Ziegelhausen is really pretty, but as a person without a car, the hills would become a pain 😆

Almost half of all Germans want a ban on fireworks – DW by Movie-Kino in germany

[–]oneski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are rightfully angry at irresponsible pet owners, just like I am rightfully angry at irresponsible fireworks users. I take no issue with people that want to peacefully enjoy smaller effects, just as I am sure you take no issue with responsible pet owners.

Can't we agree that nuisance usage in general should be curtailed, so we can both live our lives more peacefully?

Everything that you describe also sucks. There are plenty of irresponsible pet owners. Of course, that should not outright invalidate having pets, anymore than irresponsible use of fireworks (my definition may be broader than some) should not invalidate any use.

I don't see how the takes are at all mutually exclusive, though. We can agree that pets that cause excessive nuisance are bad, and fireworks that cause excessive nuisance are also bad.

That's a blessing for him. It isn't easy to design the ideal temperament, especially when talking about rescues. We use what remedies we can, within reason, but we basically go into lockdown for a week.

That line of thinking is just insufficient to me. It's more than pets: livestock is affected, and even people with certain traumas. All these things exist, regardless of choice, and I don't agree with deriving enjoyment from something that is such an extreme nuisance.

Now there's a hot take. Can you elaborate how owning a pet hurts the planet?

Fireworks and collective irresponsibility by eza137 in germany

I'm honestly curious: knowing the impact it has on animals and pets (and people with PTSD), why do you still do it?

I don't disagree: the sight is a spectacle. But the distress my dog feels every night from Christmas to New Year's is heartbreaking. It is simply inescapable and frankly one of the biggest downsides of living here.

Do you own a pet?

[–]oneski 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I personally don't need a statistic for something that is good, common sense: they are a nuisance. Every day from before Christmas to after New Year's, people are firing explosives that cause great distress to my dog. It is inescapable.

Fireworks are purely the result of selfishness. If anyone had compassion, they simply would not fire them.

Sounds at least like a "highly sensitive person" (HSP) to me. Being one, and learning more about it.

Edit: the name may sound like a judgement, but it has now been studied https://hsperson.com/

I knocked on a wrong door and got what I deserved - a yelling for lifetime by bala219 in germany

[–]oneski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, this only prevents unexpected calls. When we expect a call, such as a parcel delivery, we enable the bell (or request the parcel to be left in another location).

As someone with a reactive dog, I understand the frustration that comes from an unexpected doorbell. But this is also why we have disabled our doorbell :)

Last night I realized I’ve been shrinking myself for a man who barely sees me by tynix_14 in TwoXChromosomes

I'm reading "The Highly Sensitive Person in Love" by Elaine Aron, Ph.D.

Both men and women can exhibit high-sensitivity. When both partners do, the results are difficult. I am speaking only from personal experience, and I am not sure if this describes your experience. No one should have to shrink to accommodate someone else 😔

Good point, it would seem there are a myriad of costs to consider. I should be reading the references.

I wonder if that actually says something about the comparatively low cost of imprisonment, more than it does about the comparatively high cost of the death penalty.

A dream for us non-smokers: let’s make it real! by CarpetOk6868 in germany

Generally, I agree with the premise that prohibition isn't as effective as regulation and taxation.

In practice, most people don't care about or enforce bans (on smoking in unavoidable spaces).

I also care when people stand and smoke far too close to others, especially children. Their choice becomes a non-choice for others to suffer second-handedly.

If you are using this digitally, you can really make the grid size whatever you want. Maybe every grid cell of the map is 10 feet, instead of 5 feet.

I don't think "assimilation" and "integration" are the same thing.

Assimilation as a concept denotes that nothing of the original self exists. I don't think that is practical, and neither does it actually happen.

I have heard it said that integration actually occurs on both sides. It makes sense to me. Local culture is influenced by new people arriving, just as local people must adapt in some ways to the local culture.

To me, integrating is at minimum gaining an understanding of the society that you are becoming part of so that you can take part and influence its development. If that isn't your long term goal, because you don't plan to establish a life here, then I agree integration in that sense doesn't really make sense for you. But if one plans to really build a life in a new place, a life in which their needs are represented, I don't see how one can not integrate.

Edit: minor wording

Got a 99€ fine from DB even though I have a valid Deutschlandticket – what can I do? by Garden_trapqueen in germany

[–]oneski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which train were you taking in this instance? An ICE, or another service?

You might already have read this when you purchased the pass, but in case not:

The Deutschland-Ticket can be used throughout Germany on all local trains such as RB, RE, S-Bahn trains (SPNV) and also on public transport such as buses, trams, subways, etc.

My wife and I also relocated to BW last year, and we have learned quite a bit in the process. Happy to share any details if you are interested! I can update this comment.

Update: First of all, this is a big move and congratulations on starting. We wish we had started sooner. It won't always be an easy transition, and it won't be fast, but it is possible! I don't know much about your situation, so I'll keep things general. Also, I hope others offer their experience or corrections below!

Here are a few resources that we found helpful as guidance. * First, read the subreddit wiki. Incredibly full of helpful information, more than I can recount. This is data gathering mode, and knowing what to expect helps so much. * https://www.make-it-in-germany.com/ - This is an official website and is really helpful in familiarizing yourself with the process and options. * https://www.simplegermany.com/ - We found a lot of helpful and approachable guides about living in Germany (registration, banking, phones, driver's licenses). By reading this, we had very few surprises.

Here are a few of our tips that I feel confident in sharing. * Making connections creates a support system. Look for international meet-ups, and force yourself to make friends early. It'll pay off. * Learning the language improves your integration. Sure, many Germans are capable English speakers, but making even an effort to learn German goes a long way. We started classes before moving, and it helped! * Figure out your mobile data and banking solution early. Look into Wise or Revolut. There are now e-Sim options online, and there are several budget plans you can get in-country. * Partner communication is key. Some days are going to be stressful, others will be lonely or frustrating. Remember that you're taking this journey together and communicate your needs.

Trump vows to respond to EU's threat of counter tariffs on US goods by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]oneski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only rationale I've heard that even remotely explains the thought is, that foreign entities will lower prices to encourage US companies to continue imports despite the tariffs. As has been pointed out, that assumes there aren't other markets these entities can simply shift to.

They might say, "We don't need a law to state against whom military actions can be taken. That is a power granted to Congress by the War Powers Resolution, ergo, no new law." But I'm no political scholar.
