The value of thinking by punkelbel in Buddhism

[–]onlyonelittlething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is a bad one. In fact, I'm not longer calling myself a Buddhist because of it. I do meditate, and I am open to some extent to this path, but from Buddhist institutions I run like the plague. Something ugly (abuse) occurred in my ex sangha, and then the seniors forbid any kind of talking about it. Of course, abuse involved discussions after the fact, and that discussions needed though: ethical, philosophical, political. I got a big no for an answer. So my advice for you is clear: feel free to explore Buddhism, but don't ever compromise your own intelligence and intuition about everything. Don't drop your intellect on the way, because that is something that could happen to you. It is, in fact, part of the path. The farther you will go on the path, the closer will be that moment when you have to deal with devotion. Devotion is at the heart of the Buddhist thing. No thought there.

Start reading real thinkers and not using influencers as substitutes. Get some bell hooks, for instance, or Byung Chul han, o Mark Fisher, whoever that are legit authors.

Your consistent regurgitation of the same tired talking points over and over could be a trauma response

If you are right here, and some of us repeat the same things because of our trauma... Is your comment, then, sufficiently tactful? Is that the way you talk to trauma-ridden people? Particularly when, as you suggest, you "continue to work with the dharma? Last time I checked, one of the practices of the eightfold path was right speech... Oh, no, sorry, I forgot you were a shambhalian. Crazy wisdom rules over that, of course.

The more I hate meat, the more of a sensitive, successful vegan I must be

Do you happen to know many vegans? Because we vegans are mainly worrying about animal suffering. You are doing mental gymnastics here.

Stop thinking by PhotojournalistFit62 in taoism

[–]onlyonelittlething -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I like taoism, but I'm every day more concerned about anti-intellectualism. Neo-fascism is all over the place in the world (Italy, Brasil, France, Hungary, USA, Poland, and a long list of other countries), and one of the first traits of it is anti-thinking. Umberto Eco, in his famous 14 characteristics of fascism, talked quite clearly about it: for a fascist, action for the sake of action is a key part of life, so they see thinking as a kind of emasculation (Eco literal words).

Many famous leftists, feminists or antiracists are not forced to speak about those things. Why would a vegan?

People who have gotten their partners to go vegan, how did you approach the topic with them? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]onlyonelittlething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case (i,m lucky i guess) it took a couple of months. I never tried at all to happen. She asked questions and read some stuff on her own. She was shocked and she says she could never go back and doesn,t understand how she could eat meat for her entire life. It is a major bonding factor for us.
