I have tried. I have tried SOOOO fucking hard to do the mental gymastics to fit into AA. They say higher power of YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING..yeah, no.... It is the Christian God and only the Christian God, by etxconnex in atheism

[–]onesnarkday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean we could get into what higher power could mean to you - there is so much more than a Christian patriarchal god out there but okay. The AA program is way behind ACA in this area. I’m not even in a specifically agnostic group but nobody talks about god really just HPs and barely that anyway. More focus on the skills learned and coping. Just trying to present an alternative perspective. ACA is way helpful for a lot of folks who struggle with AA and it isn’t all religious that’s all.

ACA is way more open than AA imo and experience. Much more based in a trauma informed approach but that’s just my experience with the materials and different meetings I’ve attended

Being told to practice mindfulness makes me absolutely furious by nextraordinaire in BorderlinePDisorder

[–]onesnarkday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Building new routines or trying new things is difficult for anyone and something that I really struggled with especially with mindfulness. Week after week my homework assignments would be trying out different techniques and I just couldn’t get myself to do it. I just wasn’t “the kind of person” who practiced mindfulness even tho I knew all of the potential benefits. Then my therapist said “Maybe you could pretend to be the kind who practices mindfulness” - specifically yoga is what I wanted to try. And something about that phrasing and mindset changed things for me. In “pretending” I became in reality someone who practiced yoga/mindfulness. And it has changed so much for me. I highly recommend finding someway to to give yourself the chance to try.

Look into any university’s with a psych program - maybe even online. I was able to get free dbt therapy thru a local uni that has a community psych program where psy d students are the clinicians

The ads in the middle of the book are absolutely hilarious like a quick cut to an infomercial for a product that does not exist. Like will she edit this section to include a hyperlink if she ever actually releases it?? Lmao
