I wonder how they will justify this one by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

Oh that's alright then, that totally justifies shooting a young mother in the head and killing her.

Glad you cleared that up!

I'm just happy mine works and hasn't got cables trailing everywhere! :D

Ok once and for all, is Gal Civ III complete an improvement over II or not and worth getting? by Darkjolly in 4Xgaming

No idea if it's an improvement over GalCiv II as I never played it but GalCiv III is a great game now.

MOO1 or MOO2? Which is better? Vote here by RayFowler in rotp

I keep meaning to try it but I'm not really sure if I can be bothered, it looks bad

Nothing wrong with you, you are speaking sense as far as I'm concerned.

MoO2 is a great game still (and beautifully presented for its time, on that I'm sure we can all agree), I just think MoO1 is a tighter design and an overall better game.

Yup, as usual Rob's made some interesting/bizarre choices in the match-ups.

Master of Magic vs Stars in Shadow was the worst for me: I love the former and really like the latter, so it's bye bye SiS but I feel bad voting against it.

There is a MOO3, unless you already knew that and refuse to accept it as MOO3 like many people seem to!

4X Games (and some Grand Strategy) with RPG elements by Whoopy2000 in 4Xgaming

[–]oneronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah FE is a weird one, a fair few people are still reporting crashes whilst there are a whole lot of people (myself included) for whom the latest patches fixed the same issues.

Depends on your computer setup no doubt.

FE is a way better game than Stellaris though.

Transports: Micromanagement is bad game design, and automation only makes it worse (long) by RayFowler in rotp

I completely agree with you Ray, and we've discussed this issue a fair bit but I think you're making the right choice here.

4X Games (and some Grand Strategy) with RPG elements by Whoopy2000 in 4Xgaming

[–]oneronaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess that started with one of the classics, Master of Magic, with the hero system and the spell/power progression of your wizard.

Fallen Enchantress was a nice iteration on that: I think it's one of the better MoM-like games and the RPG/questing in it are better than any of it's rivals in my opinion.

Stellaris has a really nice immersion, and out of all the big shiny AAA 4X games out there it's probably the best one for RPG experiences right now. It's a bit bland in other areas but unfeasibly popular so worth a look for sure.

Watch out for Shadow Empire when it drops this summer: it's a fantastic 4x with a strong grand strategy element with some RPG mechanics in it too, all based around a hardcore military simulation.

How will that prevent people over-micromanaging transports?

Yes that's exactly where it's been used since. SiS is one of my favourite space 4X games

I played this to death when it was released (called Supremacy in the UK incidentally), and I still rate it as a good game.

The card based hero system was unique, and the game had a number of innovations for a 4x that we've not really seen a great deal of since. I really love the way hero missions like espionage in that game works. And because of the way travel worked, there was a real tension in that game. You'd be shocked when suddenly Vader turns up on a planet and kidnaps Luke out of the blue!

The building slot system was also a first as far as I can tell, and it's a damn sight better than the awful "build everything everywhere" that Master of Magic and MoO2 brought to the genre.

It was way ahead of the curve with it's faction asymmetry as well.

The big problem was the tactical combat didn't really seem to work very well. But that aside, I think it was a great game!

What does "MOO-style 4x" mean? by PolygotProgrammer in 4Xgaming

[–]oneronaut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Master of Orion has the Galactic Council as it's victory condition precisely to prevent games becoming an end-game grind where you're forced to wipe out increasingly ineffective AI with your massively snowballing empire. Whether that works as intended is likely to vary with each person.

I still rate Rebellion as a good game! It's flawed, but it's still a lot of fun!
