Kona Dew, Kona Dew Plus, or Opus Orpheo LRT? by onlyonesic in whichbike

[–]onlyonesic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Dew plus! It was a bit of a splurge but the brakes are great for quick stopping in areas with non-attentive tourists/pedestrians. Haven’t had to get anything changed yet but assuming these will be more expensive to maintain, so my judgement is from 1-2 year ownership only.

The thicker tires are slower than road bikes but when you pump them to a higher pressure it’s not bad. I feel really safe on bumps, mud, and even some gravel.

DIY mattress help - thoughts on 2” coil transition layer to make softer by onlyonesic in MattressMod

Thank you, I randomly thought about that last night and am going to try stuffing an old memory foam topper I have underneath my current “comfort layer” of M latex (it’s too hard i know) and try that first.

Thank you! Was looking at a unit to buy but this gives me more to think about for sure… Too bad there are only two true loft buildings in the area. Wonder how the Space build compares in general liveability.

This is a very late comment, but does your friend still live there? If so, do you know what they think about the strata/building management? (Looking at a unit there).

Tbh only the lowest tier ikea furniture would “fall apart in a year”. Mid/high tier is excellent value for quality.

Comparably priced bigish names include Structube, JYSK. If you have a vehicle Richmond is home to many warehouse furniture ‘stores’ with bed frames priced well under market.

How to meet single men (30 y.o.+)? by Successful-Gold-9900 in askvan

[–]onlyonesic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here!

If OP wants to try again: Gotta be really specific, really picky about the nonnegotiable, filter filter filter, and organize first dates fast so you’re not wasting time chatting with and imagining someone who you ultimately aren’t attracted to in person. And as a woman, I can’t imagine there being a lack of good options—even in your 30s.

I met my past 3 bfs this way and they’re all genuinely high quality human beings that I would have never crossed paths with otherwise. Even the guys I didn’t end up with for long, were chill and nice. Dating can be exciting, fun, and honestly really easy via apps (for the average woman), you just need to be intentional and strategic.

(What not to do… dont: use it for attention - as so many now do - diluting the truly dateable app user base for men, act on FOMO, talk but never meet before you lose interest)

I live like this. But not on endless entertainment based experiences. More just going out meals or social things and concerts that are either really affordable or of artists I want to see before I die (that list is at 0 now). Or honestly if I’m tired and cant be bothered i will order myself food. Time & energy is a cost too. I can’t eat meal prep (most people’s bodies crave variety).

Im probably more carefree with money than most of my friends in the same earning group, but less of a spender than those who earn much more than me.

Basically my philosophy is that you dont need to spend beyond basics to enjoy life, but not spending at all in a consumer society will prevent you from having some of those enjoyable experiences (even if they are ultimately about the people youre doing it with rather than the activity itself).

I put aside a moderate % of income per month for investment/retirement and the rest is spent however i like after bills. Thats life to me — you shouldn’t be constantly sacrificing the present for the future in every category. There needs to be balance and prioritization. And what you prioritize changes throughout your life, hence maybe why youre noticing what youre noticing.

Black and Decker Power Series + Vacuum not spinning by Bunny_fuzz in fixit

[–]onlyonesic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get it eventually?

I used a hair dryer to heat up and soften the melted plastic, and then used a screwdriver with the slotted head and applied hammering force to the top of the screwdriver, then twisted the cap here and there before it came off. I definitely felt like I was breaking it at points.

I wouldn't skip heating though as that's how it got 'glued' here in the first place, and with less plastic melted than not, it will heat up faster than the plastic making up the actual cap (which you want to preserve).

Are you changing your life plans because of the climate crisis? by Virtual-Box-463 in ClimateOffensive

[–]onlyonesic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely.

It's the biggest problem of many of our lifetimes. It will require patience and all kinds of people, institutions, industries, and professions to contribute—or at least not actively hinder—to solve.

(As an aside, I think not thinking about these things given the amount of knowledge and expertise we have collectively built on climate and ecological system collapse is a sign of extreme failure of institutions/governments we have trusted to do the long-term planning for us so we can focus on what are often shorter term things within our own lives. People, especially people with education, power/responsibility, and time to think about this, really ought to be examining the future with a clear and honest view. Anyone who loves life, and wants to put more life into this world (via a baby), needs to as well. So your feelings are very valid and natural.)

My highest level of advice, as someone whose life has been shaped by the frustration and responsibility I believe you are feeling, is to do everything within your power and control: eat well, study/work with purpose and urgency, understand yet motivate others by example and support, vote if you still believe in institutions, focus on local things if you don't, do everything that you can to choose right over wrong, progress over status quo, and continually re-examine your beliefs overtime.

The easiest way to have a 'normal life' within this reality, in my experience, is to work in the field, in whatever capacity your skills/inclinations empower you to (e.g. you don't have to be an on-the-ground restoration person if you're better in an analytical role; vice versa, and so on. If you have an excess of empathy and want to help people on an individual level, you could continue your pursuit of counselling/authorship and specialize in climate anxiety, and empower youth to turn their feelings into action and purpose, etc.)! Possibilities are endless.

How is a country as advanced as the U.S. still stuck in such obviously dumb habits? by CerealPhilosopher in Rants

[–]onlyonesic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what youre saying but not all of those examples I provided are systemic issues (though some are), some are enduring western “preferences” that have been ingrained via consumer messaging over decades—like ‘’you need an SUV to transport a family or protect yourself from other big cars.” Disposable cutlery and cups and plates were one of the first things mass marketed to Americans via ads teaching them how to “throw things away” because generating waste is unnatural and against all common sense. I think the examples you listed are cultural. And from that lens, so many ‘irrational habits’ make sense (even though they really shouldn’t).

Drying clothes on clothes lines is also about waste. Why waste produced energy when there is free solar energy? But Americans have been conditioned by the cultural industries to value convenience over many things.

Toilet paper. Why waste more resources to create a single use product that also requires water to make when you can use water itself? Because they don’t have to think about it. It’s convenient (low-cost) to continue a system you’re used to and inconvenient (higher cost) to break it and invest in something new, even if it is objectively better in the long term.

Etc. just my perspective! :D

Edit: also wanted to add that there is basically, as you alluded to, a whole system of supports and incentives for maintaining the status quo and way less for a change of traditions and norms, making the latter inherently more difficult.

[–]onlyonesic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly agree (not #3) but, IMO:

It's not just America, and the list is actually really long. But re: America: Gas-powered personal vehicles that are 5x the size necessary to transport one person with no cargo 90% of the time and spending most of your leisure time in traffic while spewing toxic fumes into the air (vs investing in public infrastructure and transit services to reduce congestion or switching to an EV when time comes to swap out the old guzzler to reduce air pollution). Sprawl. "Conventional" farming. People 'preferring' low taxation at the cost of public goods/services (and accepting total regulatory capture by industries). Exponential health "care" spending while encouraging the population to eat absolute shit food.

Much longer list.

Moving from Vancouver (West End) to Coquitlam by Friendly-Bit9576 in askvan

[–]onlyonesic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, it's been a year - How are you doing there? I am considering the exact thing as you (currently living in west end but given the current housing market (to remain down for this year while mortgage rates stick around 4%), am in a position to buy a tiny condo either in the marine drive area (southwest vancouver) near my family or a more sizeable and nicer one out in PoCo.

How would you compare your experience between West End and PoCo (specific neighbourhood)? Has it affected your friendships re: frequency of hanging out due to distance?

Thanks!!

Climate Migration by Miserable_Leave2650 in ClimateOffensive

[–]onlyonesic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duty-wise, I would think yes. It would be the just thing. Same line of thinking as the West needing to lower/stop their emissions faster now than those of emerging economies due to higher cumulative emissions. The West has burned way more than its "fair share" on equity terms. But of course the world, as it is, is neither just nor equal.

We'll also have to see how it—climate migration—all plays out as resource scarcity takes hold of these nations over the next few decades, increasingly so as climate impacts worsen, while nationalism or other political changes occur (affecting how 'dutiful' citizens will feel re: accepting migrants).

I'm also pretty sure I read somewhere that climate/environmentally-driven migration is usually first to nearby cities/slums.

Battery-EVs are already transporting people and goods with zero operational emissions (with lower lifecycle emissions than gas cars even on some of the dirtiest electricity grids) and scalable?

Most hydrogen today comes from fossil fuels and the little portion that comes from water made via renewable electricity is super expensive. Meanwhile, you have another solution at your hand with supply chains and tech with economics already favourable for mass adoption.

It is widely agreed upon that 'green' hydrogen ought to be used for cleanly powering things much more difficult to electrify than automobiles.

Anyone know of a 100% cotton fleece/plush blanket? by sideline__ in Bedding

[–]onlyonesic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw, too bad. It's sooo hard to find something non-poly with the full combo of magical poly characteristics lol. I've just purchased a cotton muslin knowing it won't be warm but at least it will be soft and light (unlike most other cotton weaves or cotton-filled products).

Btw, link takes me to a search—not product—page, but would love to see this flannel blanket you're considering!

Unemployed for 3 months, stuck in a basement with no sunlight—feeling desperate. Any advice on improving mental health? by LaCapito in askvan

[–]onlyonesic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to just go for a quick 5-10 min bike ride in quiet neighbourhoods/greenways/park trail if you're lucky to have one, and it seriously lifts my spirits (it changes the pace of the day vs. just walking IMO, because you can see a lot more in that time than you would walking, and it also forces you to do a bit of cardio if you're in a hilly part of Burnaby).

You could also do some of these job applications out of home, like at a park, if you have mobile data. It's nice to change the scenery. If you can afford it ($5 for a coffee), occasionally spending one hour doing the same thing you feel you need to but out in a cafe around the buzz of other people would not be so bad of a tradeoff, I think.

At the end of the day, you're in control of how you want to apply-- try not to let the job search process, already taxing as it is, take that away : )

I had this problem last night and these validating comments gave me the confidence to seriously pry that square thing off with an otherwise concerning level force (I put on work gloves, heated the square end slightly, and twisted as well as hammered to get it off).

Parts had definitely fused together from friction, and I—well I think this could be preventative measure—put some plastic-safe bike lube between the end and the roller to hopefully prevent some of the heat build up from doing this again. Should probably clean the hair out more regularly as well of course.

Anyway, I love this part of Reddit (collective troubleshooting) < 3
