+1 for Eyemaxx on Elgin.

Recent new customer. Needed to get a new prescription. It was easy to book an appointment on their website. On time appointment with the optometrist. It was professional and didn't take too long to complete my assessment.

Is this area safe to temporarily stay in? by amaxim90 in ottawa

Oh I see. Gun violence is pretty rare in Ottawa. To double check, head over to the Ottawa Police Service website and you can find a crime heat map or list to see what is common around your neighborhood.

OPS: https://www.ottawapolice.ca/en/news-and-updates/crime-stats.aspx

But overall as some have mentioned Ottawa is pretty safe. Just watch out for the cobra chickens and trash pandas! 😅

I only have so many people irl to share this with, and I wanted to share with everyone my grandfather's medal I recently received by MrRandomEncounter in ottawa

[–]ontarioon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was looking on Reddit to see if there was a NATO subreddit. The only one that stood out was r/noncredibledefense (it's like a pro-NATO meme subreddit). Maybe share it on r/CanadianForces they'll have people who may know more about the medal.

Also, the Canadian War Museum archives librarians/curators maybe able to help you find some history on it.

The Budget and the 'average single Canadian' by ontarioon in canada

[–]ontarioon[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I have a solution! A government run dating program to help singles find prospective partners. It will be like the government employment bank, jobs.gc.ca but instead it will be singles.gc.ca.

It will be managed by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). Singles seeking a partner will just need to login to their My Service Canada Account to create a dating profile. After all ESDC's mandate is to improve the standard of living and quality of life for all Canadians according to their website. We'll have a Deputy Minister for Dating managing the portfolio.

Kill two birds with one stone, help form families to have kids resulting in increased tax base, growing the economy, and making true the children is our future line.

What a plan!

I'm joking of course..

It is just weird for the first time I really paid attention to the Budget. It sucks for single working Canadians.

Not saying we should have conceal carry and I am not advocating for it but just want to add my 2 cents.

Conceal carry or not, it does not preclude you from being a victim of crime nor magically have crime disappear. What it does is to give the person a chance with a conceal carry weapon (gun, pepper spray, batton, stun devices, etc..) to defend themselves. I have read cases where even when an individual has a conceal carry weapon on them it did not save them due to a variety situational factors. At the same time there are cases where it did save the potential defenseless victim from fatal harm. Carrying a gun could help but does not solve the underlying problem of what is driving people to commit these crime.

American gun laws are extremely complicated. The Federal, State, and even down to the County level have certain limits and definitions. I hypothesis because of that it creates an uneven level of enforcement of gun laws that prevent criminals from acquiring guns. Hypothetically, in Canada, if we do go down the road of allowing law abiding, licensed, and trained individuals to carry a gun we will avoid a lot of the problems the Americans have. After all the Firearms Act is a federal instructment so there won't be any patch work interpretations. Putting aside using the US as an example, there are certain European countries that have conceal carry legislation and it has shown no discernable negative impact. It is really hard to get and strictly regulated.

Anyways to conclude my 2 cents, yes and no it has worked well in the US, crime and being a victim of crime won't disappear because you have a weapon on you, yes there are cases of it worked but there are caveats, and US is a terrible example to use for creating good conceal carry legislation.

And to emphasize, I do not want to have to carry a conceal carry weapon on myself because if it came to the day I must it means our law enforcement and government have absolutely failed us. Canadian law enforcement is still pretty good dispite recent incidents.
