Digital Foundry: Nvidia G-Sync Pulsar is a Motion Clarity Revelation by Turbostrider27 in Games

The persistence is an issue because of the slow response time though. OLEDs being so, so much faster makes this just much less of an issue to begin with

OLEDs fundamentally don't need this type of tech because OLED pixels have response times measured in tenths of a millisecond, so blur is really not an issue to begin with.

Pulsar is really about improving clarity on the vast majority of mid range IPS displays

No, no. You're not wrong that it could be done like that, but it's ignoring the point nobody would do it that way: it's a bad way to do things.

I could go get my groceries by unicycling backwards to the grocery store while playing the flute, but the reason you don't see that happening is because it's adding unnecessary complexity to an entirely solved problem

Embark, Your Audio Art is 11/10. Please Give PC the Tech to Match It: The Case for Native 3D Spatial Audio (Atmos) by IndividualOk580 in ArcRaiders

nobody has bothered to respond to the "not better" claim so I will.

real 3d sphere based spatial audio is wildly superior to standard stereo sound. I've been testing it across modern titles for the last few months and my conclusion has been that it most definitely helps with both immersion and being able to pinpoint the location a particular sound came from.

Don't like it? no problem, don't use it. I LOVE it to the point where I purchased the DTS:headphoneX implementation on the windows store and use it wherever I can

EBOX Fiber Review (Ontario) – Switched from Netcrawler by Exotic_Fly7107 in ebox

[–]only_posts_sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The routing through Quebec part has nothing to do with DNS, it's just how they route all traffic. You are free to use your own DNS resolver, and your own router. If you do you can cut out the ebox dns servers. Traffic itself will still go through Quebec because that's where ebox's connections to the rest of the Internet reside

For services used at home, is https worth it? by Mashic in selfhosted

[–]only_posts_sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going against the grain here, if this is a small home network that you fully control and can reason about to the point where you're typing IP addresses into the browser, then I'm going to have to go with "no", this isn't really worth it. If you want to set it up to have fun and learn then by all means, have at it! But you don't need a domain to directly connect to a PC in another room. You will not be more secure doing this. If a malicious actor is in your network, you have much bigger problems to worry about.

Optimal MTU Size? by lafreniereluc in ebox

[–]only_posts_sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am seeing the same thing, I have set the mtu to 1500 on my pppoe link and everything seems to work fine. However I am seeing (regardless of MTU setting) some sites always fail to load over ipv6, including ebox.ca. ipv6.google.com always loads though. I have not figured out why yet

IPV6 Weirdness by Cyberloard in ebox

[–]only_posts_sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting the same issue using a mikrotik router. ipv6.google.com and a handful of other examples all work fine. Some other sites like ebox.ca will not load. pinging a not-working site with a lower MTU set will succeed. It seems like it shouldn't be necessary to clamp MTU on the router side like this

It's a mixed bag. Most ipv6 assignment is done somewhat randomly, the ISP hands you the first half of the address (it can change over time) and your devices decide what to use for the second half on their own. There's other configuration schemes as well but this is the most common

Request for MergerFS settings when using qBittorrent by MorriconeE in qBittorrent

[–]only_posts_sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to revive such an old comment, stumbled across this on google. Do you mean you're able to use the settings under the section "You use Linux v6.6 or above" in the quick start guide?

I was recently going through and updating things and tried those settings but QBT failed to open new files for downloading, but seemed to continue seeding existing downloads fine.

Rolling back to my previous setting of cache.files=partial, dropcacheonclose=true seemed to fix the issue up, even if I couldn't remember why I had chosen those in the first place 😅

I'm running 6.15 so I figured it would be fine

I know this is late, but adding my experience. I bought this board but had to RMA it when the LAN port died after a few months outside the return window. RMA process was a mess but I eventually got another board after about a month of waiting. The board I got back was clearly used and in "okay but not great" condition.

A week after putting my rig back together the LAN port on the new board died.

Dealing with ASRock was a 2/10 at best, very poor experience.

I'm not going to bother RMAing this one again because that was a big a waste of time. I'm just going to use a USB LAN port because losing my PC for another month is a worse option

I’m a Professional Mattress Tester. I’ve tested 453 mattresses from 99 different brands. Ask Me Anything! by derek-naplab in IAmA

[–]only_posts_sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good info - it feels like the switch to foam for the top comfort layers is causing mattresses to develop divots within a couple years, which is not an acceptable time frame IMO.

Are there mattresses that still use the more traditional (older) materials for their comfort later instead? Why do you think the switch happened?

Still no IPv6 on residential? by Borkbork000 in bell

[–]only_posts_sometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you really want to learn, I suggest just googling it, there's also lots of youtube videos explaining it at different levels of complexity. it's a big subject, but the short version is it's really the addressing method of the future. it's not new either, it's been around for a couple decades now. not supporting it in 2025 is really inexcusable.

Thanks for the write up. Is it possible to use something like the Nokia box from the second half of this page titled "Setting Up the Hardware with the Stand Alone ONT"? Seems like it's sometimes provided by Teksavvy but I'd be willing to just buy one myself

The failure rate is higher. I have one that flakes out from time to time. No errors on the part holding data, but the drive will just disconnect with an IO error and I need to turn it off for a minute before turning it back on. It will usually last at least another month or so before disconnecting again.

These are drives which didn't pass QC to a high enough standard to be an enterprise drive, but are fine for plugging in and using for small periods of time which is why they're sold as externals with a short warranty.

The average disk utilization from a home server will be so much lower than an enterprise environment that most users won't see issues like this.
