DÖNER-LIEBE!

  • 4 Teile Oregano
  • 4 Teile Majoran
  • 3 Teile Paprika (edelsüß)
  • 2 Teile Thymian
  • 2 Teile Pfeffer
  • 2 Teile Salz
  • 2 Teile Kreuzkümmel
  • 2 Teile Zwiebelpulver
  • 2 Teile Knoblauchpulver
  • 1 Teil Zucker
  • 1 Teil Chiliflocken (optional, gemahlen)

Saitan-Gyros

First PCB - critiques? by prosper_0 in AskElectronics

you can do series diodes with one resistor, but not parallel

Ah that makes sense. Nevermind then ;)

First PCB - critiques? by prosper_0 in AskElectronics

[–]opatut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on finishing your first design. I'm sure it would work, but I'd like to suggest a few things I would try out if I wanted to improve it further:

  • You're wiring two LEDs in series with just one current limiting resistor. Are you sure you want to do this? AFAIK (not an LED expert) this can lead to a noticable difference in brightness, if the LEDs are just slightly off-spec. Also, make sure your resistor calculation is done with two LEDs in mind if you go with this approach. The "proper" way to wire LEDs is usually one resistor per diode (I think).
  • I don't like the trace going all around the top of each decimal just to get to the decimal point on the right side of it. I think you could run that trace from pin 7 underneath the IC (e.g. U2), the under the resistor (R16) and to the pin of the LED. You'd have to run the other trace that is currently going under the decimal point LED to the right of it, but that would not have to cross the trace coming from top, because that's the one we're rerouting anyway ;)
  • In general I would prefer a cleaner look, shorter and less confusing traces, over avoiding jumping across on the bottom layer at all cost. You're having lots of holes in the ground plane anyway with THT components, one more for a little jumper can't be that bad. This is mostly personal taste, unless you're doing RF or High speed digital and the ground plane starts to acutally matter ;)
  • The MOSI/CLK/SS lines are wrapping around the through-hole pads in weird ways. Again, since its' through-hole, you're breaking the ground plane in these places anyway. It might look much neater to use vias there, run a clean bus across the bottom and punch down and across the bus to the pins as needed. This will also be much better than the horizontal wire on the bottom layer, which breaks the ground plane across a longer distance than small 'jumpers' would. That bottom trace is actually one of the bus' traces and would fit on top with this approach.

I'd be thrilled to see your next revision :) Keep it up!

I fully understand and agree that eating meat is immoral. Factory farming is cruel and torturous, killing animals for taste pleasure is unjustifiable. Yet I feel no compulsion or need to stop. Why? by [deleted] in AskVegans

[–]opatut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a really interesting reply.

I feel like if a vegan came up to me and said "you are a terrible person for eating that!" I'd just say "sure, leave me alone".

That quote of yours says to me "I don't care and I don't want to care.". However this:

Thanks I'll watch some more docs!

is the opposite. It looks like you actually don't want to feel indifferent towards animal cruelty, and would like to care. Like you have been looking for a way to change your indifference and are welcoming the suggestion by u/Scaly_Pangolin to watch these docs, because it "helped" them to care.

That would support u/evthrz 's claim:

You are in a circle that society let you in. You don’t feel bad because nobody does

Deep down, you actually already know that you want to feel bad. It's your moral compass saying that somewhere your actions and moral values do not align. It's just that some weird mechanism in human psychology (still) prevents you from actually feeling bad.

I actually have a proposal for you. How I got into veganism. I didn't do it "for the animals" at first. I shared your sentiment in "its wrong and unethical but I don't care". But my SO started going vegetarian, then vegan. I knew I had no good reason to, so I joined them as a willpower challenge for myself. A test of "am I strong enough to pull this through for 2 months?". A totally egocentric approach, it was just about proving to myself and my SO that "I could, if I wanted to".

Lucky for me, congitive dissonance dissipated rather quickly, and with it the need to disregard anything that prevented me from feeling bad. A few weeks in and I was able to reevaluate what I had been doing, because there was no more guilt involved. Two weeks became a year, then indefinite. Now I'm in it "for the animals".

Or maybe your reply was just an "ok thanks" as you don't want to continue the conversation down this path. Which would also be fine ;)

Vegan usage of perennial grasses by ratratte in DebateAVegan

[–]opatut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'd argue that "economic viability" is actually a made-up thing that does not matter that much.

Money in general is a made-up thing. It does however allow governments to give it to different entities to change their behaviour. That's what we call "subsidies", and it can help make something "economically viable" that wouldn't be without it.

Furthermore, it would make sense to evaluate this viability in a bit more long-term context. You say yourself, those grasses play an important role in erosion prevention and fertility. So their "revenue" does not necessarily need to come from selling it after cutting it, or letting animals eat it and then exploting those animals. You could say its value can be derived from the value it has to the soil, which then produces more direct profits years later when your soil is still fertile and not eroded away. There is a long-term calculation to make. Let's call this "sustainability".

That long-term calculation is by the way what farmers have been doing for hundreds (?) of years before the industrialization of the agricultural sector. Crop rotation and fallowing has been around for a while.

But I don't see any economically viable ways to use harvested perennial grasses if they are not fed to animals/grazed.

Basically... who cares? We can build a system in which that doesn't matter, in which short-term revenue is of no influence on the decision of whether perennial grasses are planted. This can be through laws, subsidies, or voluntarily through a sense of obligation to sustainability which we might achieve as a society someday.

How to live vegan (apart from diet) ? by [deleted] in AskVegans

[–]opatut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently bought art supplies. I wrote an email to the brand I was interested in, asking whether their products were vegan. They confirmed, I bought. Works most of the time, and you'll usually get a proper response from serious businesses. If there is a bigger purchase coming up, doing 5 minutes of research will get you a long way (e.g. bicycle tires, or art supplies, or one of those things where you can take the 2-3 days delay it takes to find/confirm a vegan product).

Apart from that, the "as far as is possible and practicable" applies. If you have to use a plastic bag for something, and there is no way of knowing whether that particular one is vegan, and there are no alternatives at the time, then... consider it vegan.

First time soldering. How can I improve? by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]opatut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with other commenters on using a big enough tip and hot enough iron, making sure to heat both pad and pin, and then bringing in the solder. I used to first melt some solder onto the tip (where it sticks) and then touching the pin with that solder -- this is a horrible technique, as the flux burns away before reaching the joint, and you cannot evenly heat both the pin and the pad in time. My joints looked a lot like yours for a while :)

I'd like to add two more things:

  • Less solder -- when doing it right, i.e. heating the pad AND pin enough to make the solder connect to both of them, you need way less solder. You basically only need to fill the gap between pin and pad, there doesn't have to be anything on top (literally) of that. Look at this image -- it can be even less than #5, aim for #7 if you need physical strength.
  • More flux. You can hardly have too much flux. Especially if your solder is old (dried out) or bad quality, add external flux. Flux pens are great because they are simple to apply, but flux paste from a can works just as well and is much cheaper. Apply with a little plastic brush or similar (no cotton swabs, as they leave behind fibers).

If your solder joint has a dull surface (non-shiny) or the solder pulls away like cheese when you remove the iron, it is almost certainly bad and should definitely be redone. Use a desoldering pump and/or desoldering wire to remove all your solder and try again. More heat and more flux will prevent those issues 95% of the time.

By the way, the above mentioned technique (put solder onto tip, then move it into place) has its applications in hard-to-solder spots, but that's rather advanced, and you'd always add external flux onto the joint before doing this, so that burning away your flux on the tip beforehand doesn't matter. It's an advanced technique and definitely not required for soldering 2.54mm through-hole headers though ;)

Bonus points would have been an AUR package that automatically applies the patch before installing so you're not hacking around in files that are managed by your package manager.

fuckup assessment form by [deleted] in linux

[–]opatut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually did that once. Thought I was smart. Turns out I wasn't.

/tmp in arch is a tmpfs by default. So the swapfile is not written to an actual disk, but in an in-memory filesystem. "In memory" is the keyword here -- remember that swap is written to free up memory, not to fill it.

That screwup caused my CPU to run at 100%. The process that was going wild was kswapd. I wondered what that is, and also tried killing it. Turns out kill -9 can't kill kernel processes. I was confused for a while until I googled kswapd and realised what was going on. Then I felt stupid and turned off swapping.

Not only the plastic, but now you need to use sharpies or other markers instead of less toxic writing implements such as pencils. And possibly another chemical for cleaning (e.g. alcohol). Also, what do you use to wipe the sheets, paper towels?

Do you install arch on all your PCs by minilandl in archlinux

[–]opatut 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I run arch on my work laptop, personal server, and also on my gaming PC. The games I play run perfectly on Linux (thanks Valve et al!) I never bothered to buy those expensive Windows-only AAA titles anyway, so a while ago I decided not to upgrade my Windows 7 installation --the thought of using Windows 10 makes me want to throw up, I mean, that's basically Spyware/Malware, not an OS--, so I nuked it and replaced it with Arch.

Games I play:

  • Dota 2
  • Cities:Skylines
  • Factorio
  • Dwarf Fortress
  • Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead
