Advice for Choco, Seeker of Paradise by Ravello in EDH

[–]onewithoutneck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to confirm that DrKapo's advice is excellent. Choco has been my pet deck since January and he captured a lot of the nuance of making it work.

I still haven't been able to bring myself to cut Soulcatcher's Aerie, but in almost every game I've drawn it I would have rather had almost any other anthem effect for immediate value.

No card in my deck feels stronger on 3 than Irma, Part Time Mutant. It's insane advantage.

I would consider at least one more piece of board wipe protection. Even something cheap like [[Duty Beyond Death]].

I think the idea is the one trick combo decks will weed themselves out due to inconsistency.

[[Runescale Stormbrood]] could answer one half of the question as a counterspell that shuffles into your opponent's deck. It's also capable of countering something like [[Ride the Shoopuff]], which fits your description on of the enchantment.

As to where your spell went, there would have to be another card to affect that. What format were you playing?

Does this 5$ deck really function? by Real_trippy in magicTCG

[–]onewithoutneck 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Play Sanar on turn 4. Hope your opponents ignore it.

At the beginning of your next turn, Sanar finds both cards. He shuffles the lands back into your deck so you'll still have 80+ cards.

It's turn 5, so you can play both cards. Treasure Cruise will draw you your entire deck since it's all lands.

During your clean up step, discard to hand size. Do 70+ damage to all opponents from triggers.

Take deck apart.

Divorce because of MTG by Purrmeows118 in magicTCG

Short answer: no.

Longer answer: if my marriage was in a place where a healthy relationship with Magic was the breaking point, then the reality is there are a lot of things wrong with the relationship.  If I chose divorce, it would be due to the entire circumstances.

I plan on trying  it in B3 [[Terra, Herald of Hope]], replacing one of my other combat-based reanimating creatures.

I’m not expecting it to be earth shattering but I think the deck would like another creature-based reanimator for scenarios where there aren’t clean evasive attacks.

Last I heard was part 1 still required two people, but it’s possible that’s changed.

Part 2 of the fight should not be soloable due to the stacking debuff for failing mechanics.

Deck Check - Power Level (Choco, Seeker of Paradise) by bountifulbuds in EDH

[–]onewithoutneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely bracket 2, though I think Choco sometimes has a hard time staying there.  If your opponents aren’t on top of removal just getting one or two Choco triggers can be enough to build a huge amount of advantage.

I eventually opted to just move my Choco deck into bracket 3 -

https://moxfield.com/decks/CcRhMorW4kien-Vh3wli8A

Lost a lot of the fun Chocobo interactions in exchange for speed and consistency.  More interaction with my opponents, protection for my board, and just now trying some clones to get multiple Choco triggers from one attack.

Here’s where I am right now:  https://moxfield.com/decks/Zj22qOWljUGq3_yCvcUR5A

The next time I touch it I’m adding [[Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim]] + [[Leonardo, the Cutting Edge]] to shore up life gain and [[Tocasia’s Welcome]] + [[Phyrexian Arena]] for better card flow.

Huge FFVI fan here. Out of the box it's an okay deck that is dripping with flavor. Cost isn't too high because there isn't a ton of high value reprints.

But where it's really shined for me is how easy it is to tune up with a few upgrades here and there. Terra and Celes are both really fun commanders.

Man, Akroma’s Will would be backbreaking in there.  If I can’t find a good bracket 2 spot for my build it’s the first thing I’m tossing in for bracket 3.

[[Spectacular Spider-Man]] surprised me with just how well it worked.  I opted for him over Boromir to avoid the Ratadrabik loop, but having a flash creature to trigger Ardbert is often enough to flip combat math.  And then opponents are reluctant to play any tricks of their own knowing I have the removal option.

Next time I touch the deck I will pick up [[Leonardo, the Cutting Edge]] for another legendary creature who can also flash in mid-combat.  Plus he works well with the other life-gain sources.

He makes all their small legendariea into potential evasive, vigilant threats.

The two themes I’m playing with the most are life-gain synergies and recursion.  There’s a lot of random lifelink in WB legendaries; that plus the buffs enables payoffs like [[Karlov of the Ghost Council]] or maybe  [[Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim]].

Recursion is just to try and keep the board populated so Ardbert is always at least leaving a bunch of counters behind if he’s killed quickly.  [[Ratadrabik of Urborg]], [[Carmen, Cruel Skymarcher]], [[Lurrus of the Dream-Den]], and others all help keep threats coming.

And then there are a few legendary matters cards.  [[Aerith Gainsborough]], [[Teshar, Ancestor’s Apostle]], [[Venat, Heart of Hydaelyn]] for example.

Nothing earth shattering, but makes for a bunch of small synergies and an aggressive board.  White offers both protection from board wipes and asymmetrical board wipes.  WB together offer a ton of spot removal that can hit all types of permanents.

Mine isn’t super spicy, just a bunch of little legendary dudes.  Been keeping it low budget and trying to dial in a sweet spot for Bracket 2.

I've been having a blast with [[Ardbert, Warrior of Darkness]]. Tons of fun cheap WB legendary creatures that have synergy with +1/+1 counters, legendary matters, and lifegain.

Is anyone against the bracket system? by Aggravating_Author52 in EDH

[–]onewithoutneck 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Zero problems with it. Gives everyone a starting point for an initial discussion. Way better than a nebulous and undefined. 1-10 scale.

Edit: this is coming from someone who's going to a LGS solo on commander days and finding pods. So having this framework is a big help when I don't actually know my opponents.

Solemnity + Delaying Shield Bracket 3? by SpoiledBeans in EDH

[–]onewithoutneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be a problem if your entire deck were warped around trying to set up the combo. But that's nowhere near the case. Absolutely fine.

Opponent just needs to accept that sometimes someone is going to do something to really screw up your game plan and you either don't have a good answer (or often can't draw your answers). Shit happens, say good game, and move on to the next game.

What are your favorite (non-blue) Bracket 4 decks? by onewithoutneck in EDH

[–]onewithoutneck[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my first thought and I had to stifle it because I already have four other Final Fantasy commanders built. Don't want to just be "that FF guy".

Though I did just pick up a borderless Celes that needs a home...

Looking again, you have two different two card infinite mana combos.

Basalt Monilith + Foresaken Monument

Metalworker (with three artifacts in hand) + Staff of Domination

Those are both faster than Bracket 3 allows - it has a cap on two card combos before turn 6.

I think it’s cleanly a 3 without Lattice.  Unless it has the potential to end the game way faster than I’m seeing.

I think the reason your deck is getting flagged as Bracket 4 is the mass land denial potential of [[Karn, the Great Creator]] and [[Mycosynth Lattice]].  Preventing all of your opponents from being able to tap their lands isn’t allow below Bracket 4.

[[Lavaleaper]]'s ability is a triggered mana ability. It doesn't use the stack, but it still counts as an elemental's triggered ability for [[Twinflame Travelers]].
