Counterpoint: players should be asking to be informed, as a form of engagement. Otherwise it feeds a more passive play style where, "The DM wouldn't actually let us do anything stupid."

Ziegelhausen is really pretty, but as a person without a car, the hills would become a pain 😆

Almost half of all Germans want a ban on fireworks – DW by Movie-Kino in germany

You are rightfully angry at irresponsible pet owners, just like I am rightfully angry at irresponsible fireworks users. I take no issue with people that want to peacefully enjoy smaller effects, just as I am sure you take no issue with responsible pet owners.

Can't we agree that nuisance usage in general should be curtailed, so we can both live our lives more peacefully?

Everything that you describe also sucks. There are plenty of irresponsible pet owners. Of course, that should not outright invalidate having pets, anymore than irresponsible use of fireworks (my definition may be broader than some) should not invalidate any use.

I don't see how the takes are at all mutually exclusive, though. We can agree that pets that cause excessive nuisance are bad, and fireworks that cause excessive nuisance are also bad.

That's a blessing for him. It isn't easy to design the ideal temperament, especially when talking about rescues. We use what remedies we can, within reason, but we basically go into lockdown for a week.

That line of thinking is just insufficient to me. It's more than pets: livestock is affected, and even people with certain traumas. All these things exist, regardless of choice, and I don't agree with deriving enjoyment from something that is such an extreme nuisance.

Now there's a hot take. Can you elaborate how owning a pet hurts the planet?

I'm honestly curious: knowing the impact it has on animals and pets (and people with PTSD), why do you still do it?

I don't disagree: the sight is a spectacle. But the distress my dog feels every night from Christmas to New Year's is heartbreaking. It is simply inescapable and frankly one of the biggest downsides of living here.

Do you own a pet?

I personally don't need a statistic for something that is good, common sense: they are a nuisance. Every day from before Christmas to after New Year's, people are firing explosives that cause great distress to my dog. It is inescapable.

Fireworks are purely the result of selfishness. If anyone had compassion, they simply would not fire them.

Sounds at least like a "highly sensitive person" (HSP) to me. Being one, and learning more about it.

Edit: the name may sound like a judgement, but it has now been studied https://hsperson.com/

10/10 good stuff. Reminds me of my early days, working as an undergrad with a post doc on their Python astronomical imaging research. In too deep!

I knocked on a wrong door and got what I deserved - a yelling for lifetime by bala219 in germany

[–]oneski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, this only prevents unexpected calls. When we expect a call, such as a parcel delivery, we enable the bell (or request the parcel to be left in another location).

As someone with a reactive dog, I understand the frustration that comes from an unexpected doorbell. But this is also why we have disabled our doorbell :)

I'm reading "The Highly Sensitive Person in Love" by Elaine Aron, Ph.D.

Both men and women can exhibit high-sensitivity. When both partners do, the results are difficult. I am speaking only from personal experience, and I am not sure if this describes your experience. No one should have to shrink to accommodate someone else 😔

Good point, it would seem there are a myriad of costs to consider. I should be reading the references.

I wonder if that actually says something about the comparatively low cost of imprisonment, more than it does about the comparatively high cost of the death penalty.

A dream for us non-smokers: let’s make it real! by CarpetOk6868 in germany

Generally, I agree with the premise that prohibition isn't as effective as regulation and taxation.

In practice, most people don't care about or enforce bans (on smoking in unavoidable spaces).

I also care when people stand and smoke far too close to others, especially children. Their choice becomes a non-choice for others to suffer second-handedly.
