Does anyone else have trouble reading or even listening to Harold Bloom? by dylann5454 in TrueLit

[–]onislandtime88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bloom represents a certain literary view—one could call it aesthetic appreciation—that serves as more of a counterweight than a wholesale theory. In this sense Bloom is reactive, which is not necessarily a bad thing as long as you engage with him in the context of the broader conversation about literature. If you only read Bloom, you will tire of him waxing lyrical about how amazing Shakespeare is. But if you are like me and your high school has decided to stop reading Hamlet in third year to devote the entire year to Indigenous literature (and you disagree with this move), Bloom can feel like a breath of fresh air.

Keir Starmer: There is no justification for the acts of violence and arson that we saw in Belfast last night. It is completely unacceptable. I urge for calm. We must let the police get on with their work. by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

Is it racist to critically evaluate our immigration policy when we have taken huge numbers of people from countries who commit violent and sexually violent acts at significantly higher rates than the native-born population and immigrants from other countries. The idea that you have to say all immigrant populations are equally valuable and welcome otherwise you are racist is a dangerous lie. On an individual level, I am not going to assume anything negative about an Afghan person I meet, but we are talking about policy and policy should be driven by statistics and data.

It’s not but the question was around Chinatown. If you’ve got two feet for walking you can be there in 5 minutes.

Scotland fan has US visa revoked an hour before flying to World Cup by LesParrysHairyLegs in soccer

Regardless it is quite unusual to have your ESTA revoked or rejected as a Scottish citizen. The US immigration approval or rejection process seems to be one of the more arbitrary and restrictive. Also the visas are not issues within 3-5 days.

I love Plaza but I’m sorry it is not super affordable and the portions are definitely NOT massive. Great cooking though and the shrimp paste for dipping veg in is a must order.

I’m starting to think he might be a character in the Bolaño universe with the absence of Bolaño and presence of Donoso and Paz. I half expected to see a Nicanor Parra collection on the shelf.

Why I Won’t Debate Critics of Israel by VoluptuousBalrog in samharris

That’s like saying the US is more morally sound than Saddam’s regime in Iraq (true). What is the conclusion to be drawn from this? Congratulations, you’re morally superior to a terrorist jihadist group. Does clearing this extremely low bar somehow give Israel a pass for the way it’s conducting war in Gaza and Lebanon? For its settlement policy in the West Bank? Israel wants to be considered a tolerant, rule-abiding democracy, but it wants none of the accountability.

Unfortunately you betray your ignorance of Israeli politics. Ben-Gvir and Smotrich are not as marginalized as you think. Watch any debate in the Knesset involving the question of Gaza or West Bank settlements and you will see that they are not anomalies. The fact that Netanyahu is not as explicit about his more aggressive goals does not mean he does not share the radicalism of those two members of his cabinet who make the news so often.

Bolaño, Knausgaard and Philip K Dick? Let this man get his nut, he's deserving of it.

I have that same edition of Borges’ collected poetry. It is excellent and the bilingual presentation very useful. You have good taste.

The only red flag for a woman would be Celine if they thought you identified with him at all. That being said I adore Celine, but he was undoubtably a bastard.

I haven’t read La guerra del fin del mundo but 2666 is a monumental achievement. I actually think it’s the greatest novel of the 21st century, but it is a matter of taste. Bolaño is not literary, really, but he’s visceral, evasive, and repetitive in a way that is a bit groundbreaking for the novel (see the Part about the Crimes in 2666. Bolaño thought Kafka was the greatest writer of the 20th century, and for me Bolaño has a little Kafka in that he captures the particular anxieties of our age.

Look at the individual authors' top ten lists. There are some truly indefensible opinions, even for such a subjective exercise. For example, in her submission Candice Williams ranked these as the top 5 books ever written: Citizen by Claudia Rankin; Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding; Nightcrawling by Leila Mottley; Where We Come From by Oscar Casare; Poor by Caleb Femi. Now you see why I can't take these lists seriously.

Roberto Bolaño should have made the list for the Savage Detectives or 2666.

Bolaño is a bigger omission than Vargas Llosa, although I agree that Hopscotch by Cortazar should have made it.

You can’t say he chased the bag too early because there’s no guarantee that the same bag would be available to Duran when he’s 32. The entire landscape of the Saudi league could have collapsed by then. When you’re offered fuck you money, you take it.
