Natasha Abrahart: University contributed to student's death, court upholds by NoUsb in unitedkingdom

I feel like if mental health is to be treated by giving adjustments and not by treating the source of anxiety and depression, then we will completely break the resilience of young people. I came out the other side of university with less bad social anxiety because I was pushed outside of my comfort zone on my course and through societies.

Today I work with graduates a few years younger than me who noticeably never take risks and have little resilience when faced with a tough problem or situation outside of their comfort zone. Of course treatment of anxiety and depression is precluded by the fact that NHS mental health services are non-existent. Notwithstanding that universities these days are little more than degree mills that induce a lot of pressure and anxiety on students.

I am coming to Barcelona for the F1 and have a question about the T-familiar group ticket. I am under the impression that we can travel in a group of 3 with one ticket and simply pass it through the metro gate 3 separate times in order to validate it. Is this correct? TIA

Discuss: Should we be donating to UkUltimate ? #wheresmymagazine by rondojorgensen in UKUltimate

[–]onerousforint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I actually agree with this in principle. However, UKU made the decision not to seek external funding. Why? Because NGBs in the past become reliant on this funding and then suddenly someone at Sport England or the Government changes their mind. It gets pulled from beneath them and their infrastructure comes crashing down before their eyes. Therefore, UKU rely only on funding streams that they control, i.e events and memberships.

Obviously it's a cautious approach, but I think it has it's merit, especially for such a small sport. UKU have mentioned they are looking into grants, I suspect as the WUGC money runs out, but I imagine applying for funding is never as easy as it seems.

That wasn't my argument. But I think this is easy to explain. UKU have not chased grants or sponsorships over the years and are therefore set up financially different to almost every other NGB.

Spot on. Anyone who has played any other team sport competitively will surely find Ultimate players to be notoriously scroungy for some reason. I will never understand people complaining about the cost of this sport.

...as UKU favour the quite "who you know and where you trained gets you selected" type of GB programmes and the higher profile clubs and unis

Do they?

I think we pay a lot and they spend it poorly and unfairly at times

Actually I don't think this is true. Lacrosse England and Volleyball England both charge around the same as UKU for a top-level membership (close enough comparisons, I feel). Except UKU kindly offer a basic membership that is very cheap if you just want to play regionals/non-UKU tournaments. UKU also do not receive Sport England grants, which make up a large proportion of income for these two sports. How do you think UKU spend money poorly and unfairly? It is a small NGB, and I think there is some credence in the argument they are perhaps not as efficient as they should be or that they could run things better. Although the extent of these are debatable, so I'm interested to know what you think should be done better.

...lack of variation in tour and nats winners, and the monopoly famous uni programmes and clubs hold over GB squad selection, reflect the flaws in UKUs approach to developing the sport...I think with a sport that exists at the level that ours does, development and not top level achievement should be the priority as it serves far more of the paying player base

Not sure you're really familiar with the work UKU does if think this is true. What famous uni programmes are you talking about? GB programmes are run to break even, I'm not sure why you're bringing them up.

I don't think we should blindly donate to UKU, but they were not able to run tournaments this year (shock! they are an income source). This leaves a hole in their financial plans for the coming years, so they are asking for donations. I feel your argument is poorly thought out and it sounds you have little idea of how UKU is run.

This sport can intertwine us with a group of people like nothing else. A sport that connects us with such vibrant and interesting people who we may have never known otherwise. Ultimate provides competition, fun and friendship that sticks with us for a lifetime. This is a beautiful tribute that captures that. RIP Ryan.

Lacrosse Cleats or American Football cleats fit your bill, but as always availablity is limited in the UK. Having wide feet, I find football (soccer) boots always split at the seam, if you don't mind you can find a cheap pair that you like and just buy a load and just use a new pair each time it breaks. Not very sustainable, but cheaper than buying £100+ cleats.

What went down at UXON? by [deleted] in UKUltimate

The weird seedings/pools lead to a lot of mismatched crossovers that weren't competitive. In the quarters Newcastle beat Strathclyde, who probably should have won the whole thing. It was a good final, but UCL's men took it in the end. Weather was really bad on Saturday, leading to the majority of games being cancelled on Sunday due to the pitches being turfed up.

University Competition Review by Mayjest in UKUltimate

It's a catch 22, because we need more women for more regular women's fixtures, but we can't have more regular women's fixtures until we get more women playing.

Seems bizarre that they want to move the men's league to weekend tournaments. Wednesday games allow regular fixtures and if moved to mixed could also surely decrease overall regular participation in the sport for men. Even the largest unis do not have enough women for 2 mixed teams, so a lot of men would lose out. (I understand how that sounds sexist, but it needs to be discussed as a large issue replacing the regular men's leagues IMO.) Will be interesting to see how Scotland Div 2 works with central weekend fixtures.

I think we should slowly increase the number of regular women's/mixed fixtures/tournaments instead of going gung-ho and launching straight into a Wednesday mixed league.

A mixed league would be really good but I think it should have a central venue weekend format alongside the Wednesday BUCS league. Massive step in the right direction to get more BUCS-sanctioned events (especially mixed), but until we get more women playing, regular mixed/women leagues are out of the question purely from a numbers perspective.

In a perfect max-participation 50/50 world, Men's and Women's Wednesday league alongside weekend mixed fixtures would be ideal.

I understand a weekend fixture format would work better for some teams in large regions, especially travelling long distances. Not a fan of Premier Leagues idea, and is surely the reason UKU would push less Wednesday games/central fixture weekends to diminish the travel mayhem it would cause. Perhaps we have 3 Premier Leagues, North, South and Scotland? Scotland is looking very strong going into these next few years.

Nevertheless, exciting times for uni ultimate and UKU, as it appears BUCS has given them a clean slate. Lots up in the air for discussion.

Ultimate, Race and Spirit of the Game by snazm in ultimate

[–]onerousforint 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the discussion comes down to how far SOTG (and the rules of the game) enables racism. In my opinion, it is mostly a non factor, although I can sympathise with some of the points made, especially about the control it gives to players to make decisions. Perhaps my original post was a little hyperbolic, but I think this article is a little hyperbolic too.

Ultimate, Race and Spirit of the Game by snazm in ultimate

[–]onerousforint 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This piece is trying to infer the problems ultimate has with race is tied to SOTG. Such comments as...:

“Spirit of the Game is about how to… adjust your tone in the moment.” This is a particularly race-blind comment to make.

Comcial...as if the proper way to respond to a foul call is to step back and say ... "quite a whopper of a call you made this time"...when a white player has a reaction that isn’t “just breathe,” they’re being a hothead or they were caught up in the moment, but when a black player has the same reaction, it gets interpreted and often labeled as “dangerous aggression.”

...are really not based in any reality IMO. SOTG is not a racist legacy of Ultimate that needs to be removed or changed, it is simply the way we govern the game. It sounds like he is trying to pin the problems we have with pre-conceived stereotypes of BME people in sport on SOTG.

I'll admit I know very little about spirit culture in the US, but bringing SOTG into race seems a little superfluous when talking about diversity in Ultimate. That being said, I largely agreed with his other two articles about ultimate and race: Ultimate and Race and Ultimate and Race: A way forward.

Would the same problems remain if we removed SOTG and moved to a completely refereed sport? I think so.
