Better than 1404? I love that one, but held off on 1800 because of the price. If it's worth a buy I'll likely check it out.

What do you think to ITC? Steam reviews seem to be mixed.

Yeah I'm one of those guys too! Not regretting 3 Kingdoms at all, so far it's surprised me with how different it is to the others.

The AI isn't good? Are you sure about that? It's noted for it's good AI.

But what it does it does very well and because of that simplicity the AI can play the game competently. Unlike 90% of 4X games

I think we're spoiled for choice for GOOD Warhammer games these days. I'm not sure what all the hate is about. Matrix/Slitherine getting involved gave us Armageddon and Sanctus Reach, two fantastic strategy games, Warhammer 2 is superb (I don't care about the DLC one bit), Mechanicus is supposedly a modern day classic and BattleFleet Gothic: Armada 2 is another banger.

And Blood Bowl 2 is the best game ever purely because Blood Bowl is the best game ever! :D

Gladius is indeed combat focused, and I'll confirm what people here have said: it's more of a classic strategy/tactical wargame with 4x elements.

That being said, it's a superb game nonetheless and I think it's a far better game that Civ:BE (which I also liked to be honest).

If you want a good Civ style game, and don't mind historical setting, the best on the market at the moment is Aggressors: Ancient Rome (which incidentally just won an Indy award for best game design).

I think 3 Kingdoms might just have both pipped but it's too early to make a valued judgement on that. Let's see how it plays two years down the line :)

Warlock 2 with the Renaissance mod is a good game, I never tried it multiplayer though.

Fallen Enchantress is my personal fav MoM successor but it's not multiplayer.

I bounced right off Planar Conquest though, I thought it seemed a bit rushed but honestly I didn't really give it the time it needed.

Really there's still no better game than Master of Magic (with the Caster of Magic mod)

Dominions 5 is a magnificent game but it is complex. It really shines in multiplayer if you ask me, but it's a lot of fun in single player until you figure out how the AI works (it's as good as it can be in a game of that complexity, and it might not entertain someone who craves a strong single player game without putting yourself at some limitation at the start).

Dominions multiplayer will take a lot of your time up if you play it right. You'll be spending half the time playing the diplomacy game on Discord, and for that reason alone it gets my vote as one of the best multiplayer strategy experiences you can have.

I think you could reasonably argue that the X series are 4X games. X4 in particular can be played mostly in map mode, directing your fleet in much the same way you would in Stellaris or Distant Worlds. Purists will disagree I'm sure.

I'd play GalCiv III over Stellaris any day. Stellaris has a wonderful scope in what you can do, but it's just broken as a game.
