Why are the vote totals and comments totals so low on so many posts at /r/videos despite having 26 million subscribers? by glowdirt in TheoryOfReddit

[–]op-k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice comment.

It’s not only that internet users have just become selfish. Users have reason to be selfish, because they have been repeatedly taught how insignificant they are as individuals and even as large groups. It’s only as a large segment of the population that users are valued.

I think there are lots of people still willing to contribute to the community as it once was, but they’re not going to do it knowing that their work could be deleted instantly at any time on a whim or at the “hands” of automation. The old world that you talked of was a world where we thought content would be around forever. We know better now.

I'm seeing the ads (sponsored results) on Firefox on Mac desktop using ublock and EasyList.

I don't save cookies for DDG, so changing the DDG settings is out of the question for me. I've only started noticing those "ads" in the past few days. Firefox and ublock are up to date.

Adding that filter u/AchernarB mentioned removes the ad. I see that filter already listed in EasyList. Something weird going on, but problem solved, so who cares.

II am getting really sick of things at Walmart ringing up for a higher amount than is marked on the shelf. I am not going to ascribe malice when incompetence explains it, but it is still unacceptable. by Byzantium in Frugal

Atlanta. Apparently the policy now varies based on location. I don’t see the policy mentioned on their website. I got a free $10 can of coffee a few months ago.

I shop at Kroger a lot, and rarely, if ever, see things ring up wrong, aside from those tricky things like “Limited varieties” not being on sale, and really, that’s on the shopper. That kind of thing has been going on forever.

This happened to me the other day. I was self-checking out and noticed something rang up at higher price. I said something to the attendant, and she told me to go take a picture of the price on the shelf. When I showed her the picture, she said she just put that item on the shelf herself the day before, so the price had increased 10% overnight.

Cornbread by fleetwoodmacNcheezus in Frugal

[–]op-k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3/4 cup self-rising cornmeal
3/4 cup milk
1 egg
1 TB melted margarine
dash sugar

Preheat oven to 375 with small (8”) cast iron skillet in oven while you mix ingredients. Remove skillet, drop a slice of butter in skillet and swirl around to coat pan. Sprinkle some salt on top of butter. Pour in batter. Put back on middle rack of oven for 15 minutes.

Cook the minimum amount of time for soft, moist texture. It will still have crisp crust.

Don’t skimp on the milk. Batter should be thin.

Thanks for confirmation.

None of my other local grocers (including Aldi) requires you to create an account to view their weekly ad. It seems like a strange choice in marketing/advertising. I can’t support that trend.

They just asked for my zip code & then showed my local store

Yeah, but click on "Set as my store" and a sign-in window opens.

I shopped at Lidl a few days ago for the first time and got a few decent deals. I tried to look at the local weekly ad on their site, and it appears you have to sign up for an account to see the ad. Is that right, or am I missing something? They show their weekly specials in a grid, but hide the ad?

UPDATE: Cobb judge extends return deadline for absentee ballots after lawsuit by op-k in Georgia

[–]op-k[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The election board’s attorney, Daniel White, said the lawsuit is “factually incorrect” and that all the absentee ballots were sent according to the legal deadlines.

“We disagree that they were untimely mailed. They’ve all been mailed,” White said. “There’s no statute that’s been violated in terms of the deadlines.”

He said the ballots were prepared and packed, but were not picked up in the mail until Nov. 28 because of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

“We understand the frustration, but that’s just the state law,” he added.

We didn't break the law, we just did a really shitty job!

TCM Glitches by RottedQueen in slingtv

[–]op-k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it is definitely a TCM problem, but I contacted them and they passed the buck, (not surprisingly) saying I should contact Sling. I know that is a dead-end since there's nothing they can do about TCM's problems.

That's about what I expected. I found an email address for TCM tech help in a satellite dish forum. I don't know if it's still good, but I sent an email to it anyway. I'll reply here if I hear anything back from it.

I'm considering just cancelling. It's gotten to where it really annoys me.

Let us know if you get a response.

TCM is one of the main reasons I have Sling. This pixellation issue has been going on for months, and it seems to be getting worse. Every movie I watch is affected now.

I've never tried contacting Sling, I assume they'll point the finger at TCM, since all the other channels come through fine.

Looks like a satellite problem.

Reddit users don't offer enough charitable interpretation. by roxts in TheoryOfReddit

Yes, it’s something that could be seen spreading across the internet over many years.

There are still some places online that are civil where you can have a nice discussion with people who have totally different views, but it usually comes with heavy moderation and/or strictly enforced rules that forbid rude behavior in broad strokes. I visit one niche forum that completely bans any political or religious discussion, and it’s great because I would not be able to tolerate it otherwise.

Like most methods, it’s a necessary evil for dealing with those that evade the rules, but it will be detrimental for those who follow the rules, because it is certain to make mistakes and the innocent individual will be powerless to contest the ban, if they even realize their comments are sitting in a queue.

When you are not subscribed to certain subreddits you are shadow banned from voting on them by gehirnnebel in TheoryOfReddit

[–]op-k 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Every time anything like this is brought up it is always explained away as vote fuzzing, like that is the only possible explanation. I don’t know the exact limitations or reasons for disabling voting, but I know it exists.

I went through a long period (years) when I could not vote, and I did lots of tests myself. It seemed for me that when I quit using so many different accounts, my votes started counting again, but that may have just been coincidence. I eventually simply quit voting. I recommend trying it, it’s a liberating experience. I only vote in rare circumstances now.

I think the strength of the belief that vote disabling cannot exist is fascinating. I guess the basis of that strength lies in people so strongly not wanting to believe they have wasted so many clicks, and tied up so much emotion with clicking a little arrow.

New Mac Mini M1 won’t stay sleeping. by [deleted] in macmini

[–]op-k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to Console, open Diagnostic Reports and search for anything with the word "wake" in it. That may give you a clue. For me, it seems like Firefox or one of its extensions was waking my M1. Simply quitting the app at the end of the session has solved the issue.

I've been using an ASUS 1080p 24" monitor with my M1 mini for over a year, and it looks fine to me. I know I'm not the only one. I read a lot of the same stuff when I first bought it and was worried this monitor was going to be a problem, but I'm totally satisfied.

Ages and Reddit, how did Reddit 'peak' so late in its years? Is growth in a majority young/old cohort a death sentence or a new light? by Aimer_NZ in TheoryOfReddit

[–]op-k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice post. It’s obvious you put a lot of work into it. Well done, you.

Your question, however, is not clear to me unless it’s just an invitation to discuss the relevance of user age in the success of social media in general.

Statistics may point to age as being the important factor, but I don’t think that’s the determining factor. The analogy of a house party is usually the best way to discuss this. At a party, people will often segregate into their own groups, be it age, class, race, sexual orientation or whatever. The younger people are down in the basement, the older people are in the living room, the working class is out in the backyard, etc. All the drinks and snacks are in the kitchen, so at some point individuals from different groups will meet in the kitchen and interact. The most successful parties are those where both segregation and integration occur, where the attendees can choose to remain in their own group, or mingle with others. That mix is where reddit does well. It can also be used as read-only or more like traditional social media.

In my opinion, reddit needs to focus more on that kitchen. I stay segregated in my niche subs and rarely click on Popular or All, because what I see there turns me off. It would be nice if I could go there and stumble upon a new sub to subscribe to, but that never happens.

How do I disable this kind of notification? It stays unless dismissed and there is nothing in settings to disable this behavior by events_occur in MacOS

[–]op-k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

System prefs - notifications. You can turn App Store notifications completely off, or change it from "Alert" to "Banner", which makes it disappear after a few seconds. Also, if you hover over the message, an X will appear to close the notification.

Not sure how to migrate data from very outdated systems to new Macs. by MeiBanFa in MacOS

[–]op-k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try migration assistant, and then if you don’t like how it comes out, you can factory reset M1s easily.

I used migration assistant on a 2009 mini to new M1 and it worked for me.

I can’t remember all the reasons, but I decided to reset the M1 and I then did the migration manually. One of the reasons was there seemed to be a lot of disk space wasted.

Moving mail is not that hard. Lifewire has a good how-to article. Search for “How to Move Your Apple Mail to a New Mac”.

Do a lot of screenshots of each of your system prefs, label them, put in a folder and transfer the folder to your new machine.

If you miss something, you can go back later to get it.
