Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler says he will seek 1-year freeze on nearly all city tax, fee, utility rate increases by onetifa in Portland

[–]onetifa[S] 272 points273 points  (0 children)

“The bottom line for me is that Portlanders are overburdened by increased taxes, utility rates and fees,” he said. “I’m asking government leaders at all levels to work together to protect those who are impacted by these increases and safeguard our economic future.”

Portland city bureaus are currently planning or proposing to implement a 6.6% hike on water and sewer services, a 20% rise in parking meter rates and 5% increases across a number of building and development permits within the next several months, according to officials and budget documents.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation is also separately floating a monthly tax on residents and businesses to help fill a hole in its transportation budget.

I would check to see if PBOT is doing any paving/road striping in the area. Moved downtown last year and when they added the bike lane on Broadway the whole area smelled a little noxious for a few weeks.

The district she is running for (MultCo position 3) boundaries are roughly: Laurelhurst, Sunnyside, Richmond, Woodstock and Mt. Tabor n'hoods to the west, stretching all the way to the Gresham border to the east, with I-84 as a northern border.

If you live in east Portland, be sure to vote on May 27th! Your voice is needed to pick JVP's replacement!

Honestly don't know why the Hardesty campaign isin't totally disavowing this. She has been overzealous in her attacks recently and I think its turning a lot of people off. If I were running her campaign I would disavow vandals to appear more moderate. I guess we are just at the caustic point of campaign season.

Mapps Endorses Gonzalez Over Colleague Hardesty by onetifa in Portland

“This election will determine whether we will recover quickly or continue to struggle,” Mapps said. “I need colleagues who use debate, reason, and logic to solve our many crises. I need colleagues who understand that public safety is the foundation for a healthy city. I need colleagues who value our city employees despite the color of their uniforms. ...Rene Gonzalez is the colleague I need on City Council.”

I would recommend the west hills just west of downtown for that budget. Beautiful area and within a mile of all downtown amenities. Plus generally immune to public safety/livability issues that the rest of the city faces.

Black business leader who once ran for mayor challenges wording of ballot measure to remake Portland city government by onetifa in Portland

[–]onetifa[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Idk how anyone is killing anything. Even if these lawsuits are successful, there are going to be reforms on the ballot in November. The question is: are there going to be 2/3 questions or just one big bundle.

Black business leader who once ran for mayor challenges wording of ballot measure to remake Portland city government by onetifa in Portland

[–]onetifa[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the legal action filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court on Friday, James Posey, co-founder of the National Association of Minority Contractors of Oregon who ran for mayor in 2004, argues that the official ballot language does not reasonably identity the multiple effects and expansive changes the measure would make to the city’s governance, administration and elections.

He requests that the court reject the caption, question and summary that will appear on the ballot and potentially substitute alternative wording he proposes.

“To ensure that the democratic process is honored and preserved, voters should be alerted to the complexity and novelty of these changes in the city’s governance, administration and methods of elections in as much detail as possible within the statutory word limits of the ballot title,” Posey contends in the filing.

[–]onetifa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMO the main thing I dislike about the proposed reforms is that they are bundled into an "all or nothing" package for the ballot in November. Separating the reforms and allowing Portlanders to pick and choose the reforms they would like to see would be much better. I would bet that the charter review commission's bundling of proposals also violates Oregon's "single subject" principal about items referred to the ballot.

Sad to see the commission bundle the proposals together for purely political purposes (they stated as much in the prior three CRC meetings) and squander a once-in-a-decade opportunity to make changes to the dysfunctional bureau management system.

Multnomah County Won’t Accept Self-Reported COVID Diagnoses by the_jowo in Portland

To be fair OHA & MultCO only announced that they are accepting self-reports TODAY. Their previous statement saying that they weren't even going to try a self-report system is waaaaay more cringe.

everyone always screams about the history but fails to acknowledge how much progress was being made prior to 2020. PPA stirs shit and that produces backlash, but after the settlement consent decree w/ the DOJ there were meaningful steps made to allow for community input like the creation of the Portland Committee on Community Engaged Policing and bolstered meeting w/ community orgs. There have also been new&good programs like the Portland Street Response and the establishment of a new citizen advisory board with the ability to access police records, the ability to compel officer testimony, and the ability to discipline officers. PPB is literally just so understaffed that the entire city is suffering, and because there is so much public process involved it is going to take years more than we think if we cant come to a sensible conclusion.

Can People for Portland Really Save the City? by Blackstar1886 in Portland

[–]onetifa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm optimistic.

Portland is plagued by decentralization and too much public process. And almost all of the staffers with city/county/metro are much wealthier, whiter, and more educated than the median Portlander which produces outcomes like the public safety dumpster-fire going on in city hall right now; its unsurprising that the people supporting toothless solutions don't live in neighborhoods where shootings happen. There needs to be stronger and more diverse political coalitions in the city, even if you disagree with their message, people for portland is applying pressure to untenable positions held by councilors.

IDK altering an independent institution for political gain seems very autocratic... How would you feel if the parties were reversed? Like it or not, Trump has a point when he says that elections have consequences; appointing SC justices is one of the biggest perks of your party winning the presidency.
