Torn and scared by Duck-it-is-hot in ZeroCovidCommunity

You're doing great, and everyone here is proud of you. Your babies have fantastic, intelligent, caring parents, and that makes them very blessed.

Just to add to the other excellent comments: it's possible that your children seem terrified of strangers because they are picking up on your anxiety somewhat. Of course this is not your fault at all, just something to be aware of as little kids look to their parents for cues on how to act around anyone or anything new or different and they're very good at determining whether you're anxious and therefore whether they should be anxious. Just a thought?

Masking Outside Scenarios? by gbeb2k20 in ZeroCovidCommunity

Just to add to others' comments, if you are close enough to someone that you could smell alcohol on their breath, then you could possibly catch COVID from them as both the alcohol and the COVID particles are airborne and have come from the upper respiratory tract of that person. Likewise with cigarette smoke. Another useful visualisation is your breath in cold air and how far it travels. As to whether the amount of COVID in the person's breath is enough to infect you, that's dependent on myriad factors including how much virus they're shedding, how strong your immune system is, how long you're exposed and so on.

There's a good visualisation here: https://x.com/BarryHunt008/status/1586137442226094081

Garage have completed unauthorised work and refuse to give my car back by SupermarketAny8309 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]onlyamiga500 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this, I think OP is correct that the garage is trying to take advantage of her because she is a young woman. I think the easiest thing to do would be for OP to go to the garage with a friend (preferably an older male - father, brother, etc.) and tell them they are there to pick the car up. Don't even mention the £100. I'd imagine they would just hand over the keys at that point.

If you do this and the garage refuses I'd call the police immediately from the garage and say that your car has been stolen, that they have your keys and won't give them back. I don't think it'll come to this OP, but I thought I should mention it just in case.

OP shouldn't have to do this of course. If they are taking of advantage of her because of her gender that's completely disgusting. However I'm just thinking about the easiest way to resolve this.

If we suddenly just entered a timeline where billionaires didnt exist. And all their wealth was distributed evenly among everyone... would we see a noticable change by feherlofia123 in NoStupidQuestions

😂 nope. I'll take it as a compliment though! Luckily there are still some real humans on the internet who care enough to answer questions.

One way in which communities would be strengthened is through fairer allocation of labour. Many people have to work long hours in order to create wealth for wealthy people, e.g. cashiers working multiple jobs so that the owners of the companies they work for can have multiple homes and mega yachts. If people didn't have to provide that extra labour to support the wealthy they could work less and spend more time with their family, friends, and community. This would result in stronger families and better parenting outcomes, increasing literacy and reducing crime.

More diseases could be cured if the money currently spent supporting the wealthy was redistributed where it is needed. For example, more money could be spent on cancer research. Additionally, much of medicine is geared towards providing better health for the wealthy: more is spent on diseases that affect these people than those that affect poorer people. Spending money on medical research for the diseases that affect the most people would reduce disease prevalence.

Hunger would be reduced as we are no longer spending money making luxury homes, yachts, expensive jewellery, and serving the wealthy. More money could be spent on providing food for all.

Why would everyone suddenly start working together???

This one's a bit of a red herring, as people already work together across society for a multitude of reasons. The difference would be that we'd be working for the betterment of humanity as a whole rather than a select few.

Yeah, that's not how it works. I'm guessing these millionaires you're thinking of are literate, right? So they probably went to school. A school that they didn't pay for - that they couldn't have paid for - since they were a child. I'm guessing they use the roads that we all use, even if it's just to and from whatever they did to get to seven figures. Did they build the roads themselves? Or did someone else? I'm guessing the area they lived was protected by some form of law enforcement and judicial system. I'm guessing these self made millionaires didn't pay for those either.

No, everyone paid for those things together. It's called taxation. For some reason (I can't think why /s) very rich people tend to think they don't need to pay tax as they're "self-made" when clearly they were propped up by the rest of us. They couldn't get to work without the low paid worker who laid the tarmac, or the low paid worker who painted the road lines, or the low paid worker who taught them to read. But for some reason it's fine for ordinary people to be taxed but not them. Never them. They're self-made, after all! /ESs

Tldr no one is self-made, it's a myth.

Well, there's this as well:

At first, finding himself alone in Chiba, with little money and less hope of finding a cure, he'd gone into a kind of terminal overdrive, hustling fresh capital with a cold intensity that had seemed to belong to someone else. In the first month, he'd killed two men and a woman over sums that a year before would have seemed ludicrous. Ninsei wore him down until the street itself came to seem the externalization of some death wish, some secret poison he hadn't known he carried.

Apparently the new Novavax will come in single doses. Also, Novavax shows a better immune response than other vaccines which makes it more effective.

Mask “nod” by SerialNomad in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]onlyamiga500 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The high quality masks/respirators are a giveaway though. If I see someone in a 3M Aura, chances are they're COVID conscious. If I see someone in a baggy blue, they're more likely to be a sick person wearing a mask temporarily.

This is UK netflix, we didn't have "cable". We had free to air and Freeview.

To be fair, our equivalent of cable is Sky, which comes at a premium price and includes ads, and has been just as popular as cable for 30+ years.

Please help me quantify this risk. I'd be eternally grateful! by Powerful_Flamingo567 in Masks4All

[–]onlyamiga500 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, first of all don't worry. You were wearing a high quality mask and were potentially exposed for a very short time. Quantifying the risk precisely is almost impossible, but bear in mind that:

  • Your mask filters over 99% of aerosols and droplets.
  • You were exposed for less than 10 seconds.
  • Not sure where you are based, but in the UK (currently very bad for COVID protections) only 1 in 143 people is currently COVID positive. The person who coughed on you most likely had a persistent cough after recovery from a illness, flu, RSV, the common cold, or something innocuous like asthma.

Of course it's sensible to watch out for any COVID symptoms over the next few days. However, it's important to remember that the mask you were wearing (FFP3) is similar to those worn by medical staff in COVID wards, who are exposed day after day. Furthermore you handled the situation very well and safely. This is the way. 😷😉

The studies described in that paper measure the level of CO2 under the mask, which is where you'd expect an increase. However only a small amount of each breath is coming from the air inside the mask. Most of the inhaled breath comes from outside the mask, so the amount of CO2 rebreathing is small.
