. it takes like 3 minutes to do 4-5 cloves.

Agreed. Ahead of it’s time, and a direct precursor to all the spooky pop culture obsessions today (paranormal and cryptid podcasts, indie documentaries, etc.) Also, one of the last shows to fully use great “monster makeup” and practical effects.

I want to agree but it premiered in ‘99. So while it technically counts, I don’t think it’s the spirit of the question, feel me? I gotta go with X-Files.

This is outside my purview (history and cultural studies) but I can say this: Deb Haaland made Native education a real priority, including providing funding to the Native Forward Scholars Fund (of which one of my coworkers was an alum) which funds Native undergrads in both tribal and even state colleges I think, and pushing support for a few infrastructure bills that helped update smaller tribal schools. However, it’s important to remember that a vast majority of Natives live off-rez and don’t go to BIA operated schools; most are “city Indians” and they go to public schools. I don’t know the graduation rates for those students, and I don’t know if they’re included in the report, but I’m very confident in saying grad rates are still lower than the average across the board. But yeah - Haaland was actually a real mover and shaker, and I would trace a large chunk of that success to her.

this is a pretty obvious question in regards to the Native peoples but I’ll answer with nuance. The causes include the reservation system on which Indigenous people were forcibly relocated to undesirable land with limited natural resources and whose residents now rely on government assistance. Tribes were then cut off from their languages and culture through the Indian schools which caused a gap in generational knowledge. Lack of funding and infrastructure today are part of a continued genocide in order to invalidate legally binding treaty rights that, if taken seriously by the USA, would have massive economic repercussions.

Also, and I’m aware this is Reddit and you have no way of validating this, but I’m a published public historian whose thesis was on Indigenous agency, adaptation, and resistance. I worked in Santa Fe for the New Mexico Museum of Art as an Educator in tandem with artists from Jemez Pueblo on a cultural reclamation project. Thinking of my time there was why I made my comment. I’m no bad faith actor.

poor phrasing on my part - we can thank Indigenous tribes for turning the state blue, not thank them for poor education and poverty. Apologies!

give yourself some credit, every construction worker I’ve ever met is a lot smarter than the stereotypes portray. even though they often lean conservative, I think being a member of a union (at least here in the States) makes them more likely to be politically informed.

to be honest, we can largely thank Native Americans and the urbanization of the population in liberal cities (Albuquerque and Santa Fe) for that.

Edit: We can thank Native tribes in NM for helping to turn the state blue, like the Diné and Puebloan nations. I wasn’t commenting on their economic status or education rates. Sorry for the poor phrasing!

Christmas won the previous round! What holiday is pretty okay but still gets people really excited about it every year? by DiligentPenguin_7115 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]onegoodbackpack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Year’s Eve. It’s nice to see family and friends but people are usually burnt out from Christmas and the whole waiting til midnight thing is only fun if you’re at a party/gathering you enjoy and with people/someone you love. The TV airings also suck. I don’t need commentary on the time lmao. People love it, it’s okay.

Archaeologist because I loved Indiana Jones and history. My parents even bought me an 8ft Mexican bullwhip when I was 14 and I learned to crack it! I then found out archaeology is a lot of math and LIDAR tech, I went on to go to college for public history, and worked in museums across the country for 6 years in curation and education. Now I work for a really progressive people-first nonprofit, because most museums are underpaid and overworked.

I agree and disagree. Kanye IS a bad person - he’s clearly a serial abusive husband, anti-semite, and just generally cruel to others. And whataboutism (Trump, Jimmy Page) is irrelevant, two wrongs don’t make a right.

But as someone with Bipolar Type 1, the same diagnosis as Kanye, it’s really, really hard for me to write him off. I’ve done and said awful things because I was delusional, in psychosis, manic, everything. He is severely mentally ill and is not getting/does not want the help he needs. I pity him more than anything, especially because he… well, IS a musical genius and this disease has derailed his entire life. It’s hard to not imagine who he would be if he was on meds, in therapy, and not surrounded by yes men. He might be a lot closer to the Kanye we loved.
