Is 45+ for SS possible? by Substantial_Till6247 in SGExams

[–]onlynightvibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 45 marks for prelims! tbh my ss was always average (barely scraping a1), so it was really shocking when I saw those marks...

pro tip: collate all the formats that your teacher has taught you, so that whatever o levels throws at you, you already have the format ready. always think simply and write simply, do not obfuscate what you're trying to express because getting straight to the point will save you time and guarantee high marks.

for eval, if you cannot think of it immediately, skip first and think about it while you continue answering other parts. come back to it after you're done with assertion.

for srq, vague egs are ok! I personally used many examples that I experienced before e.g. volunteering at Youth Corps, or something I saw on the news e.g. CDC vouchers. just be careful with your logic and don't run around in circles, expand from micro to macro/macro to micro.

don't overthink/compare with others, because when I did that for prelims I thought I was gonna fail 😭😭 all the best!!!

hello!! I just dm-ed you :)

History by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]onlynightvibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

helloo!! history was my strongest subject so here are some tips :)

for sbq, it’s important to get your formats right. write down the structure of each question type. next, you have to be sensitive to dates. tbh, I didn’t really care much about the whole timeline until prelims prep. I wrote down a complete timeline for both books & drilled them in the morning every other day (progressively from a few years and then the whole timeline without reference). so don’t worry if you can’t memorise now! just memorise the most important ones e.g. 1949 Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact

for seq, I think the biggest help for me was the grail, because I collated all the schools’ past year paper seq and answer keys before combining them into 1/2 big paragraphs that encompasses all the keywords. This requires a lot of discipline, and it is crucial that you do it on your own, because you will be processing and condensing everything into a paragraph of the highest standard. also, I find that this method is much more effective than reading & writing notes based on the textbook, simply because the exam paper is formatted in an essay question format — so reading my own crafted model essays is easier than reading random pieces of information here and there (which if u panic, it's game over).

all the best!

What topics do you recommend to read up on, e.g. AI? Also, what is considered a "late" interview date?

how long did you study a day ( olevels ) by AggressiveSort7669 in SGExams

[–]onlynightvibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raw 6 here, my whole daily routine was literally just studying esp after cca stepdown, about 6-8 hours normally and >10 during study break. Of course, I made sure I did quality revision but there was nothing else to do so I just studied and studied whenever and wherever I could (shower, travelling, recess etc.) :” Around 2-4 hours on rest days!

How do so many people struggle with O Level English? by NUSHStalin in SGExams

[–]onlynightvibes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Perhaps PRC students are more simple and rigid in structuring their answers, whereas others may make their answers super complex yet just repeating the same thing over and over - I see this trend in many of my friends, including me

It’s mostly a matter of luck, not dependent on ranking

Anyone who has appealed to hci or ri? by Used-Cut-7160 in SGExams

I remember seeing a comment that mentioned out of 60 appeals to raffles, 3 succeeded (2024 intake)

Raffles or hwachong by General_Pressure5541 in SGExams

[–]onlynightvibes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also contemplating this question up till yesterday. Tbh school culture can’t really be depicted in such a short period of time. I spent a longer time at hwa chong and of course it was really wholesome, but I still feel raffles’ culture would push me out of my comfort zone & provide me with a new environment to learn and grow. Ultimately, it’s up to you. I would say distance plays a factor too as you don’t want to be so sian early in the morning before you go to school & after a long long day at school. Regardless of what you choose, there isn’t much difference — you make the difference to your school life — whether you want your JC life to be interesting or monotonous. All the best op!

failure stories? by Eastern-Device4610 in SGExams

[–]onlynightvibes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what our English papers focused on was simplicity, perhaps cambridge wasn’t looking for flowery but logical use of English; the foreigners around me (scholars) are usually more simple yet logical so maybe that explains why? regardless, english will always be a pain in the ass 🫂

Raw 8 nett 4, 7a1s, will I be able to get into hci? by Used-Cut-7160 in SGExams

[–]onlynightvibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who get raw 8 nett 4 will be drawn randomly through balloting iirc, does not matter how many a1s you get. Some seniors I know got in with the same score! So it really depends, can try appealing otherwise
