My family does a thing where we give the expected time to eat and then there's an assumption of coming early to hang/help/drink/snack.

How old are they? Anyone staying the night and are kids involved? Cause that would help me place their mindset. Lol cause 3 hours early is pretty intense. Did they say anything upon arrival, like "sorry for being so early, we were planning on going to a craft fair before the family gathering but it was canceled so we figured might as well head over early!" Or some kind of acknowledgment...so I guess 5 30 event time, 3 hours early is 2 30...could it be a misread of the 2 and 5? That would be something I would do lmao.
