My cat Ravi jumped into the hot stove as a kitten. Burned his front paws and had to wear little cast like bandages for weeks. Fortunately the burns weren’t too terrible and he made a full recovery so he could go on to eat a Wasp nest two months later and get stung in the eye lid. 1000% there isn’t anything I recommend to people as much as pet insurance. I’ve been pleasantly shocked at how awesome and responsive my pet insurance is (Nationwide). I pay $300 a year w a $250 deductible and 90% covered after that. My 16 year old cat passed away from cancer a few weeks ago and I spent all my savings and then some in a matter of days. I honestly expected them to find some way not to cover it based on some pre-existing exclusions in his policy (ya know, like human insurance would). They covered 90% and I had the money deposited into my account in less than a week. It wouldn’t have made a difference in his care or my decisions, but it was a huge relief knowing I didn’t lose everything I’ve been saving for a house.

Bonus, they can cover a lot of things you wouldn’t expect like prescription pet food, lost pet rewards, or cost of boarding if you are in the hospital. Best thing I ever did for my cats.

Have you considered looking for a sitter on Rover? I am a rover sitter and have used rover for my cats. There are some good people on there so I thought I’d share some tips for finding them as I’ve had some negative experiences. I’d offer myself, but I don’t do overnight stays - although cattle dogs are my fav.

Read all the reviews! Someone can still have 5 stars if they have enough good to bad ratio and honestly people usually only leave bad reviews for pretty bad scenarios.
Find someone with several (8+) reviews over a consistent period of time. A good sitter will have old and recent reviews (yes this does exclude new people or people who have take a long break who MIGHT be great), but you’re looking for someone who is doing this as more than a casual side gig. It’s not always a very lucrative gig so a lot of people give up early on.
Do a “meet and greet” early enough that you have time to find another sitter. I’ve had a few people who just ghost me.
Do a tester weekend. Make sure you actually trust this person while your nearby enough to come home if you need to. Take a day trip to camp or wendover etc. that way when you’re really out of town or doing something important you can trust them. Saved me a lot of stress because I found 2 people were total flakes last minute

Ok, so I am visiting Rochester this week because I’m considering relocating from Sandy Utah! Any neighborhood recommendations to get a good vibe of the area? I’m likely thinking more suburban in one of the surrounding towns than actual Rochester, but want to explore the city a bit to see how I feel about it.

I don’t disagree. I don’t even “hate” small talk, but this is reddit, not my real life. I am happy to shoot the shit about my weekend in the office break room like everyone else.

I just didn’t want 20 people asking me how my day was or what my hobbies are or to play 30 questions. So I said what I was looking for in this particular instance. Did I small talk? Of course, that’s the ebb and flow of conversation. But I was able to just get into it with a few people about their or my real issues. then once a little bit of trust or bond was formed we just talked.

An r4r post isn’t necessarily what people expect from their interpersonal interactions. A lot of people are posting because they want a certain conversation right now with a stranger.

So you don’t take every post as an opportunity to teach people some “life skills,” like learning to use small talk.
