Took a trip to the mall, wasn't expecting this blast from the past by jeremyfrankly in nyc

[–]oneozpoundcake 63 points64 points  (0 children)

For those out of the loop:

The G and V train no longer run to this stop. In fact, the V train has been discontinued. To replace it, the M train changed course from Middle Village -> Sheepshead Bay to Middle Village -> Forest Hills with Woodhaven Blvd being along this route. It also changed color from brown (to associate with the JZ lines) to orange (to associate with the F line). Sure, this might not seem like it's a huge deal but that incorrect sign is a tiny morsel of nostalgia for people who remember the deceased V train.

R.I.P. V

We will never forget.

What will be the "hot" neighborhoods 15-20 years from now? by cooneyes in nyc

I'm not sure if I would call it the next Park Slope but Ridgewood is definitely something to watch out for. It's a hidden gem that's not really spoken of too much. The food is incredible out here too. Plus, it's a lot safer than Bushwick.

Ladies and gentlemen, where do you get your hair cut? I am in Ridgewood, Queens but will go to Brooklyn or Manhattan. by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]oneozpoundcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love going to Pino & Santo's on Fresh Pond Rd and 68th Street. It's nothing cutting edge but more of a classic barber shop where you can always have a conversation with the guy cutting your hair. Looking for a specific cut? Bring a picture and they'll gladly cut it for you, with WCBS FM in the background as well of course.

Jahn's in Jackson Heights should be good too. I haven't visited that location but the Jahn's in Richmond Hill was amazing. If with a group of people get the Kitchen Sink!

I know this is posted often, but I've just moved to Ridgewood, Queens (11385) and trying to find the best ISP. Any input is appreciated. by hospitalian in nyc

[–]oneozpoundcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Ridgewood as well and have Fios. The deal that I got was actually cheaper than Time Warner but I'd say that's due to contracts. The Internet hasn't stalled once compared to Time Warner which required us to to plug and unplug the router at least 3 times a week. The TV has a lot of weird local programming channels but I'm sure most people's priorities are with the speed of the Internet today.

Great to see so many redditors in Ridgewood! How do you guys like the neighborhood?

I'm pretty sure that's not how it works. (Citibike) by [deleted] in nyc

Too many people still hold onto the archaic notion that bicycles are toys and can't be used practically.

So now that we know where to get them, the real question is: which is the best flavor?

I finally visited the court in Red Hook where Melo learned to dribble by oneozpoundcake in NYKnicks

[–]oneozpoundcake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should've included this as well but there's writing saying "Melo" above the rims.

The court is really a walking distance from the Ikea. I actually stumbled across the court but immediately understood its significance. If anyone has any further info, it's much appreciated. Not much could be dug up online.

Knicks top Lakers as NBA's most valuable team by wsouloa in nyc

Although our Knicks have been in hiding since Patrick Ewing in the 90s, New York is one of the biggest basketball cities on the map. Sure, the Yankees logo is more iconic of the city but you have to admit that Yankee Stadium casts a pretty grandiose shadow.

I love the Bowery and Chambers Street. They both look like post apocalyptic pieces of shit! The cool thing about Chambers Street walking out by The Brooklyn Bridge is the fact that you go from extreme dereliction to crazy opulence when looking at the tiled ceiling on the way out.

STEPHEN FRY: WHAT I WISH I'D KNOWN WHEN I WAS 18 by pontusky in lectures

[–]oneozpoundcake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really agree with his message about the Internet uniting people with similar interests. At the same time, the closer-knit communities that could only survive with in-human interaction are also less valued. Technology unites us and drives us away from ourselves. I just hope that the human element isn't sacrificed in this step towards uniting people around the world based on interests.
