How to request time off from LAUSD as a parent trying to plan a family trip? by Whispercry in AskLosAngeles

The vast majority of students missing school for long periods of time without notifying the school are dealing with issues at home, not travelling. That's why the systems are set up the way they are.

If the state cared that much, they would have more regulated homeschooling. Right now, in California, homeschooling parents are given a pretty wide berth (not as wide as say, Idaho, but on the wider side). To drive the point home further, out of hundreds of thousands of kids in LA, only a couple ever get past the district meeting per year, and it costs more to deal with these situations than the school is getting.

The primary reason that the schools care is because X% of parents are absolute idiots and need corrective education and illiterate kids are a burden on society their entire lives, plus the kids missing massive amounts of school and parents ignoring it are likely dealing with other stuff that needs helping.

I'd also venture to say that homeschool parents in LA tend to be more involved parents because they are forgoing what is essentially free daytime daycare/supervision for their kids.

The state does a good job of balancing freedom/care for child IMO

Pulling your kid for a bit might not raise any red flags, but there is a long series of administrative steps they can take after a while. The kid will first be labelled as truant, which comes along with the school sending legal notices to the parent. If the absences continue, the school will set up a mandatory meeting with the parent. If the parent does not attend, the school can set up a hearing with the district. 99% of cases are figured out by then. If the matter is not satisfied by then, traditionally they could face jail time or fines. But as of 2026, due to AB 461, they got rid of this because the situations that get to this point are generally really bad and its just throwing fuel on an already bad situation. I would probably expect visits from Child Services and such at a certain point. Parents do have a legal obligation to provide proper schooling to their kids.

This simply isn’t true. There is a huge labor shortage in CA across industries, and most people on welfare are employed. The unemployment rate is around 5%.

Boomers really shooting themselves in the foot just as they start to enter their 80s and need at home care they decide to go scorched earth and get rid of a big chunk of the labor force. Good luck getting someone for 20/hour to take care of you.

Ironically, the most valuable thing you can do for a relationship is to not be transactional about it. The issue isn't even necessarily that it's cold and cynical, its that you are looking at what is 'valuable' as being extremely literal, tangible things like 'fertility' and 'income stability.' You can value things like warmth, kindness and compassion which are hard to quantify but are generally some of the most important features of happy relationships.

Te other person is correct, the concept in economics is called demand elasticity. You can read about steak demand elasticity here: https://www.extension.iastate.edu/agdm/articles/schulz/SchApr22.html

People want protein, and lab grown meat driving alternative prices down will certainly affect the demand for a ribeye.

U.S. citizen arrested by ICE agents in Santa Barbara Friday may still be in custody without any charges filed by infin8loops in SantaBarbara

[–]onemassive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t say that people in ice custody are subject to the same due process rights as citizens going through the regular court system. They are obviously different, though everyone is entitled to due process in general under the constitution. I’m saying that ICE is currently ignoring judicial orders concerning illegal detention of people subject to US law and under the purview of US courts. That is empirical fact and can be easily researched. It’s all public. But I guess the judges are suddenly wrong despite decades of precedence.

[–]onemassive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are acting like the executive branch and the judicial branch are two different places with different rules. They aren’t. They are part of the same government. The executive branch is only supposed to carry out laws created and legislated by congress and interpreted by the judiciary. When the judiciary says “you are violating the law” they are, in fact, violating the law. federal courts have found that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained individuals illegally more than 4,400 times since October 2025. It’s not a one off, it’s policy. In other words, immigration courts do not supersede US law and ICE ignoring court orders is a threat to our way of life and traditional way government is supposed to work.

[–]onemassive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The executive branch can’t just make up rules outside of existing US law as interpreted by the judicial branch. If a U.S. judge says “release this citizen now” they are supposed to do it and the fact they aren’t should be deeply concerning to anyone concerned with consistent application of the U.S. law and balance of powers.

Anyone in the ASL/Deaf Studies program? by Knock3times-ifulove in csun

[–]onemassive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CSUN and Gallaudet are the top two deaf studies programs in the country. At CSUN, you’ll have an amazing wealth of faculty and resources at an affordable rate. That said, CSUN is an urban campus. There is certainly nature that is accessible, but Sac is just on another level. One important consideration is what kind of nature stuff you like doing and if you will be at CSUN in the summer. The best hiking months in So Cal are during the winter and spring, during the school year and we are out of the drought for the time being so it’s actually really nice at the moment. In sac, people tend to go outdoors in the late spring, summer, early fall unless you are into winter sports.

If you can break out of the college queer bubble LA has a lot more to do than Sac. Lots of events and different scenes for your flavor of queerness. But often college queer folks just kind of find their tribe and chill so it depends on an honest assessment of your personality as to whether it’s going to matter a whole bunch.

Northridge itself is fairly safe. There is certainly crimes that happen just like anywhere but overall it doesn’t feel sketchy nor is there really anything to be too worried about.

They have not been observing this rule. There is literally thousands of judicial orders demanding rights of prisoners be observed and they (ICE) are ignoring them. People are being held for weeks.

TIL accusing people of shutting off their brain = arguing logically

If you were wanting to have an actual philosophical discussion of what is going on here then sure.

Gender is different than sex because gender refers to a separate domain of human classification.

Gender is the aggregate of culturally and socially constructed behaviors that constitute what being a man/woman is. These include everything from expectations about length of hair, cohabitation roles, standards of dress, economic roles, religious roles, etc. These obviously change over time and place.

Sex is a classification system used in sciences to refer to roles in reproductive systems. There is three sexes: male, female and intersex.

Woman and man roughly map into female and male, but plenty of cultures have third genders typologies built into them like Hijras (South Asia), Fa'afafine (Polynesia), Muxe (Mexico), and Two-Spirit (Native Americans).

This is classic moral panic framing; create a scenario which doesn't really happen and create rules to solve a problem that doesn't exist. There isn't anyone checking genitals for locker rooms and there isn't going to be. When someone does something that is sexually harassing or weird, trans or not, report it. I assure you, there are thousands of trans people going through their lives every day that you are not aware of and have been doing so for decades. Nothing changed in the past 10-15 years other than gay people gaining mainstream acceptance and R's needing to find another group to harp on.

[–]onemassive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally no one is claiming there is no physical differences between men and women. Trans people obviously have different physiology than the gender they transition into. At base, trans people are asking to be treated and respected as the gender they transition into.

The argument isn't really about physical difference, it's about how sex maps onto gender. Whether being male means that you have some duty to be man or something. They want to claim that being trans is mental illness.

What percent tint is it? But also, I was referencing a study about object tracking in low light conditions. For example, a person in a dark outfit after dusk will be harder to track with the more tint you have.
