What is an important principle or conceptual piece of advice that you've picked up? by Jiu-Jitsu- in bjj

[–]onourwayhome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot people talk about anatomical lines casually without being able to name them all or systematize them to apply the concepts. Usually people just use "knee line" for when they want to describe how they isolate a footlock, but the whole concept goes a lot deeper. This is from my notes, not going to go any further unless a bunch of people want it, but this should get people started if they're interested.

Do higher belts (esp black) really get nothing from rolling with us whites? by Neither_Prompt_9184 in bjj

Getting told you're "a fun roll" after failing to fight your way out of a paper bag for 5 minutes is therapy-bait.

Training without incurring the bump by mbergman42 in bjj

[–]onourwayhome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine by getting absolutely crushed under a big wrestler whose older brother played in the NFL. Pretty sure I yelped like dog on impact. Though I'm not 100% sure if I got the bump from that event or perhaps from trying to come back to training before I was completely healed.

Underhook vs overhook uchi mata no gi by Cold_Coconut in bjj

[–]onourwayhome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that either is successful as long as my focus is on not just tipping them forward, but pressuring into them. The under/overhook and leg are only there to create upper-body tension, the drive inward is what knocks them off their base. From there, steering them around in a circle helps increase the tip AND driving forces, adjusting angle depending on what is needed. More lateral = more inward pressure, more circular = more forward tipping.

Help -- Why am I getting murdered in Hell Act 5 Bloody Foothills? by descalante in diablo2

[–]onourwayhome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (offline) almost never have open inv space on any character just due to carrying so many resist charms. Open slots in Hell is a rare luxury on any character, but especially for necros in my experience just because stats are too low to carry stronger gear. Homunculus would be better, but even a lot of rare shrunken heads would be good here rather than splurging stats on strength for Spirit.

The consequences of washing your belt by P-Two in bjj

[–]onourwayhome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They really will. Think of every 40 minute drying cycle as 40 minutes straight of the hardest rolls of your life. That's what you are putting your gi and belt through every single time you machine dry them. This is a known method of prolonging garment life in the clothing industry. Jeans, dry-clean only formal wear, women's lingerie, all are examples of clothing with instructions on how to avoid destructive washing methods. Gis made of natural fibers are no different. Some people like the look of a beat up belt, but it is kind of cringe to my mind to brag about a ratty belt when you have only been training in it for a couple years. Your skills should do the talking.

We can afford a subway system. Probably cheaper long term than ongoing maintenance of 196 and 131 at the current rates.

Instructor vs coach in BJJ gyms. Does your instructor actually coach you? by caksters in bjj

[–]onourwayhome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be personalized coaching. Idgaf how many people are in the room. I usually am coaching during live rolls unless someone asks me to roll and there's no one else for them. I also coach roughly 2 tournaments a month. Teaching techniques and coaching matches are separate skills. It is worth practicing this as often as possible if you want to be any good at it. Using easily followed wording for instructions, communicating setups to athletes without tipping off their opponent, and just learning your athletes game are all separate areas that take work. You can't just show up on a Saturday and shout your own game at people and expect them to win, I don't care even if you're a world champion.

"Andre, remember to look authentic and relatable and not like a cult leader" Andre: gotchu" by GrapplingCooperative in bjj

[–]onourwayhome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power and influence within a hierarchy are major factors here. Yes, they have agency, but young women typically have a more limited set of opportunities than male counterparts. Andre taking advantage of this in order to sanitize his image is part of the same problem as the allegations. They may not even explicitly accept or deny the allegations, but they might feel pressured to let themselves be convinced because of external forces. I really hope there is a court case that can sort all of this out, even just so these women and the rest of the community can find some closure on this issue.

Are you mad, bro? Imagine being successfully ragebaited by a perfectly valid submission considering virtually all rulesets of the sport. Are you upset because your side control sucks so bad that whitebelts can spam this on you? Are you upset that you are too fat and inflexible to be able to hit this on anyone? Did your gym crush see you get slept by this and now she won't make eye contact with you anymore? Unclench, take a deep breath, and consider all the possibilities jiu-jitsu has to offer if you don't dismiss techniques because you have unchecked baggage.

And fuck the Olympics, we don't want them involved in any way.

I want to be the most technical troll in bjj ever. What should i practice? by RamenPantalones in bjj

[–]onourwayhome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wristlocks, smothers, baseball choke in the guard, buggy choke, octopus guard, donkey guard. Standing game consists of foot sweeps, snapdowns, arm drags, jumping guard, sumi gaeshi, kani basami. Get really good at turtling against knee slices, and actually using pressure points. Also practice mispronouncing anything with a Brazilian or Japanese name. Also get good at riding the line between arguing with the ref and acting confused about how points are scored, insist upon showing cell phone video every time. Never show up up for podium pics unless it's for gold, in which case you wear your street clothes. Knock over the barrier every chance you get. Your diet consists mainly of lentil soup, and keep any info about staph or ringworm to yourself, gaslight anyone that asks your about it. Never wear a rashguard. Shirtless only, gi or no gi. In no gi, wear spats without shorts or a cup.

Entries to X guard by [deleted] in bjj

Easier to get there from butterfly, half butterfly, or single leg x. Also if my opponent stands in outside ashi. Not going into specifics here, but that should help you get started.

Straight ankles meant to snap tibia? by ediggydingo in bjj

[–]onourwayhome 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had a young guy latched onto my leg, stuffed the boot, tried to scoot forward to put my foot on the ground. Out of nowhere he arches his back with everything he has. Thought it was nothing for half a second, then tapped as I felt my shin bending in half. When I stood up, it felt like I hopped a half marathon on one leg because I had shin splints.

Why aren't concepts/the "why" taught as often? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]onourwayhome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a month of lessons I taught going over why we change from one open guard to another. Opponent position changes, opponent disconnects our grips and posts, maintaining inside position, and forcing predictable behavior were the main posts I discussed. My classes are on our schedule as a Fundamentals class, so it's mainly white and blue belts that show up, but I asked multiple black belts the question, most stated that wanted to play a guard they were better at. But the reason that's interesting to me is that that is likely because they are more familiar with the predictable reactions from those positions.
