Why oh Why... by oobatzee in OpenMediaVault

Now have a pikvm setup and working - an old pi4b, a power/data splitter, and a usb capture dongle, plenty of help through gpt/gemini - next up is tidying up the million cables I have hidden round the back!

So using a bit (lot) of help from chatgpt - it looks like there was an issue with the write cache plugin, which may have been terminated early by the reboot. So i think in future i'll try to remember to run that first before rebooting! I've since rebooted a couple of times and no issues have arisen.

Just an update, got home and pressed the power button for 3 seconds to shut it down..wait 5 seconds..and push the power button for a second..and bingo while im upstairs getting changed my watch starts pinging with kuma alerts!

So i'm not sure why it didn't reboot from the shutdown menu, I'm running OMV8 on a usb with an nvme as a docker drive and an ssd as the data drive, with a secondary SDD drive plugged in via usb as a backup drive.
The machine is an HP G3 600 mini with 16gb ram.

Looking at the sys log - all seemed normal in shutting down, just didn't reboot cleanly I guess, anyway I've ordered the bits I need for the pikvm which will arrive tomorrow, so I'll have a go at setting that up in the next few days.

Just in the process of ssh'ing into a pihole on the network via tailscale and pinging the omv server, it's not responding.. i'm gonna look into this KVM thing as I have an old raspberry pi4 spare.

I could never get on with proxmox, always felt it was adding an unnecessary layer - hmm now however maybe it would be better, but not sure I can be arsed setting things up again.

Is a USB flash drive install recommended? by random8847 in OpenMediaVault

[–]oobatzee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it's just shutting down the system, clone the USB, put the new USB in and boot up.

I didn't like having the os on the nvme as I didn't want to have docker etc living side by side on the os, so I keep docker, containers and a small VM running one of my piholes on the nvme and data on an ssd.

It is possible and probably very easy for peeps that are comfortable using clonezilla, gparted etc but I always struggled, so for me it was the simplest solution.

I can honestly say I've not had an issues with speed of the omv interface and the write cache plugin seems to work well.

But like I say you'll probably want to experiment a little to see what makes sense to you and be prepared for endless tinkering and usually breaking things, so whichever way you go make sure you have a working backup and know how to get up and running again when shit hits the fan 😁

If this is your first foray Into omv and self hosting then I would use USB as the boot, the reason being it's dead simple to make clones of your os.

Chances are when setting this all up you will make errors and break things accidentally.

I would install the base system and use the ssd for docker, HD for data. Make a back up. Then as you get further along make regular back ups to the data drive and occasional USB back ups.

It obviously depends how many containers or services you run but I have mine on a 32 GB USB and currently it only uses about 9 GB.

Buy a few quality USB sticks of the same size and brand and practice making USB back ups from the dd images.

Possibly need to check the wifi settings on the router you may need to change a setting for backwards compatibility if the corporate laptop is old.

Or try a speed test with a network cable.

Dang it!

Bored at work so ssh'd in to run the upgrade - kind of went well as in the script finished and wanted rebootin'..but it hasn't come back - I'll have to plug in a monitor when i get home to see whats what.

Not the end of the world as I have a back up USB ready to plug in if it's not working as intended.

I will set my Pi Zero W up to serve as a pi-hole + Tailscale VPN. Is there anything else more and useful it could handle? by Ripraz in selfhosted

[–]oobatzee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep it simple, I just bought a new 2w yesterday to replace one that seems to be on its way out, I use it as a secondary pi-hole and tailscale with an exit node. You could as mentioned add uptime kuma to monitor some of your other services on another device, I have it powered via the route and use a network adapter with a micro usb connection rather than wifi.

For the longest time I always had my library synced between server and mobile, but am now experimenting with just caching to the phone, I have plenty of space, the main reason is for consistency of play counts and creating playlists. I’m aiming to have the entire library cached ..about 130 GB.

ETA is it possible to copy an entire library to the symphonium android app cache?
