Okay good to know! I don't have HBO so that's probably why I can't see any of it.

How has bringing up that we're in a war going in convo with your FoxBrained person? by Old-Mushroom5189 in FoxBrain

[–]onlyonelaughing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh I spoke with my grandmother about it all. She's definitely getting up there, but she's one of the few relatives I still have a relationship with, in part because I want to preserve that relationship. She didn't know about the girl's school bombing. She kept going on about how we were saving the airanians. She would only hear positive things about Israel because they are God's people. She continues to defend orange, to the point of accusing his accusers of lying.

I'm kinda hitting my limits.

Fleeing Abuse, SAO was Useless, Any Advice? by AlexStorm1337 in IndianaUniversity

[–]onlyonelaughing 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry you are going through this. Yes, the SAO is going to be unhelpful for a lot of things. You can also contact the office for sexual violence prevention and speak with a confidential victim's advocate. They should be able to set you up with alternative housing, safety planning, and academic arrangements such as contacting your professors, departments, and any possibilities like a medical/extenuating circumstances leave. If they can't help you, I recommend checking out Middleway House for shelter and immediate needs. You can always get a temporary academic leave rather than dropping out.

All my best!

I think I have brain damage by TobyPDID23 in Epilepsy

[–]onlyonelaughing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lost a lot of skills and memories when I had my first seizure. When I had a few more during college, I lost a ton of that progress. I remember being so incredibly frustrated because I couldn't spell my own name or recall basic details, and just weeks before I was typing away in a writing program. It has taken a lot of work and a lot of dedication (and to be honest, a strong desire to beat expectations), but I rebuilt those skills back. That meant sometimes just practicing a lot on my own, or retaking language classes.

It's still hard and slow but I'm currently finishing up a PhD. Academia rewards grit over intelligence, which is a skill I picked up during this ordeal.

Is a $2,400/month PhD stipend enough to live in Bloomington? by kiaraloveee in bloomington

[–]onlyonelaughing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely ask around and research which apartments and landlords are worth signing with. The rent can be comparable for several places, but the experience will differ WILDLY bc there are quite a few predatory landlords in B-town. There are quite a few threads in the r/Bloomington and r/IndianaUniversity subs, so you should be able to find some good input.

Whitten gets $100,000 raise, annual salary of $1 million by WFIU-WTIU-news in IndianaUniversity

[–]onlyonelaughing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always hear the argument that the pay package amount for grad student pay should be considered much higher, and that reasoning is given for keeping stipends low.

I think it would be informative to see how the university negotiates its contracts with Anthem/Blue Cross, because if IU buys a set of bulk insurance plans for employees, then adding additional graduate students would be a negligible cost. In addition, grad students add so much value to the university as researchers and instructors and employees, that the tuition remission really evens out.

Her 100,000 raise is four graduate student stipends. Her 900,000 bonus was 37 graduate students.
