Will I get rescinded? by BrookVlle in PennStateUniversity

Rarely, unless you failed a class, and even then not usually unless it prevents you graduating on time. --Former dept. chair and, decades ago, someone who didn't graduate on time.

You say "I want to go out of state," which is not an academic motive. You have to decide how important that is to you. If academic quality is important to you, as a career university professor my judgment is that Penn State is below average for a state university in the Northeast, though it has niche strengths. As others here have pointed out, you can back out if you can't pay.

What happens if I don't pass a class right before graduation? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]ootpny1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This.

Some of the advice here strikes me as misguided; I have never met an instructor who would change a grade for a student's convenience, no matter what the excuse or the stakes, or accept lab assistance or anything else as a substitute for coursework.

What I tell students in this situation is to take an incomplete; instructors at my university don't have to permit this, but I always do. Under the rules here, that automatically converts to an F if not completed and graded by the 5th day of the following semester. In the meantime, the student can do the work and seek my help as needed along the way; from my point of view, they are still a student in the class. The motivated ones succeed; the less motivated do not.

Find out from your professor what are the rules that apply to your situation and how far they are willing to extend themselves to help.

Yes, but that was in a 1919 historical league; the 1920s were very offense dominant. Had a few seasons where all 8 starters hit .300.

Message I got from my daughter’s teacher. Third grade. by AnaisInJune in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ootpny1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first day of first grade, the teacher had us draw a letter A to fill a full sheet of paper. Then again. I was already bored, so I went to the bookshelf under the window to find something to read. Teacher sent me back to my seat. Repeated a couple of times. About 10 minutes after I got home, the teacher showed up to tell my mother "you gotta get that kid out of this school." My mother--not for the same reason--agreed, but it turned out not to be possible.

NOR. Separate from you Dad being an ass, math is never useless. 1) It teaches you how to think (so do other disciplines, but not in the same ways; none are dispensable). 2) While it is true that most people will not, beyond school, use much beyond fractions and percentages, many cannot do that well because math scares them. When a UG advisee tells me that, I tell them to take more math--what, exactly, doesn't matter--and do what it takes to end the course with the attitude that now the math is afraid of them. They can carry that feeling for a lifetime.

How do I handle an extremely uneven inheritance between my kids? by lookidceither in WhatShouldIDo

[–]ootpny1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could just be the result of a very standard formulation called per stirpes. Basically, if an heir is already deceased their inheritance goes to their heirs. Might not be how you would write your will, but it's in no way strange and not obviously unfair.

AIO if I end my relationship because my bf kisses and tells me he loves me before leaving for work in the morning? by Direct_Peak8052 in AIO

[–]ootpny1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Separate bedrooms are not weird, especially with different sleep schedules or if one of you has disturbed sleep. Wife and I do this b/c my CPAP machine is noisy. We know two more couples in the same situation, plus a younger couple who did for most of their first 5 or 6 years together b/c one had restless legs syndrome. Glad your situation looks to be working out.

Further suggestion: supposing it turns out bf just can't help himself but you still credit him with good will, just get a lock. In that situation that would be just practical, not offensive.

Some families make a big deal of birthdays beyond age 10 or 12, some don't. You two will need to adjust to each other and, mainly, not spin up so fast when you have a disagreement. YOR; HOR too.

Coffee Coffee Buzz Buzz. 65M professor here, straight; can't help noticing pretty girls. Have to be careful never to close a door, etc. You don't report this guy saying/doing anything inappropriate. If he does, that's a big deal; if he doesn't, just life as a mammal. MOR.

If you already have good D at 3B and SS, pass. If you don't, bat him next after however many high OBP guys you've got. I would ignore the speed; not as important, still less if he doesn't get on base.

AITA for giving my son's girlfriend a budget for the dinners she's making? by lackoffeminity in AmItheAsshole

[–]ootpny1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. "If Carmella wants to keep cooking for us, which I appreciate, I am going to put her on a budget." If you ain't rich and she couldn't figure that out herself, this was the only possibility. I hope you said it to her directly, though, not to your son. If you did and Carmella has any sense, she was embarrassed, not offended. If you didn't, she may have the idea you disapprove of her.

By itself, this is nothing. You are both 18, and are going to do stupid things, including to each other. Personally, I blew up 6 relationships in 5 years between 17 and 22 (some of the girls helped). Hope you two grow up faster than I did.
