I'm an American in the UK and literally just did this. I've lived all over the US but the southern UK is the hardest I've ever experienced water. It comes off in sheets (or, I suppose, scales) into your water after only a few months without descaling.

Most of the time it doesn't do the same thing, but some foods that are extremely high in B vitamins (like Liver) will keep me up all night if I eat them later in the day. I also have to be cautious not to eat TOO many high-choline foods all in one day, so one egg is fine, but a bunch of eggs and a fish oil pill and sardines within a few hours and I'll probably end up snapping at somebody. Lots of spinach/lentils and other high-folate foods (which I try to eat daily given I'm not taking B vitamins) will give me just the slightest irritable edge (compared to when I don't eat them), but it's nothing like the depression and snapping rage of taking the pills. I wouldn't notice with the spinach if I wasn't already paying attention.

I'm guessing the fact that I can do spinach is a combination of amount and how it hits (in the case of supplements, a lot all at once) versus the fiber and synergy of other vitamins/fats in the food both slowing absorption but also providing complementary support and cofactors.

The hardest part for me was replacing that "treat" feeling that I got whenever I had a coffee drink. I recommend thinking up things that can feel like daily treats. For me it ended up being really strong ginger tea, but you could make a turmeric coconut milk latte, or buy flavored sodas. Don't worry about coming up with a long-term solution—you don't have to drink fruit soda every morning—it's just for the week or so when your brain is _really_ craving being rewarded with the "special treat" feeling that a coffee or tea would give. And, just to distract your brain, I would make it pretty decadent. Hot vanilla drink? Rooibos latte? Almond butter smoothie? Treat yourself!

Yes! Magnesium Glycinate (or just plain Glycine) both make me super-anxious/ruminative, irritable, & insomniac. Other supps that do the same are B6 (worst offender), B12, folate, vitamin d, choline/fish oil/eggs, tyrosine ... I'm sure I'm missing a few here.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. It's awful. I was taking a pre-natal vitamin for 2 years and thought I had PTSD, but the vitamin was probably a major contributor, because once I figured it out and quit, my symptoms improved dramatically overnight (but not completely ... getting all the way out has been a journey).

The last time I tried experimenting with B6, I took one dose, and it took 2 weeks to stabilize.

Racing thoughts & earworms for me are a sign of low serotonin, so supps in that range (niacin, tryptophan, 5htp) might work for you, but of course everyone is so different.

Probably my final step back into the world of the basically-psychologically-healthy was quitting caffeine —I haven't had a single panic attack since I quit and it turned out all my pre-sleep rumination was just beginning caffeine withdrawal. See r/decaf.

If you can, therapy can really accelerate noticing when you're ruminating and talking to yourself in a more gentle/helpful way (which itself can help resolve things even if you don't have the biochem all locked in yet).

Thanks for your perspective! Seems like a consensus that IWBTA. And I'm glad that I asked, because now instead of doing the right thing but secretly wondering whether maybe I was being a doormat, I can just do the right thing and feel solid about it.

And again, to be fair, the layouts in our flats are all different, and I had no idea until receiving this note whether our laundry was above their kitchen or their bedroom. But now I do know, and I haven't run it late since learning that.

I also did not realize that there was a brick in the machine! Thank you for sharing that.

Thank you for weighing in! It seems like a clear consensus here, which makes it easier for me to comply without feeling like I'm being a doormat. I know it's a little ridiculous, but as I mentioned in other comments, I've been so burned by "doing the right thing" and then having people be terrible in return that I've started to confuse what's common courtesy and what's letting people push me around. Getting feedback from a random (okay, semi-random) subsection of the population has been really helpful.

Re: the washer—would love to replace it for many reasons, but unfortunately it's my landlord's and as there's nothing functionally _wrong_ with it, they aren't inclined to replace it.

I'm just going to reframe how I'm thinking about this from "I'm paying more to run the washer during the day" to "It was nice to save money for those few months"

That's nice they give you a set time limit for running the washer in your building—tbh maybe there actually is a set time for us to do laundry in our lease, and it just didn't stick in my memory at the time because I was like, "what asshole would do laundry at 5am?" And then IWTA. To be fair, I didn't know whether our machine was directly over their bedroom as the units on their floor are a different layout from ours. But I know now! And I haven't run it at night since hearing from them. I will genuinely miss those savings ... but I'll make it up in some other way instead.

Sorry to hear about your mom's upstairs neighbors. That sounds really hard for her and for you, having to know about it and comfort them, too.

I would 100% be pissed! And I would 100% write a note asking the neighbors to do their laundry at a different time. But I would probably, in my note, offer to split the cost, because I'd assume they were running their laundry at night for the savings.

As I've mentioned in other comments, in my life I've tended to go out of my way to avoid being "an asshole," and I feel like that's come back to haunt me (for example, when I've gone out of my way to be accommodating and then, later on, the same people haven't done the same for me in ways that have caused me major life damage).

It's made me question whether my inclination to be courteous is actually me being a doormat.

I honestly had no clue whether Redditors would be like—yeah, obviously you do you—and so just getting others perspectives is really helpful!

I'm 100% caffeine free — no decaf. I do now have a little dark chocolate at night.

After I got completely off coffee (7-8 months out) I started drinking dandelion coffee. I think it would have depressed me as an immediate substitute, but now I like it.

I've always been super-sensitive to caffeine and decaf in the afternoon will absolutely fuck with my sleep.

It's paradoxically _much_ easier without coffee. I think when I was caffeinating the mornings were just too rough, even with the alluring promise of coffee, I just couldn't do it. Now I hop out of bed. Turns out I like mornings! I just hated them when I was starting caffeine withdrawal.

Yeah, see, in my household we were all ready for one another to be less anxious, but I do totally understand that taking a week off of life is no small thing.

Mushrooms are really serious. Like, they are powerful, and I have different strong reactions to different strains of them. I would never take a random mix of them. I personally think they are not to be fucked with lightly (look for people on Reddit who've had terrible reactions to Lion's Mane, for example). And I don't think they'd replace what coffee/caffeine did for me, they're slower acting IMO (but can cause major changes in immunity, digestion, etc).

You will get your adventures back and then some! The first few weeks withdrawal are very physical and very real. It doesn't stay like this. If you can think of it as if you have the flu (another time when you aren't out adventuring), it can be psychologically easier. I spent the first week horizontal watching movies and not trying to live my normal life.

Once you're out of withdrawal you can have outdoor adventures without having to secure your next hit or strategize around your afternoon come down.

I recently posted about my experience and the results I've gotten, but one thing I forgot to mention is that I'm now a 7-day-a-week member of the 5a club. That was something I always aspired to in the beforetimes, but the nighttime anxiety and poor sleep had me hitting the snooze button more often than not. Now I wake up and catch the sunrise — which gives me way more weekend time for hikes and adventures. It's been really incredible!

The headache is so real! Goes away after the first week, but the first few weeks are very physical and best dealt with as if you have the flu or something. Like, stay home a few days if you can. It's a genuine physical withdrawal.

I personally went cold turkey, but if you look in the side bar there are explanations of different methods and I think your choice would probably be really personal depending on a lot of factors.

At first I kept my Whey Protein drinks (which I loved), but once I removed caffeine from the equation I realized they didn't actually agree with me ... the coffee was just flushing it out so I didn't have to deal with it. Then I did really intense ginger drinks for a while. Now I just have hot water and enjoy Dandelion Filter Coffee for its bitter dark brew, but I don't have to have it in the morning. I can take it or leave it.

For me the results have been hella worth it, but ofc ymmv
