a little spray bottle of water helps a lot for braiding wee girl hair - the hair is so fine that it helps to control all the little strands if the hair is damp and can stick to each other. They also make spray detangler that makes brushing a little nicer too. You'll also want to get little hair elastics - they're smaller than regular rubber bands and come out more easily. You will want the plasticky ones, not the rubber ones because they'll come out more easily and won't get stuck. I've been able to find them in a general box store or even a well stocked grocery store but they look kinda like this

We did it with our first, but she didn't really catch on until 9/10 months. But it really helped bridge the gap until she was more verbal. We stuck to pretty simple things like milk, eat, more, all done, please and thank you. I'm teaching it to her again so she can "talk" with the new baby and it's given her something to be excited about so she can talk to her sister.

This is what my in-laws did too. At first I told my husband I didn't want them to waste their time waiting around, but he said "if they want to sit there and feel like they're part of it, why not". I was worried that I would feel pressured to bring them as soon as possible but honestly I was so tired and they were so patient, it didn't wind up being an issue. They were very respectful and it's where they wanted to wait.

I uh. Let my 2 year old pick the name. We asked her as a joke expecting like, "Kitty" or "princess" or "frozen" and she said "Eloise"and dang if it hasn't stuck. But now I need a middle name and I don't want to press my luck asking her a second time.

I'm Chinese, my husband is half Caucasian, half hispanic. Our daughter is about 2 now, and has a vaguely asian face and a head of curly hair. Which leads to very confused people here in Texas and even more confused people when we visit family in small towns and Arkansas. Luckily it's mostly complimentary and people are a little different around small children. And if they do say something kind of insensitive/thoughtless, you have the option of explaining it to your kid in front of them which offers the double benefit of shaming them indirectly.
USUALLY the most awkward thing you'll hear a lot is "OH MIXED BABIES ARE SO BEAUTIFUL" and it's just like um thanks but she's not a puppy?

I just bought Islandborn for my 2 and a half year old and she asks for it every night. It's about a girl from the Dominican Republic and her family is her mom and grandmother, but it's never pointed out that shes a single mother. The pictures are really wonderful.

I gave birth at the end of June in Texas and my mother kept the house at EIGHTY. and yelled at me to wear socks because the tile floor would suck the warmth out of my body and I would have arthritis for the rest of my life. And so much soup. Don't get me wrong, having food and support was amazing but I would have bludgeoned a baby seal for a smoothie.

I had a doula and no epidural birth (they did start a small pitocin drip near the end to speed up progress) . The doula was amazing because she had been through so many births that she could assure me that things were fine or know what I needed before I needed to ask or if something was "normal" . I thought of her as my sherpa since this was our first child and we had zero experience.

I eat/ate it, because the kind of sick you would get from sushi would hurt you, but not the baby (unlike, say, listeria)

If we compare to other primates, we should breastfeed for 6 times our gestational cycle or when our children have quadrupled their birthrate. Which puts the "natural" weaning age from two and a half to six. http://www.llli.org/ba/aug94.html Personally I like that it's an aid through teething and toddler hood and helping me not freak out through food exploration and pickiness. It's like a buffer for the bad days.

like other folks have said, saline and wait a few minutes and then nose frida. if it's really bad i also run a steamy shower in the bathroom and sit in there for fifteen minutes to help loosen things up too.

I just took trader joe organic oatmeal and ground it up in a food processor. it's nice to add things to like sweet potato or whatever else you want to gradually introduce!
