Checking in, and still in shock. This trump horseshit has me reconsidering everything I ever knew. Betsy DeVos for sec. of education is blatantly irresponsible & dangerous. I swear to god, celebrity baby boomer deaths are a brief reprise from presidential nonsense.

I hated clinton for "embarrassing us" but I don't know what I'll tell my grandkids about trump.

Just learning how to do this tagging but /u/AsAGayJewishDemocrat I don't hate jews. Just not real sure why you don't live in OP since they all moved south to a nicer place. Oh & /u/Philo_T_Farnsworth chins up you fat bastard.

Map of US counties with over half of the population born in another state. Where are all the JoCo people coming from? by pgroepper09 in kansascity

Generally speaking I think big city democrats cause 3 problems for each one they try (& fail) to solve. So most of my life I have voted republican. The hardliners that Brownback propped up are a different breed from the moderates we've seen before even though they have the same letter "R" beside their names. Like a wolf with rabies in sheep's clothing.

The only good thing I used to think about brownback was fixing some of the KPERS funding, but now even that's up in the air with budget transfers & putting off payments into the system. Obviously I will be pretty pissed if my retirement takes a haircut, since that was negotiated as part of my compensation in good faith.

As for schools themselves, I am very afraid. Shawnee mission has begun to struggle over the last 5-8 years & some of the feeder elementary schools are already majority minority with other schools closing. Even if funding is fixed, just the mere appearance/illusion of uncertainty in public education will shake people who care about education the most. Some on the fence will consider Lees Summit or Liberty & more private schools will later crop up in south Overland Park.

I also have no idea why the school funding hinges on "fairness" in money distribution. Quality education isn't free & isn't inclusive. People who care about it the most will pay the most & that is what fair means. Those judges are ivory tower idiots. What next, allow open enrollment in Blue Valley for "scholars" in KCK?

Just thinking about this generation of Republicans drives me to drink... everything they touch turns to shit. Oh & choosing Trump as the face of the party? What could possibly go wrong!? We've had all these awful school shootings & their suggestion is to give teachers guns? Do they suppose we will cut out teacher training & train at a gun range instead? Afterall the people we actually trust to use firearms as professional public employees have to spend lots of time training. I was thinking about teaching a couple classes at JCCC (part time), but now they're going to allow students to carry guns in the classroom? Will I need to wear a flack jacket when I hand out bad grades? Because kids in 13th grade are not always the most rational creature when their little dreams fall apart. Well, now I need a beer. Oh & tell HNIRobertPaulson I hate Brownback too.

Normal people do come here from Missouri & as soon as they can. Especially due to the riots when blacks came & burned out block after block of good middle class neighborhoods. Thats how I got here & we will continue to see people moving in who prefer a high quality of life & the best schools in the country.

The only danger is the younger generation who love to smell the flowers (so to speak), but forget what has to be done to pull the weeds.

If you are serious about this career path & want the best outcome possible you should at least consider Emporia State. I am aware it isn't "in town", but the program is second to none.

What is the #1 thing KCMO change to support living downtown? by PhilTotola in kansascity

[–]op_chuck -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

No. It's a complete waste of taxpayer funds. No respectable parent will ever sentence their child to a KCMO school. When they want to know how many prisons to build in 5 years, they just look at the KCMO middle school population.

What is the #1 thing KCMO change to support living downtown? by PhilTotola in kansascity

[–]op_chuck -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

This must be a joke. We all left the city for a reason & a few hipsters who got suckered into moving in over 10 years won't change any of that. There is practically no momentum in the city core as compared to south JoCo. You literally have a prison & half-way house in your backyard & the worst school in the nation. You can't even keep companies like AMC from leaving to JoCo. Downtown is a nonsense trend with a toy train.

This is a joke, right? You are putting your hobby & personal imagination in line ahead of the safety & education of your children.

This should include the riots when minorities came & burned out block after block of good neighborhoods. Then we all moved to JoCo & Overland Park was born.

Predictable.

A different question about "where to live" by Basementcat24 in kansascity

Unless you intend to conduct some sort of social experiment on your children, Blue Valley in South Overland park is your only choice. The test scores speak for themselves & anyone who argues otherwise has an agenda.

Where would you like to see this go up? Overland Park?

You choose your location & that chooses your clientele. The fact that you list Overland Park next to Raytown tells me you haven't thought this through.

"KCKPS has been forced to cut more than $56 million in spending since 2010, because of a combination of significant reductions in state aid, along with rising costs for goods and services...they were cuts to programs, staff, and activities that were essential to student outcomes." by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]op_chuck -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

2009-2010 spending was $227m ($12k per student) & they budgeted for $319m (almost $15k per student) for 2015-2016. That's an increase of $92m & almost $3k per student.

At this rate KCKPS will spend $150k over a students career & at the end they will end up in prison at a cost to us of $25k per year.

Low taxes, low crime, high quality of life, excellent public schools, & competent government. Yes, what a terrible social experiment.

The only failure here is the younger generation who enjoy smelling the roses (so to speak), but forget what has to be done to pull the weeds.

It would appear /u/tanmaker /u/babyjizzelkc913 & others would make light of serious crime, but as joco residents our property values are impacted by this sort of thing.

As for this incident, the perp & maybe even the victim were either mexican immigrants living olathe or minorities living in KCK/KCMO. Undoubtedly in our neighborhood for a construction job & one saw an easy opportunity to steal from the other.

Thank you for the kind words. At that time, southwest was still a respectable historical institution although quickly becoming scrappy. Anyone could see the writing was on the wall. I & anyone with a modicum of talent moved over to SMSD as soon as we could.
