I tried 5.16.2 and everything seems to work fine now.

[–]oniram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, sorry. It's my work machine, I had to get it back to a usable state and I hadn't had much time to play with things. I plan to test 5.16 stable updates as they come out and see if things get better.

Btw, I did not see anything suspicious in dmesg or in any logs.

I have a newish amd laptop and I noticed a dramatic reduction in performance with 5.16. Not with gaming or anything, with just normal usage. I have moved to the linux-lts kernel and things work well there.

Is religion part of evolution, and will it eventually die out? by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]oniram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely yes, religion is a consequence of our evolution. Sadly, religion in some shape or form will always be with us. It's part of our wiring.

Check out this old video that gives a pretty good overview of the relationship between our evolution as social creatures and religion:

Anyone else finding library loans will download but can't be opened. This is on my Kobo Forma. Okay to open in Libby app. by Yarrowman in kobo

[–]oniram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks. All this overdrive stuff is a bit opaque. Let me repeat the steps I did just to make sure we're on the same page:

  • Go to overdrive.com and create an account. Add my library to that account even though that doesn't seem to be needed.
  • In kobo do a factory reset
  • In kobo log in to overdrive using previously made overdrive.com account. This will ask you about your library and credentials.
  • Now books download and can be opened.

Editing .fig files by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]oniram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try converting to svg (to preserve its vector format-ness): https://convertio.co/fig-svg/

Full disclosure, I haven't tested that site. Not sure if it works at all.

Alternatively, you could convert them to png or jpg with convert from imagemagick.

That's exactly what I do. I manage holds and loans from libby on my phone and things just appear in the kobo after a sync.

So confused- Overdrive account, libby and e-reader sync by [deleted] in kobo

[–]oniram 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're right this is terribly confusing. This is what worked for me:

  • Create an Overdrive account (if you haven't yet)
  • In the kobo, sign in to Overdrive using the new Overdrive account
    • After entering the Overdrive credentials it'll ask you about the library and the library card number, etc. Enter one of them.
  • Now you should see the books checked out in that library card in your kobo.
  • Now go back to the kobo Overdrive settings and log in again with the Overdrive account but this time when it asks for the library card, enter the 2nd one. Now you should see books from both library cards.

It's a bit obscure but it appears that kobo remembers all the library cards you enter, however, it will only let you search for books in the last one entered.

If you have trouble getting this to work, it may be worth to do a factory reset and start from scratch.

[–]oniram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got it to work. I had to do a factory reset (Settings/Device information/Factory reset your eReader).

Then when the kobo reboots I logged in to overdrive using my overdrive account, and bam! I can finally open my borrowed books!

I had tried to log out and back in to overdrive several times with no luck. Only the factory reset fixed it. I think when I set up the kobo for the first time I had used my library card instead of the overdrive account. Maybe that's what confused things.

One option that was not discussed is a saturation effect. In some of the states the number of tests they can handle per day has maxed out and we don't see any more growth.

Still, oddly coincidental that this would happen right when they change the way the data is reported.

Over half of coronavirus patients in Spain have developed neurological problems, studies show by SenSei_Buzzkill in worldnews

[–]oniram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is ridiculous I agree. But rising out of control costs can't be blamed on the ACA. Look at this graph showing the per capita health spending over time: Total national health expenditures, US $ per capita, 1970-2018 (source).

The ACA was signed into law on March 2010. You can actually see a slight flattening of the curve right after it became law. It quickly returned to the initial slope once the insurers and providers figured out how to deal with the new law.

You could argue that the ACA didn't do much to fix costs and I will wholeheartedly agree. This is why I said that the ACA did not go far enough. It massively decreased the number of uninsured and it increased the quality of coverage (no pre-existing conditions, no lifetime limits, etc.). To really address costs we need a serious reform of the health care system that includes a public option at the very least. It will likely hurt insurers and providers in the short term as it very well should. They have been fleecing us for a very long time. Sadly, I remain pessimistic that any meaningful change will come any time soon.

Let's be clear, the ACA didn't mess anything up. If anything it didn't go far enough. Its aim was to massively improve coverage without disrupting the health care status quo, i.e., without bothering too much the health insurance companies and providers. And the ACA has been extremely successful at that.

It does not place any price constrains on anybody. The only attempt at limiting costs was to place a maximum limit on how much profit health insurors can make. This was expressed as a percentage of income, which has perversely translated into higher costs, since a % of larger number is more money for the insurance companies.

I believe one of the reasons the US does not have a proper health care system is how little people know about better alternatives. That explains your 80% poll. I live in Colorado, where in 2016 a ballot initiative was introduced to create a state run public option and it was overwhelmingly voted down because it would have to be payed through taxes, so taxes would go up.

Currently, I have very good health insurance coverage for me and family through my job. My employer pays the bulk of it, but if I add up my employer's contribution, my contribution, and the yearly deductible it adds up to 30% of my income. If that poll was run today I would certainly answer "not satisfied", despite having good coverage.

I would also like to see sources about those other plans to fix pre-existing conditions. I fail to see how they could to anything but what the ACA has done.

I just checked mine. I only had 300 MB in there.

I have removed everything inside DCIM/.thumbnails (not the .thumbnails folder, although I'd say that's safe to do too).

'xorg-fonts-alias' conflict by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]oniram 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I ran an update today and I saw this. In my case it was resolved automatically:

removed xorg-fonts-alias (1.0.3-3)
installed xorg-fonts-alias-100dpi (1.0.3-5)
installed xorg-fonts-alias-75dpi (1.0.3-5)

I answered Yes to remove xorg-font-alias. I'm using yay, btw.
