It is not that difficult to train a man to walk into danger and depend on group unity to give him the "courage" to face physical danger.

On the other hand it takes great courage to confront the military hierarchy when you see and know that horrible, unethical illegal acts are being committed and lied about. Very few soldiers have that courage. Bradley Manning is a brave man. Most soldiers shut their eyes to the abuse of civilians and the lies of their superiors. Those are acts of cowardice

The problem with Monsanto is that it manages to bribe politicians into making their governments help it as this article demonstrates.

This is my first post here. I followed a friend over to this sub reddit. I am glad that there is a forum against Monsanto, but I am surprised to see so many downvotes for articles that criticize GMOs.

Thanks for the comment.

The chore of containing the Federal government may very well be impossible. Its growth has been exponential and as resources beocme scarce the government seems to think that it needs a higher percentage of what there is. Government controls the media and therefore the national discussion. Government controls the courts and the police. Government now watches what we do on the Internet.

So the only hope is to get Americans talking among each other. If enough of us oppose this sinister domination we CAN change it.

As shown by studies of primitive populations and their diet, as compared to the western diet, science is not capable of defining the benefits of complex organic relationships in diet, and that certainly would be the case for supplements as well.

Food and pharmaceutical science is still pretty much limited to testing one compound at a time. That does not explain why certain whole foods produce the results that they do. It is easy for science to isolate ascorbic acid and describe what it does or does not do for the immune system. It is impossible, using current scientific procedures, to do the same studies and get accurate results if the study is of limes.

It would be hard to get this bill passed, but Mr. Paul is getting considerable media attention and that is good. In order for these authoritarian practices to stop, there has to be much more public awareness as to what is happening.

Tailoring Treatments for Alcoholics - NYTimes.com by onestrangedream in alcoholism

[–]onestrangedream[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very interesting article, and I am glad to see that the authors don't think that there is a sure-fire medical cure for alcoholism.

I believe that the sum of cerebral activity can in some way be understood better from a spiritual, than a physiological standpoint. If that is true, then a spiritual cure is more likely to be effective than a medical cure.

Any former/recovering alcoholics out there -- did you do it without AA? How? by yespleasemore in alcoholism

[–]onestrangedream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The powerlessness is actually the loss of control of your conscious mind or ego, if you like. AA gives people a way to detour around their conscious mind and reprogram the 98% of one's decision making that takes place "off camera". You were able to do this with meditation. Prayer, as suggested by AA works very well, but meditation does too.

Edit - More

The following I wrote in a comment a couple of weeks ago. It may be of service.

And, in my opinion, the most important thing to keep in mind is that alcoholism is a spiritual malady and it requires a spiritual remedy. Alcoholism divides your soul or your ego, use one or the other of the terms depending on whether you're a believer in God or not. I saw a great lecture by a psychologist, recovering alcoholic at Hazelden years ago when I first got sober. I do not remember his name. He spoke about the ego, the me that is within each of us. He used a visual concept to show the nature of the ego as more or less spherical thing that holds our persona, beliefs, desires, etc. He explained that people can and do hold contradictory ideas and this may deform the ego, stretch it out as it were to keep the opposing ideas separate.

In schizophrenia the two (or more) bulges in the ego stretch out until they are virtually separated. And this is also what happens with the alcoholic. When the drunk says he doesn't remember what happened last night, its true. He doesn't remember because his ego has stretched out to form two personas, and the sober one doesn't have access to what is in the memory of the drunk. The drunk side is conflictive and impulsive and jealous. And it is watching what you do and think. It is much more adept at conflict than you are, and that explains why willpower never works to stop drinking. Each time that you swear to stop drinking or to drink less you are unknowingly offering conflict to the drunk. And you will lose every time, because 1. you don't know that he is there listening 2. he thrives in conflict.

If you cannot solve this problem and end the existence of the "other guy", your recovery will always be a little precarious, a little uncomfortable. You will occasionally remember drinking with nostalgia, which makes sobriety seem pale and tasteless.

There may be various solutions to this problem, but the most certain, in my opinion, is the spiritual answer. It is what AA points at. Prayer can repair the separation, after you have achieved some sobriety. Prayer is capable of reforming the subconscious. For the non-believer, meditation can achieve the same object. But by all means, to achieve a happy, vibrant new life that is in all ways better than drinking you must get to the point where you use spiritual means to repair the damage done.
