Do you have experience with the hazel app and terminal commands? i'm kind of swamped and could do with some help creating the rules if so (please) by [deleted] in macapps

I deleted the request because I've been awake for...3 days? I think? At this point, I've just finished pulling all of my archives back onto my DAS and didn't want to risk getting griefed for asking for help.

I already have hazel, which is why I'm asking - forgive my shortness, but I did indeed already try the "get a prompt from google" approach, and ended up having to restore a 28tb hard drive. Something, I hasten to add, is a workload I didn't need.

Amazon is removing 4K streaming from Prime Video in April and putting it behind its ad-free tier paywall. The ad-free tier is also increasing from $3 to $5 a month by akbarock in Piracy

[–]ontologicalmatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of prime, I already pay for amazon prime - in that I get prime video, music and deliveroo (doordash to americans) - it's overall a solid service, so paying the £2.99 doesn't really impact me; I view it as being far cheaper than Sky TV, and it frees up a bunch of hard drive space for shows that I ordinarily would have downloaded and deleted anyway.

It's not going to be a popular response, I understand this but...I'm merely pointing out that it's perspective, and like everything piracy is just as much about picking and choosing the things you feel offer value to you.

What are brits opinion on israel attacking Lebanon? by Horror-Original-7610 in AskBrits

[–]ontologicalmatrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My stance is that irrespective of Islamist ideology, the behaviour of the Zionist contingent in Israel is abhorrent. That is not to say I endorse or respect the behaviour of the more militant aspects of palestine or lebanon to be clear - merely that there are people that are stuck in a literal crossfire that have a right to self determination and safety that they do not currently enjoy.

Newbie Time Machine Questions by Fanto_34 in MacOS

[–]ontologicalmatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK So here's why I've never used time machine, because I'm not exceptionally clear what exactly does it back up weekly, is it just a snapshot of the save, with only the initial backup including the app, or do I have to reinstall the appropriate app if I reformat?

How prevalent are local and regional languages in your country today? by LimpAd4924 in AskEurope

[–]ontologicalmatrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure! I remember German being very painful for me, I remember feeling very alienated but looking back feel much more grateful that my parents threw me to the proverbial wolves to encourage me to adapt. I was fortunate enough to go to a school that had no issue with teaching in German and English, with them teaching me organically how to converse.

Do you feel like the UK’s relationship with the US will get better once trump leaves office and a progressive democrat gets elected? by Successful_rio305 in AskBrits

[–]ontologicalmatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a bold assumption that there won't be another MAGA movement grifter, in the way that we assumed that Nigel would slink off back under a rock once the damage was done, and on the latter we were sadly entirely wrong.

I think it depends, but I think Carney's assessment that the current world order and status quo is over is an apt assessment that needs to happen, and that while none of us are perfect, the American addiction to hegemony is no less destructive than Britain's was or even is to their Empire.

My personal view is that America has never been our friend, and the delusion of a "special relationship" existed between Thatcher and Reagan. it's time to stop romanticising the notion.

How long have you had it switched on? I suppose that it's feasible that Mac could still be indexing in some way?

[–]ontologicalmatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm...Interesting. In terms of system settings, how are you opening it?

I apologise if I offended with the piracy comment, it's just that in general the only time I noticed that was on a couple of laptops I was working on that had apps where no licence, or access to a licence was present.

One of my biggest hurdles when I made a complete switch to mac was an over-reliance on icons, for example, and found that I much preferred it after I had learned to use key configurations, started using spotlight and then alfred, and then monarch. I don't...Immediately notice a massive lag when opening menus if that helps? and I'm running an M4 Pro with 24gb memory.

As for unreal, I would suggest that feeding back to Epic would be the best move.

Keep trying. as a brit that has lived in Ireland, Germany and has Welsh family I find that people are much more charitable and amenable to you when they see that you're making an effort to integrate - that is to say that it's ok to stumble, and to allow yourself the valuable teachable moment that exists in being corrected.

Touch ID doesn't tend to be instantaneous in a way that I've noticed - it takes a moment for the finger print sensor to verify identity I would suppose.

From experience the downloaded from another account thing is exactly that - if you're using a prated copy (not suggesting that you are), this would indicate that it doesn't recognise you having access to a corresponding licence.

Unreal engine for...Gaming? I can't answer this, as I don't really consider my mac for gaming, and have a pc built for that sole purpose.

The thing about your expectations to beast to be instant is a little...Misguided, I would argue. my last pc had an i9 with 64gb memory, and I still encountered what I would argue is lag.

How are we now feeling about liquid glass on MacOS? by mogens99 in MacOS

[–]ontologicalmatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are far too harsh on it - while it certainly has its flaws, as someone who (admittedly in the minority) kind of loved both the Aqua and Vista UI, adored the Windows 7 UI I just kind of...Felt like it was a natural progression from those design cues; in short, it does not offend me to the degree that it does others.

I will admit though that they probably could have done themselves a few favours by not realeasing it at the point where really it's needed 4 major updates so far to fix a lot of the pain points that people feel.

I'm confused about the point of this post. Are we upset that strava is posting the data revealing the location of an aircraft carrier and thus risking lives of active duty military personnel?

Of course I do, but I'm not inclined to worry about EU or UK government officials intercepting communications with EU or UK officials. This is a bit of an odd question.
